This record was formerly classed as 'ecclesiastical remains'. Kilgobbin (Cill Ghobáin) parish church ruins stands on a high ridge running E-W, situated on the N slope of Three Rock Mountain on the S side of Kilgobbin Lane, near Stepaside Village. Kilgobbin Castle (DU025-017001-) stands 485m to the NNE. The 12th-century high cross (DU025-016011-) and bullaun stone (DU025-016012-) stands 35m to the NW. The church and graveyard lies in the present parish of Kilgobbin, in the barony of Rathdown and probably stands on the site of the early Christian monastery (DU025-016----) founded in the 7th-century by St. Gobán. According to Ó Riain (2011, 367); 'This name derives from Gob(ba), a hypocoristic or pet form based on gabha/ gobha, 'smith', with masculine suffix -án (Gobán) and feminine suffix - nait/-naid (Gobnaid). A number of saints names, including not only Gobán (Gobbán) and Gobnaid, but also Moghobóg, reflect this hypocorism, as does the name of the legendary Craftsman, the Gobán Saor. In a non-hypocoristic form, the name was borne by Goibhne, smith of the Tuatha Dé Danann, an Irish of the Celtic smith-god, known in Wales as Govannon. A week later (1 April), a saint of the name Gobán was given pride of place in the Martyrology of Tallaght, which may have led to John O'Hanlon giving the church of Kilgobbin in the Dublin barony of Rathdown, not far from Tallaght, more prominence than any other in his entry for this day'. Excavations by Teresa Bolger in 2004 under licence No. 04E1373 to the west and south of Kilgobbin church and graveyard in advance of a housing development identified a complex sequence of enclosures with associated corn drying kilns and field ditches, mostly dating from between AD 650 and 950. The results of her excavation were summarised by the excavator as follows; 'Excavation was carried out in six areas that had been identified by a programme of monitoring undertaken by Ellinor Larsson (No. 644 above, 04E0777). The majority of the areas investigated during this phase of work appear to relate to the church site and to date to the 5th-12th centuries AD. Area D1 Area D1 was located directly south-east of the church site within the area zoned for green space. Topsoil has been stripped over an area measuring up to 50m by 25m revealing a complex and dense concentration of archaeological features and deposits, the most significant of which were a pair of curvilinear ditches, indicating the remains of successive circular or subcircular enclosures. An area measuring c. 50m by 6m was excavated through Area D1 to create a corridor for the main services conduits. The remainder of the area was sealed with terram and backfilled for the purpose of preservation in situ. Investigation within the services corridor indicated occupation over multiple phases with evidence for a sequence of enclosures oriented on at least three distinct alignments. There was also evidence for activity pre-dating the earliest enclosure ditch and post-dating the latest. Four main phases of activity have been identified, which would appear to be of early medieval date and to relate directly to the ecclesiastical site. Phase I The earliest occupation evidence identified appeared to pre-date all the enclosing ditches identified at the site. It was mainly characterised by a circular slot-trench and pit. No finds were recovered from the deposits associated with this phase. Phase II The second phase of activity was defined by a north-south-orientated ditch (C3) traversing the southern and central parts and a concentration of post-holes in the northern part of Area D1. It is not entirely clear whether this ditch represents the remains of a field boundary or if it defined an enclosure. It extended north-south from the southern limit of excavation for c. 18m before terminating. It tended to curve very slightly to the east. No direct relationship could be established between it and the scatter of post-holes further north. A number of ferrous objects including a couple of possible pins were recovered from deposits associated with this phase of activity, as well as a small fragment of a clay mould. Phase III Phase III provided the first evidence for a formal circular or subcircular enclosure, represented by the curving ditch C14/C155. It defined an area c. 37m in diameter. The curvature of this ditch indicates that the present church and graveyard would not have been encompassed by it. It should be noted that the size of the enclosure would be within the middle range for ringfort sites. The only other associated activity within this enclosure was limited to a scatter of post-holes in the centre and south of Area D1. Finds associated with Phase III include a ferrous knife and pin. Phase IVa-c Phase IV represents the main phase of occupation recorded at the site. Three sub-levels were identified within this phase. This phase began with the development of a large curvilinear