Greenfield site located to the north of Kilshane Avenue. Recently used for tillage. No surface expression prior to discovery. Now fully excavated. In 2022, a geophysical survey (Detection Licence: 22R0036) identified a semi-circular magnetic response close to a modern field boundary. It measured c. 28m in diameter and appeared to represent the partial remains of an enclosure which has been truncated by a modern concrete roadway. These features were confirmed by archaeological testing in May of that year. The feature was then fully excavated under Licence 23E0720 from October 2023 to February 2024. Site 6 comprised of a large sub-circular enclosure that measured 42m (east – west) by 35m (north – south) in internal diameter. A large curvilinear ditch forming an annexed enclosure was identified to the west of the main enclosure ditch. To the south of the enclosure, a number of intersecting linear and curvilinear ditches were present. Radiocarbon dating has indicated that the Site 6 enclosure was in use during the Early Medieval Period, between the late 7th and 10th century, with some later activity in the Medieval Period (11th – 14th centuries) (Baldwin 2024) Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Catríona Baldwin - DU014-144: Fulacht fia, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU014-144----. In 2022, a geophysical survey (Detection Licence: 22R0036) identified a identified a series of responses and trends that formed a sub-circular enclosure measuring c. 45m x 38m overall (Site 6). Several isolated responses were found within the interior of the enclosure. These were suggestive of pit-type features. To the north of the enclosure, broad responses indicative of burnt material were identified (Site 7). These features were confirmed by archaeological testing in May of that year. Both sites were then fully excavated under Licence 24E0411 from March 2024 to November 2024. Site 7 comprised a ploughed out fulacht fia or burnt mound, with associated troughs and pits, which was truncated by a series of later linear ditches. The fulacht fia was situated in low lying ground that flooded periodically during the winter months and after heavy rain. Two troughs were identified within the southeastern quadrant. The larger trough contained three postholes and two pits within the base. The radiocarbon dating has confirmed that the Site 7 Fulacht Fia was in use during the Early to Middle Bronze Age. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien based on details provided by Catríona Baldwin Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Mooretown. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: About 1 in 20 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
