The OS 1st edition map (1837) shows 'Windmill stump' on an eminence in a field in Knock townland. This is not shown on Rocque's map (1760) and, in consequence probably dates to the later 18th century. Site of Windmill adjacent to the road which runs up a high ridge with the reservoir to the the south and undulating hills including Knockbrack to the north. High ground currently under gorse and long grass, drops steeply to pasture which has been fenced off. A severly truncated fulacht fia was identified during topsoil stripping for a pipeline (Tobin 2004, 170). Located at the base of an east-west facing slope at the edge of a bog. A sub-circular trough (L2m, Wth 1.8m, D 0.2m) was excavated. It was lined with a thin brushwood mat. A second trough lay to the NW (L1.25m, Wth 1.18m, D 0.58m). Excavated. Topsoil stripping for a section of pipeline in 2002 revealed the severely truncated remains of a fulacht fia. Located in low, marginal land with a water source to the east. Traces of a burnt mound (L10.2m, Wth 2m, D 0.2m). A possible trough was identifiable as a dense concentration of firing material (L1.2m, Wth 0.6m)which lay 5m N of the main spread. It had a flattened, U-shaped profile with steep sides and a gradually sloping concave base (Tobin 2004, 170). Excavated. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