ditch (C21) running across the central part of Area D1. Again, this ditch is likely to have defined a circular or subcircular enclosure. The curvature of this cut suggests that it would have encompassed all or at least a significant portion of the present church and graveyard. It is likely that it was associated with an ecclesiastical foundation. No other features can be clearly associated with this phase of activity, but it is likely that such features survive in those areas of the site which remain uninvestigated. Phase IVb was characterised by the apparent deliberate backfilling of this ditch, probably by levelling out an associated bank. Phase IVc was characterised by the latest in the sequence of ditches (C8). The original site survey carried out by Arch-Tech Ltd suggests that C8 intersected the Phase IVa ditch, C21, but did not cross it. Unfortunately this section of the site lay outside of the extent of this excavation. It is likely that C8 represents an alteration of or adjustment to the enclosure defined by C21. It would appear that for some the reason the area enclosed by C21 in Area D1 was not large enough and this necessitated the backfilling of C21 and its bank and excavation of an annexe ditch (C8) to the south. Certainly C8 does appear to define the southern extent of a spread of deposits and features which produced very strong evidence for metalworking and related industrial processes. The uppermost material sealing C21 (ditch) produced extensive evidence for metalworking in the form of slags and crucible fragments. A series of pits (C31, C30 and C70) also produced evidence for metalworking. A rich array of finds was recovered from the deposits associated with Phase IV. This included a selection of ferrous and copper-alloy pins, a fragment of a polychrome bead, a lignite bracelet, a selection of crucible sherds and a highly ornate copper-alloy clasp. Phase V The latest phase of activity identified at Area D1 was characterised by evidence for later agricultural practices, mainly the presence of shallow plough furrows. Area D2 and D3 Area D2 measured a maximum of 15m east-west by a maximum of 15m and Area D3 measured a maximum of 25m north-south by a maximum of 18m. They were located adjacent to each other in the north-west of the site, just south of Kilgobbin Lane. The two areas were separated by a buried live electrical cable and were only 2m apart at their closest point. Three phases of activity could be identified; both areas were characterised by ditches of possible early medieval date. Phase I was mainly characterised by a pair of ditches, Phase II by a single burnt feature and Phase III by quarrying and cultivation. Features associated with this area extend north and east into the area zoned for green space. It seems likely that the two ditches which characterise Phase I are related. They appear to define a large subrectangular/subcircular enclosure that extended beyond the limit of excavation to the east and north. A possible rubbish pit and the presence of large amounts of animal bon - DU025-016001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU025-016001-. Kilgobbin (Cill Ghobáin) parish church ruins stands on a high ridge running E-W, situated on the N slope of Three Rock Mountain on the S side of Kilgobbin Lane, near Stepaside Village. On the 1837 ed. OSi 6-inch map, extensive quarrying of the ridge on which the church stands is visible as a 'Gravel Pit' immediately to the NE, E and SE, with 'Sand Pit' indicated in two areas to the S of the church and graveyard. Gobán. According to Ball (1905, 71); 'The church of Kilgobbin is said to owe its foundation to St. Gobban, whose festival falls on April 1st, and whose name appears in "The Martyrology of Tallaght," as well as in "The Martyrology of Donegal".' The medieval church of Kilgobbin formed part of the estate or prebendary of the Archdeacon of Dublin and belonged to the mother church of Taney [Tawney or Tacheny DU022-016002-] which was the head of a rural deanery containing Kilgobbin chapel and several others (Mason 1820, 44). Between 1250-1303, the valuation of the church of 'Kilgoban', taken from the notes in the register of the archbishop of Dublin, was listed as 12 marks 11 shillings and 6 pence (Mason 1820, lxiv, Table 1). Between 1212-28, 'Kilgoban' is mentioned in the 'Crede mihi' which was the ancient register book of the archbishops of Dublin before the Reformation (Gilbert 1897, 136). The Chapel of Kilgobbin or the 'Capella de Kilgoban' is listed in 1533 in the Reportorium Viride of John Alen, Archbishop of Dublin, where it is listed as one of the chapels in the medieval Deanery of Taney (White 1941, 186). In 1546/7 an Inquisition, into the extent and value of the possessions of the Archdeacon of Dublin, described 'Kilgoban demesne' and its tithes as; 'The demesne lands appertaining to this Rectory, are ii acres of arable land, worth xvid. per annum. The tithes extend over the town-lands of Kilgoban and Jamystown, and are worth, iil. per annum with alterages and oblations, (over and above the Curate's stipend and repair of the Chancel)' (Mason 1820, 46). