Situated on an artificial rise in a triangular green within Rush Village. This is a three-storey, cylindrical-shaped tower (ext. diam.6.10m, wall T 0.95m). It is built of randomly coursed masonry, which was once rendered. Now covered in graffiti. There is a relieving arch on the E side. It has opposed doorways in the N and S with flat segmental arches. These have been secured with metal doors. The interior is lit by slit opes above the doors in the SE and NNE. A basement feature extends south east of the tower (L 2m). (Healy 1975, 20). The vault arch has been stabilized. Situated on a small headland south of Loughshinney village. Prior to c. 1838 the site comprised a circular cairn (diam. c. 30m) with a funnel-shaped entrance and a rectangular chamber (L 2.4m; Wth 1.8m). Human bones were found in the chamber and midden material containing a possible microlith (DU008-013003)-) was found underneath (Newenham 1838, 247; Flanagan 1984, 15). Two cist burials were found in the cairn and a third W of the kerbstones (DU008-013002-).The cairn was partially removed by land improvement in 1838, the remainder incorporated into a field boundary. Remains of this field boundary extend almost from the cliff edge for c. 21m NS. Large stones (> 1m diam.) and small stone cairn material are visible within the overgrown field boundary. One large boulder is out lying c.2m south-east of the field boundary. No markings or decoration visible on these stones. Magnetic gradiometry undertaken by the Discovery Programme (Licence 08R247) did not succeed in establishing a location for the passage tomb as a large part of the area had been subject to intensive ploughing. Rush Martello Tower No. 8 (Kerrigan 1995, 174). According to Kerrigan (1995, 168) construction of the Dublin area Martello Towers and their batteries commenced in 1804 under the supervision of Colonel Benjamin Fisher of the Royal Engineers and by December 1805 all towers were armed and complete. Kerrigan (ibid.) recorded that; 'Twelve towers were constructed north of Dublin: each tower mounted one 24-pounder, apart from the tower on Ireland's Eye with two 24-pounders. No batteries were constructed with these towers'. Located in a private garden on Harbour Road overlooking the E coast. Two pillars on the street indicate land entrance to tower. Access now completely overgrown. This is a squat cylindrical tower with a parapet level marked by offsets. The entrance is in the W. It has a rendered finish which has begun to fall away especially around the door. Bricked features have been added to roof. There are flat roofed chalets built around the tower (Kerrigan 1996, 175). It sat within a circular stone boundary wall now visible as a low circular bank and fencing. It was manned by a full complement of artillerymen until the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1815. It was then occupied by an invalid Gunner of the Royal artillery until at least 1830. The tower was handed over to the Coast Guard in 1865. It was sold in the 1930's by the Minister for Defence (Bolton et al. 2012, 169). Holy well described in 1975 as a; 'small stream flowing down onto rocky strand. No regular pool but one or two natural hollows. Fragment of wall just above high tide water mark may have been intended to collect water' (Henry A. Wheeler 20/05/1975, SMR File). Folklore collected from Rush School recorded the following tradition about this well; 'There is another well on the South Strand called "Tubber Colleen," (St Mac Cuilín, Lusk) but no saints name connected with it. If a stranger takes a drink out of this well it is said that he will make his home in Rush' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0786, Page 61; https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4498364/4384286). Possible promontory fort described by Casey (2003, 17) as follows; ‘A 4m wide straight earthen bank, probably a field boundary, cuts off a subrectangular headland measuring 90m long and 90m wide. The former presence of a megalithic tomb on the site and a possible levelled enclosure close to the north-eastern corner as well as the substantial bank, shows that the headland was occupied in the past and may suggest that the headland was a defended promontory fort. However, not enough remains to be certain.
