The fish weir depicted crossing the River Liffey at Lucan on the 1837 ed. OSi 6-inch map may have been built on the site of the medieval fish weirs belonging to the medieval 'fishery of Lucan'. A second weir (DU017-019010-) depicted on the 1837 ed. OSi map located on the River Liffey 1.2km to the W is an alternative possible location for the medieval fishery of Lucan. In 1295 Hugh de la Felde and Alianora his wife, were dispossessed or disseised of their freehold in Lucan which included 'a third of the fishery of the water of Lyuekan from the ford of Mich[ael]. Luterel to the ford of Athbo' (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 222). In response to this dispossession Hugh de la Felde and his wife Alianora replied that; 'As to the fishery, they say that Rob[ert]. de Wyleby and his wife are in seisin of the third part, and they pray judgment. And Hugh and Alianora say that Robert and his wife have nothing in the fishery, and put themselves on the assise' (ibid.). A few years later in 1306 King Edward sent his writ to John Wogan Jusiticiar of Ireland; 'on the part of John de Hausteyd and Roesia his wife, it is shown that whereas they ought to have a moiety of the fish taken in the water of Anneliffy [Liffey], between their land of Lyuekan on one side, and the land of the Salmon Leap [DU017-014----], which was of Ralph Pipard, on the other side of the water. And they, and the ancestors of Roesia, had the moiety of the fish taken in said water between said lands, and Ralph Pipard and his ancestors had the other moiety, while the land of Salmon Leap was in their hands. Ric[hard]. de Bereford treasurer of Ireland, when said land of the Salmon Leap, by grant which Ralph made to the King, came to the King's hand, immediately impeded John and Roesia from having the moiety of the fish. Wogan is to enquire, and if it appear that John and Roesia and her ancestors had the moiety of the fish in said water until so impeded, then to permit them to have the moiety of the fish taken' (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 257). A response to this legal writ from local jurors stated that; 'the fish taken between the land of Lyuecan and the land of Salmon Leap were never accustomed to be divided between the lords of those towns, but each of the lords was accustomed to have his fishery to the middle (ad medittatem) of the water, in places where the river of Aneliffy separates their lands from each other on opposite sides, so that the lord of Lyuecan had fish taken towards his land, and Ralph towards his land; and they were accustomed to fish with engines or nets. They say also that the weirs of Kilmaynan [Kilmainham], Chapel Isolde [Chapelizod], Palmereston [Palmerstown], Lyuecan [Lucan], and S. Katerine [St. Catherine's] are raised, and the water in them much narrowed, in prejudice of the King, and deterioration of his weirs and fishery. Because they say that in those weirs, the course of the water was accustomed to be of) the breadth of 16 feet at least, with sufficient depth for the passage of boats, bundles of firewood, and fish. Therefore the Sheriff is commanded to go to those parts, and cause the weir newly raised at Lyuecan [Lucan] to be wholly pulled down, and the other weirs, by view of the jurors, reduced in height, and the course of the water widened. So that those weirs be in the same state as they were of old accustomed to be, and the course of the water likewise. And that said injurious things be wholly put away' (Cal. justic. rolls, Ire. Edw. I, 258-9). the 1315 'John de Hanstede, knight, grants and quitclaims to Robert de Notingham, citizen of Dublin, his heirs and assigns all his right and claim in a water-mill at Lotereleston in the county of Dublin and in the manor of Lyuecan with all its appurtenances in the same county, viz., in messuages, lands, meadows, woods, heaths, parks, moors, marshes, mills, sites and seats of mills, waters, ponds, fisheries, warrens, river banks, weirs, streams, quarries, rabbit-warrens, homages, rents, services and customs of free tenants, burgesses, farmers, cottagers and betaghs, both English and Irish.' (Curtis 1932, 201, No. 505). In 1323 the Great Rolls of the Pipe of the Irish Exchequer, Walter de la Pulle, escheator of Ireland, accounts for the fisheries of the manor of Lucan (Went 1954, 54). Arthur Went (1954, 54) concluded that 'These few documents indicate clearly that the fishery of Lucan in the fourteenth century was exceedingly valuable'. The method of fishing described above were 'engines and nets' which indicates the construction of weirs and use of drift netting. The weir west of Lucan bridge, marked 'Weir, Salmon Pass' was possibly built on one of the sites of the medieval fishery of Lucan. One of three bridges spanning the River Liffey in Lucan. The present Lucan Bridge which spans the River Liffey was built in 1814 to replace an earlier bridge (DU017-019007---) located downriver 160m to the W which in turn was built in the 18th-century to replace the medieval bridge (DU017-016----) located 240m to the W. The 19th-century bridge was described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) as a; 'Single-arch road bridge over river, 1814. Coursed squared limestone walls and abutments. Segmental arch with slender ashlar voussoirs and double keystone. Cast-iron balusters to parapet with stone coping' (www.buildingsofireland.ie; NIAH Reg. No. 11201090). No bridge is shown at this location of Rocque's 1760 Map of County Dublin. This bridge was described by Simington and O'Keeffe (1991, 270-4) as 'the longest span masonry arch ever built in Ireland. There is one clear-cut and informative mention by Bernard Mullins in his presidential address to ICEI in 1859; "this structure, consisting of a single arch' of 111ft [33.8m] span and 22ft [6.7m] rise, like many of the same period, is of a far more expensive character than the occasion called for. Its construction was attended with no difficulty, a good foundation having been easily obtained, with suitable materials immediately at hand, and yet the cost of construction exceeded £9,000. Mr George Knowles was the architect and, probably, the contractor, an arrangement common in those days, owing to the difficulty of obtaining the services of a sufficiently competent person of the latter class, together with the want of capital, there having been no banks to assist enterprise of that description". The date of its erection was solved by de Courcy who found that the metal balustrades were made by the Phoenix Iron Works of Dublin in 1814. Lucan is a segmental arc with a rise-to-span ratio of 0.20, whereas Sarah [Bridge] is three-centred, perhaps oval, with a ratio of 0.29; Lismore is 0.2. The ashlar masonry in Lucan is superb and the see-through iron balustrade parapets and unobtrusive spandrels give it a superb overall appearance from the river. The skewback, resting on an impost, is formed of three stones with a springing face at 45° to the horizontal. This is unusual for such a large arch; however, the springings are backed each side by solid 6ft [1.8m] thick pier abutments up the road level, giving a large vertical load; more-over, it springs from less than 3ft [0.9m] above the solid rock; consequently there is little risk of horizontal slippage resulting from the horizontal component of the arch thrust. This, of course, has been proved over a service life of 176 years. The actual span was checked by Dublin Co. Council in 1990 and is 110ft [33.5m].'