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Dublin recorded that in 1640 Sir Adam Loftus of Rathfarnham was in the possession of the lands of Jamestown and Kilgobbin on which there stood 'one Castle thatcht, & a garden plott, & the Walles of a parish Church. The said Buildings are Valued by the Jury at Twenty poundes. The Tithes belong to ye Colledge of Dublin' (Simington 1945, 274). Ball (1905, 71) recorded that; 'When Archbishop King was promoted to the See of Dublin in 1703 he found the parishes of Taney and Cruagh, as well as that of Kilgobbin, unprovided with churches, and at once set about the erection of & church at Kilgobbin, which he intended to serve for the three parishes. The church was completed before 1707, and was served until 1720 by that over-worked man the Rev. Walter Thomas, the curate of Donnybrook. Then it was made a separate charge. For more than thirty years it was served by the Rev. Thomas Gascoyne, and after Gascoyne's death in 1763 the Rev. Mervyn Archdall, the renowned antiquary, was appointed to the cure. Under the Established Church Kilgobbin Church continued to be used until the erection of the present church at Kiltiernan in 1826'. Present remains consists of the ruins of a single cell rectangular church with entrance porch located at the W end of the N wall, and bellcote on the apex of the W gable standing in the W quadrant of Kilgobbin graveyard (DU025-016002-). According to Ball (1902, 69) the present structure was built between 1703-7 to serve the parishes of Taney and Cruagh (Turner 1983, 39-40) and occupies the site of medieval parish church and pre-Norman foundation (Anon 1900, 191). Ó hÉailidhe (1984, 142) described the restoration works on Kilgobbin Church as follows; 'In the autumn of 1983 Dublin County Council commenced a programme of conservation on the church ruin in the ancient burial ground of Kilgobbin on the Enniskerry road. The walls and gables are complete, and it was proposed to re-point the stonework of the building and to demolish and rebuild the porch which was in a dangerous condition'. The fabric of the church was heavily repointed making detailed examination of the original stonework very difficult. The lower courses of the E wall of the church appear to be earlier than the fabric in the upper courses of this wall which may suggest that this is a multi-period structure which was modified or partially rebuilt in the early 18th-century rather than the construction of a new building. The segmental headed bellcote with crenellated top on the W gable along with the alternating long and short quoins on the NW and SW corners and slight base batter all appear to be features typical of a medieval church rather than that of an 18th-century building. The church was entered through a segmental-arched doorway at the W end of the N wall which was covered by a projecting porch with similar segmental-arched doorway in the E wall of the porch. The church was lit by a window in the centre of the E wall which was set into a large embrasure that was blocked up in the post-1700 period. Possible traces of a blocked up window in the W wall but this is uncertain due to extensive repointing of church wall. There may have been two windows in the S wall which are now left as large openings but this is uncertain and there are two similar openings in the N wall. A projecting string course is visible running along the top of the N and S side walls of the church. Inside the church are several private burial plots enclosed by cast-iron railings. Attached to the S face of the N wall of the church interior are eight carved stone fragments identified during restoration work in 1983. These comprise four quernstone fragments, a notched stone, (DU025-016006) two tall granite graveslabs (DU025-016002-) and a graveslab fragment (DU025-016005-). The notched stones may have been used to hold the end of a door frame or as a corbel to hold a rood frame. Attached to the S face of the wall of the interior is another graveslab (DU025-016004-) fragment found during restoration work in the graveyard. Fragment of a cross head (DU025-016007-) was found among a heap of stones inside the church. Attached to the E face of the W wall of the porch are seven architectural fragments (DU025-016008-\009-\010-) at the base of the porch wall. Situated on the N slope of Three Rock Mountain on the S side of Kilgobbin Lane, near Stepaside Village. A cross-slab of Rathdown type has been attached to the internal face of the northern wall of Kilgobbin Church ruins (DU025-016001-) which stands in the centre of Kilgobbin graveyard (DU025-016002-), Co. Dublin. Discovered in 1983 when Dublin County Council undertook conservation works at Kilgobbin