On the same surface is a small inscribed cross with expanded terminals and the letters IL (Turner 1983, 14; O h Ealidhe & Prendergast 1977, Fig. 29, 141-2). Situated on the grounds of Larch Hill on gently sloping pasture near the valley bottom W of Kilmashogue Mountain. A megalithic tomb in a collapsed condition with a ruined chamber facing uphill to the E. One of the portal stones, almost square in section, still stands (H 2.5m). The collapsed roofstone covers the chamber (L 3.8m; Wth 2.65m; D 0.7m). There are a number of large collapsed stones lying close to these structural stones. Borlase (1897, 2, 394-5) describes a circle of stones which is not apparent today (Turner 1983, 6-7; Anon.1914, 225-6; Price 1940, 124). Situated in a forest clearing on a level platform on the N slopes of Kilmashogue Mountain. From an account of this monument prior to the growth of forestry in the environs it commanded extensive views to the N, E and W (Kilbride-Jones 1953) . This site comprises a gallery with a curved alignment ENE-SW (L 6m; Wth at SSW 1.8m; Wth at NNE 1.5m) divided into a main chamber and an antechamber. It is enclosed by three lines of orthostats, forming a wedge-shaped plan. Only the N portion of the cairn survives (D. 0.80m) but it appears originally to be oval in form without an obvious kerb. To the S the remains of a kerb has been identified, as a curving arc of stone-sockets, some with packing stones. The antechamber is composed of four orthostats and at the NE a portal stone with its main axis at right angles to the chamber matched with a similarly placed stone socket on the other side. The chamber is defined by a rear back stone and front septal stone and orthostatic side walls. These consist of three parallel close-set rows of orthostats. The side wall at the N leans sharply inwards. According to the excavator this happened soon after construction. The floor of the chamber, which had been cut into the subsoil below the level of the antechamber floor was covered by a thin grey deposit with some cremated bone and charcoal and a single unworked piece of flint. The backstone was cut into subsoil below the level of the chamber floor while the septal stone which is well squared off sits on the chamber floor itself held in place between orthostats with cairn material. Two secondary features, Cist 1 and Cist 2, at the centre of small sub-cairns, are located in the NE quadrant of the cairn, to the rear of the gallery. Cist 1 is composed of four stones set on edge measuring internally 1.05m by 0.60m and is 0.45m in depth, covered by a domed capstone. The cist floor was fire-reddened and it contained a single upright food-vessel, near the NE side of the cist. Cist 2 lay to the S of Cist 1. It is composed of three small stones set on their long edges, and contained another food-vessel and quantities of cremated bone. Within the overall cairn material are another two dense concentrations of cairn material, in addition to those over the cists, possibly indicative of more secondary burials, as well as a small fireplace defined by stones and filled with powdered charcoal just NE of Cist 1. A third secondary feature, Cist 3, is located in the ante-chamber. It comprises a circular area in a circular pit dug into the subsoil and lined by eight stones forming a polygonal cist with a single thick stone as a floor and with a capstone above. On the stone floor an inverted cinerary urn was placed containing large amounts of cremated bone (Kilbride-Jones 1953, 461-79; Healy 1975a 1-19; Turner 1983) This is a National Monument in State Ownership (No. 493). These partially peat-covered features are located on the N and W slopes of Kilmashogue Mountain. They comprise a network of drystone-built walls stretching for c. 1km. The main axis of the earlier co-axial system runs NW-SE cutting across the contours with a focus, on the summit. The second system radiates from a subcircular enclosure in a naturally level platform on the N slopes of the mountain. This impressive enclosure (int. diam. c. 60m) is defined by a drystone-built wall (Wth 2m; H 1m). The interior has uneven stony areas. Aerial photographic coverage of the site indicates a central internal enclosure (OS Flight 9, 2271). There is an opening in the NW. Field walls radiate from the enclosure at the NE, SSE, SSW and W and across the main field system running NW-SE (Cooney 1985, 28-30). The scale of the earlier co-axial field system and the occurrence of megalithic tombs in the vicinity suggests that it is of prehistoric date and unique within the county. Detached gable-fronted church, built 1827, with additions of 1868 and 1968. Seven-bay nave, with gabled apse to east and gabled vestry to south, added 1868. Incorporated tower with needle spire to west front. Coursed granite walls with string courses, and ashlar stonework to buttresses. Chamfered granite surrounds to tall lancet windows. Tall lancet doorway to west with timber tongue and groove door. Pitched slate roof. Transverse pointed arches to interior, with timber pews and panelling. Many carved marble military memorials.

Pitched artificial slate roof with half-dormers to front. Roughcast rendered flanking quadrant screen walls. Modern L-plan extension to north and east.

Pitched corrugated-iron roofs centred on pitched (gabled) corrugated-iron roof with moss-covered ridges, cut-granite coping to gable with crocketed obelisk pinnacle to apex, and no rainwater goods surviving on creeper- or ivy-covered eaves. Creeper- or ivy-covered walls retaining sections of lime rendered or roughcast surface finish; part creeper- or ivy-covered walls (tower) retaining sections of lime rendered or roughcast surface finish with lichen-spotted cut-granite chamfered stringcourses. Elliptical-headed central carriageway (tower) with red brick voussoirs. Lancet window openings (second stage) with cut-granite sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds with no fittings surviving. Roundels (top stage) with cut-granite surrounds originally framing clock faces. Elliptical-headed carriageways with red brick voussoirs. Set in grounds shared with Marlay House with granite ashlar piers to courtyard having cut-granite capping supporting spear head-detailed double gates.

Roughcast walls bellcast over rendered plinth with precast concrete urn finial-topped cut-granite coping to parapet.
