Pre-development excavation of part of a complex of curvilinear and linear features (DU005-057008-) identified from aerial photography uncovered seven souterrains between the south-west and south-east quadrants, while other features may have been the remains of souterrains. The souterrains had narrow passages and 1–2 circular chambers each. Where there was evidence of construction, the circular chambers (2.3–3m in diameter) were corbelled and were 1–2m in height. The passages were roofed with flat lintels. In some cases the souterrains coincided with the ditch and it was clear that they cut into ditch fill and were later than the ditches (Carroll 2008, 72). Formerly located in a hollow on a hillside it is now within the open space of a housing estate. Described in 1974 as a rectangular stone-lined basin (dims. 1.6m N-S x 0.6m E-W) with remains of a masonry wall on the north and west sides under an ash tree. No longer venerated (Healy 1975, 17; Ó Danachair 1958, 2, 72). Folklore collected from Balrothery School recorded that; 'There are several holy wells around the village of Balrothery. There is a holy well three fields away from the south wall of the school and close to the near ditch of that field (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0784, Page 89;https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4498253/4383805)'. The well was piped and capped with concrete (Skyvova 2005, 62). Subsequent landscaping raised the surrounding ground level significantly. A manhole cover marks its location. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Updated by: Christine Baker Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 11 April 2023 - DU005-057008: Hilltop enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU005-057008-. An aerial photograph shows a group of circular and sub-circular cropmarks of enclosures covering an area of c. 8 acres (CUCAP, BDS 37). Located on a N facing hillside E of Balrothery village. Pre-development testing in 1998 identified a complex of concentric ditches associated with occupation layers which follow the contours in the field (Baker & Swan 1998, 51-2). Further excavations in the S quadrant revealed a hilltop enclosure comprising a large number of ditches, burnt features, structures and souterrains (DU005-013003-). There was human burial at the top of the hill. The finds- E Ware, bronze pins, iron knives, bone comb, a spindle whorl and glass beads - and radiocarbon dates suggest the site was occupied throughout the first millennium AD. The hilltop enclosure was defended by ditched fortifications from the 3rd century to the 7th/8th century. An open settlement evolved but had fallen out of use by the 9th century (Carroll 2008, 21). The remainder of the ditched enclosures and cropmarks are preserved within the open space of the housing estate.