church and graveyard. Cross-slab described by Ó hÉailidhe (1984, 142) as follows; 'Grave-slab of the Early Christian period built into the porch as a lintel over the west door. Due to the movement of the porch wall this doorway had become dangerous and was blocked up at some period, so that neither face of the slab was visible. It appears, however, to have been face downwards as there is a considerable amount of limewash on the decorated face. The slab is of granite and measures 160cm long, tapering in width from 46cm to 41cm and is 10cm thick. It is rounded at the narrower end and is decorated on one face only. The decoration consists of lightly incised lines running diagonally from comer to comer and forming a saltire cross, and a similar line down the centre of the face. This type of decoration is found on the Rathdown Group of grave slabs, and similar motifs appear on the Rathfarnham slab [DU022-013003-] along with side loops and cup marks (Breen 1981), and on the Whitechurch slab [DU022-030003-] along with herringbone pattern and cup marks (Ó hÉailidhe and Prendergast 1977). This group of slabs has been dated to the Viking period (Ó hÉailidhe 1973)'. The granite slab (L 1.6m), tapers in width (0.46m-0.41m, T 0.1m). Decoration consists of deeply incised lines running diagonally from corner to corner to form a saltire or diagonal cross also known as St Andrew’s Cross or Crux Decussata. An incised line can be seen running down the centre of the slab and there is a shallow cup-mark or small hollow at the centrepoint of the X-shaped cross. Possible traces of a loop or circle and other lines are visible on the surface of the stone. The presence of a vertical line running through a diagonal cross represents I and X which are the Greek letters of I C for the name of Jesus Christ and so this symbol can be seen as a Christogram or a Chi Rho symbol XP. It is a small granite fragment (L 0.33m, Wth 0.2m, T 0.13m) which bears part of a shallow cup-mark with three concentric circles below (Ó hÉailidhe 1984, 142). Discovered in 1983 when Dublin County Council undertook conservation works at Kilgobbin church and graveyard. Graveslab fragment (stone b) described by Ó hÉailidhe (1984, 142) as follows; 'Fragment of a grave slab of the Early Christian period found lying in the graveyard by the stone mason, Mr William Long, who saw the lines on it and put it aside for examination. It is only a small fragment, measuring 33cm by 20cm by 13cm thick, and is also of granite. It bears part of a shallow cupmark and set of three concentric circles. This piece also belongs to the Rathdown group of slabs, on which the cup mark and concentric circles are on of the commonest motifs'. Situated on the N slope of Three Rock Mountain on the S side of Kilgobbin Lane, near Stepaside Village. A church (DU025-016001-) with a plain rectangular plan and a porch/sacristy on the N side. In 1983 Dublin County Council discovered several cross-slabs and other architectural fragments while carrying out conservation works on Kilgobbin church. One of these fragments consisted of a cross-head which was found among a heap of stones inside the church. The fragment of the cross-head is of granite (dims. 0.18m x 0.18m x T 0.09m) and appears to have had a circular panel at the centre and short arms. The central panel is framed by an incised line and raised border. On the other face there is a raised border and one arm of a cross drawn with arcs in relief. Date is uncertain (Ó hÉailidhe 1984, 143). Fragment of a cross-head (stone e) which may have been the finial of the church gable was described by Ó hÉailidhe as follows; 'Fragment of a cross-head found by Mr D. K. C. Pilkington of Glenamuck among a heap of stones inside the church. It is of granite and measures 18cm by 18cm by 9cm thick. The cross appears to have had a circular panel at the centre and short arms. On one face the centre panel is framed by an incised line and raised border. On the other face there is a raised border and one arm of a cross drawn with arcs in relief. The date is uncertain'. The present location of this cross-head is unknown and it is not visible today inside the church ruins. National Monument No. 226 (Harbison 1970, 77). Situated on the S side of Kilgobbin Lane, adjacent to an open green area, downslope from Kilgobbin ecclesiastical complex (Harbison 1992, 116-7). An incomplete ringed granite high-cross stands on the roadside 30m NW of Kilgobbin church (DU025-016001-) and graveyard (DU025-016002-). The broken condition of the head of the high cross was described by the Ordnance Survey in 1837 as follows; 'There is a stone cross with one arm broken off exhibiting a very rude representation of the crucifixion standing near this church (Herity 2001, 5). The southern side of the head of the ringed-cross is missing. The cross-head has the figure of Christ carved onto both faces, the E face representing the Crucifixion while the W face possibly represents the Risen Christ associated with the Last Judgement. A short possible tenon can be seen rising from the top of the cross-head which supported a possible small church-shaped capstone or a capstone of some other form which is now missing. The high cross was described by Ball (1905, 70-1) as; 'It is cut out of a piece of grey granite eight feet [2.4m] high, one foot four inches [0.4m] broad, and eight inches [0.2m] thick. It was originally three feet eight inches [1.1m] over the arms, but the southern arm, with the segment of the circle on that side, is broken off and lost. The cross had a small roll moulding round the edges, but not carried round the ring. On each face we can dimly see the figure of our Lord in the long garment reaching to the ankles. The shaft is carefully fitted into an oblong mortice in a shapeless base stone, which measures four feet nine inches across [1.44m], and has a bullaun, or shallow basin, one foot [0.3m] in diameter cut in its surface'. The shaft (Wth 0.37m x T 0.2m) of the high cross (H 2.5m; head diam. 1.18m) which tapers towards the bottom, is morticed into a roughly rounded-boulder (Wth 1.45m x H 0.6m) forming the base of the high cross. The upper surface of this boulder has a bullaun (DU025-016012-) on its SW side. The edges of the cross-shaft are decorated with a roll moulding with the sides of the shaft bearing no decoration. Running up the centre of the shaft on the E face there is a moulding visible which forms an unidentifiable object at the feet of Christ. The E face of the head of the cross contains a crucifixion scene in low relief where a robed Christ is depicted with long arms outstretched horizontally. A second Christ figure, clothed in a long garment with short stubby arms is visible on the W face of the cross-head. This figure has shortened arms and Harbison suggested that his carving may represent the Risen Christ or Christ in Glory and compared this figure to a similar depiction on the pectoral cross in the Dumbarton Oaks collection (Harbison 1992, 117, 295). Harbison suggested that Kilgobbin Cross can be placed into a group of high crosses such as Cashel (TS061-025006-), Monaincha (TN018-001003-) and Roscrea (TN012-010018-) which depict Crucifixions later in date than an earlier group of high crosses. This group of later Crucifixions he divided into two groups. The cross at Kilgobbin falls into the group where Christ wears a long robe as opposed to the other group where Christ wears a perizonium or a loin-cloth (Harbison 1992, 283-4). The figure of Christ on the W face of Kilgobbin Cross has been compared to the figure of Christ on the E face of the high cross at Moone (KD036-031002-), Co. Kildare (Harbison 1992, 295). The cross at Kilgobbin is said to have been discovered buried in Kilgobbin graveyard (DU025-016002-) in the early 1800s and then re-erected in the present position. This impressive tower house stands in private ground at the foot of the Dublin Mountains. It was associated with the Walsh family (Goodbody 1993, 19-22). It rises to three storeys with stepped battlements marked by a string course and a SE corner tower which projects above parapet level. It is built of randomly coursed granite blocks with small packing stones. The entrance is in the S wall through a pointed segmental arched opening. It is rectangular in plan (int. dims. L 8.2m; Wth 4.8m) with a vaulted ground floor on a N-S axis and a stair turret in the SE. The interior is lit by a slit ope in the S wall. The N end collapsed in the 19th-century but the N and E walls survive to foundation level. The base of the walls are considerably undercut in the interior. There are beam holes visible at the top of the walls where the vault starts over the ground floor. The former existence of a loft at this level is indicated by the presence of a slit ope in the S wall. There are remains of a fireplace on the W wall of the upper floor and a square-headed rectangular window, with chamfered granite jambs. A lookout platform is carried on a squinch arch (Anon 1900, 190-91, Anon 1914, 227-8; 1983, 79-81). In the field to the N of the tower house a medieval ditch (L 14m, Wth 4m, d 1.2-1.3m) was excavated in 2003. The ditch deposits yielded unburnt bone and four sherds of medieval pottery (Hagen, I. 2006, 163). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy. This site was revealed during monitoring of topsoil-stripping (02E0906) associated with construction works for a mixed residential development at Kilgobbin, Stepaside, Co. Dublin. The small Bronze Age cremation-burial complex was uncovered, along with post-medieval activity (02E1220), in an area reserved for residential buildings, bounded to the SW and NW by the townland boundary between Kilgobbin and Newtown Little. The area of activity measured 3m E–W by 3.5m. Excavation took place from 22 to 31 July 2002. The site was on NW-sloping ground overlooking the valley of Kilgobbin stream, with rising ground to the NW. The features revealed included two cremation burials (F1 and F3), one of which (F1) contained a coarse pottery vessel, two further pits (F5 and F19), and a complex of post-holes and stake-holes, concentrated to the SW of it. Although most of the features were identified after the removal of the overlying topsoil, some were defined only after successive trowelling and the combination of rainfall and watering. This applied particularly to some of the small stake-holes (F15–17) and pit F19 to the SW of the stake-hole complex F6–7. F2, however, though first appearing as a valid feature, proved to be a soil discoloration, possibly originating from the adjacent cremation burial, F1. All features in this area cut into the natural, yellow/brown, gravelly boulder clay and were revealed immediately below the thin topsoil cover, which reached a depth of 0.15–0.2m. Cremation burials Cremation burial F1 was oval, oriented N–S, and measured 0.8m by 0.6m by 0.28m deep. Before excavation, cremated bone was visible in the charcoal-rich fill of loose, brown, sandy clay. An examination of the southern half of the feature revealed a number of broken sherds of coarse pottery throughout the depth of the pit. These are likely to be of Middle to Late Bronze Age date. A granite boulder was situated at the base of the pit, set into the natural, yellow/brown, gravelly boulder clay. Examination of the northern half of the feature indicated that a largely intact vessel was present. The remainder of the burial was removed for excavation by Cathy Daly of Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd. The interior of the vessel was filled with burnt bone and charcoal-rich soil. Directly beneath the base of the vessel was a thin layer of redeposited natural. Below this again was a deposit of charcoal and burnt bone, c. 0.05–0.06m deep. Within the vessel the concentration of bone appeared to be closer to the surface along the S- to SW-facing sides and slightly deeper along the other sides, suggesting that the vessel may have been buried at a slight angle. The ceramic vessel is circular with a flat base and was buried in an upright position. The base was slightly convex owing to post-deposition distortion. Although the base is complete, the sides are fragmentary and none of the rimsherds is in situ. The vessel has pressure cracks and distortion that occurred during burial, including movement of broken pieces. The minimum height of the vessel is 140mm, and the maximum internal diameter is 200mm. Cremation burial F3 was 1.8m NW of F1. This pit was roughly oval, oriented NW/SE, and measured 0.46m by 0.4m by 0.36m deep. The single fill was a charcoal-rich, grey/brown, sandy clay with small fragments of cremated bone mixed throughout its depth. A round flint scraper was retrieved at the centre of the pit, 0.14m below the surface of the feature. The truncated remains of a small stake-hole (F4), 0.15m in diameter and 0.09m deep, were found 0.55m NE of this burial. An oval pit, oriented NW/SE and measuring 0.5m by 0.3m by 0.14m deep, was situated 0.25m W of F3. Stake-hole complex This complex was 1.3m SW of burial F1 and 1.5m SE of burial F3. F7 originally appeared as a curvilinear feature E of F6, which was oval in plan. Four further features were uncovered to the SW of this complex, including three small stake-holes (F15–17) and a post-hole (F19). After excavation, F6 and F7 were found to represent a collection of eight small stake-holes with a post-hole (F18) at the south-east side. The stake-holes averaged 0.15m in diameter and 0.1m deep. The fill was a moderately compact, grey/brown, sandy clay with occasional charcoal flecks. Post-hole F18 was 0.3m in diameter and 0.11m deep. Its fill was a mid-brown, dry, compact, sandy clay with charcoal flecking. This complex was oriented north-west/south-east and measured 1.4m by 0.9m. It may have been part of some form of ritual related to the burials. Features to the SW of the stake-hole complex Three small stake-holes (F15–17) were found 0.2m SW of the stake-hole complex. These were set in a NW/SE alignment, c. 0.8m long, and were 0.08–0.12m in diameter and 0.05–0.1m deep. The fills were identical to those of the stake-holes described above. F19 was a pit, 0.2m west of F16–17. It measured 0.38m E–W by 0.3m and contained a post-hole, 0.18m in diameter and 0.11m deep, on its eastern side. All features described are most likely to be associated with the stake-hole complex nearby (Hagen 2002). A fire bowl and a hearth were located 8m to the S. A hearth was uncovered in the vicinity of the fire bowl. Associated with the hearth was a v-shaped structure composed of post-and stake-holes. A disturbed pit containing Early-mid-Bronze age pottery lay nearby (Cryerhall 2006, 162). Compiled by: Geraldine Stout and Padraig Clancy. Revised upload on: 26 May 2018.
