Natural spring well in a waterlogged area at the foot of an ash tree with castle (DU005-004----) 50m to S. Lady Well described in 1958 as a 'small well lined with stones with a slow spring of clear water among the roots of an old ash tree. The well was visited and prayers said there during living memory; the water was applied to sore eyes and was drunk for the relief of toothache headache. Rags were hung on the tree as offerings. Known locally as 'Lady Well' ' (Ó Danachair 1958, 2, 72). Holy well described by Henry A. Wheeler in 1973 as a 'muddy pool at foot of large ash-tree. Described to me by local informant as having rags tied on to the bush or tree, but I did not see any' (SMR File 21/03/1973; 18/07/1974). Could also be referred to as Graham's well (Skyvova, 2005, 65) Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 11 April 2023 - DU005-004: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU005-004----. Located on a NW-facing slope under pasture at a low point in the landscape near a stream. The remains of a square building (ext. dims.9m NW-SE; 7m SW-NE) survive as foundations except in the south-west where there is a 3-4 course section of wall (H 1m). It is built of randomly coursed masonry which is well mortared. There are no dateable architectural features present (Healy 1975, 17). This is probably the building referred to in the Civil survey (1654-6) as a 'burnt castle' held by Elizabeth Finglas (Simington 1945, 6). The Corn Mill on Tanner's Lane, depicted on the 1837 ed. OSi 6-inch map, probably stands on the site of a watermill shown on the 1655-9 Down Survey Parish map of Balrothery (NLI, MS 714/3). On this map a watermill is shown standing on the west bank of a watercourse running roughly N-S in the NE quadrant of the townland of Stephenstown. On the map the watermill is shown standing on a watercourse which forms the boundary with glebe land which today forms the boundary of the townland of Glebe North. The location of the Corn Mill depicted on the 1837 ed. OSi 6-inch map closely matches the location of the mill on the Down Survey parish map. The E boundary of the townland of Stephenstown follows the line of the watercourse depicted on the Down Survey map. A second watermill (DU005-050----) on the Down Survey parish map is shown standing on the E bank of the same watercourse to the N in an area annotated on the map as the ‘little Farme of Ballebriggan’. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Dublin recorded that in 1641 the townland of ‘Stevenstowne’ measuring 180a in size was in the possession of Elizabeth Finglas of Stephenstown an ‘Irish Papist’ held by ‘her Joineture by Richard ffinglas of Westpellstowne her late husband’ (Simington 1945, 6). The Civil Survey recorded that on the lands of Stephenstown there stood ‘one burnt castle [DU005-004----] & one Mill valued by ye Jury at ten poundes’ (ibid.). The 1769 Will of Roger Palmer of Palmerstown listed ‘Millstown with the mill race, part of Milestown cut across by the river adjoining Christopher Darcy’s holding, Knock, the castle lands and Plunkets parks, Turkinstown and Stephenstown with the mill thereof, in co. Dublin’ as part of his estate (Abstract of Wills 1536-1858, 222-3). In the vicinity of a souterrain (DU005-052001-) excavations in 2005 revealed a hearth and three postholes were uncovered (05E0098). Further investigations uncovered a bivallate ringfort (DU005-115) and associated sub-rectangular field system, part of which was excavated and dated 7th-10th centuries AD (Kavanagh, 2011). prehistoric, medieval and post-medieval activity also recorded in the vcinity. Discovered during grading operations in advance of building on a south-facing site in a field of lowland pasture. Comprises a long, curving, drystone-built passage (L 22.75m; H 0.8-1m; Wth 0.75-0.95m) which runs on a WSW-ENE axis. The floor of this passage slopes down gradually in line with the terrain. A circular, unroofed chamber with traces of corbelling (diam.5m; H 0.6-0.8m) entered from a short passage (L 1.5m) opens off the W side of the main passage. A sherd of medieval pottery was found in the upper fill of the chamber indicating a medieval date for its collapse. A second section of passage leading towards the chamber, was exposed in further works. The site has since been covered (Clinton 1998, 120-22 ). Archaeological investigations in the vicinity uncovered a bivallate ringfort (DU005-115) and early medieval field system (Kavanagh, 2011). Walls of stone and the roof of modern slate (formerly partially corrugated iron and before that thatched). Chimney on the east gable is stone of post medieval type. Pre-development geophysical survey (Licence Ref: 07R0011 and 07R0158) identified a large bivallate circular enclosure with a projected diameter of c.60m. The responses recorded from detailed survey were unusually strong, and from this high range of magnetic variation it can be expected that substantial remains of burning / firing activity are present (Nicholls 2007). This enclosure is associated with interconnecting ditches encompassing an area of 200m x 50m (DU005-115001-). Sub-rectangular field system associated with bivallate ringfort (DU005-115----). A 67.5m section of the ditch to the western limit of the field system was excavated (07E0836 Ext.) in advance of road construction. As were two associated internal ditches and pit activity. Section of ditch excavated was U-shaped average width 3.9m at upper tapering to 0.6m at base, max. depth 2.4m –fills of silt, sand and clay with considerable quantities of animal bone. Radiocarbon dates from wood recovered near ditch base were 673-858 AD while the upper portion dated to 779-960 AD. the uppermost fill of the ditch produced a copper stick pin dated late 12th-early 13th century. Internal to the ditch was a key-hole shaped cereal drying containing carbonised oat, barley and wheat. the majority of the site has been preserved in situ. Excavated in advance of proposed development (Licence no. 10E0010) the house was circular in plan (c.5m diam.) and defined by a series of eight postholes. A curvilinear slot trench (11m x 0.5m) was located to the S of the postholes. A possible hearth and two pits were located within the interior. Radiocarbon dating of alder charcoal from the hearth returned a calibrated date of 1020-830 BC indicating Late Bronze Age activity (Long 2010, 16). Two flint blades recovered from the fills were dated to the early Mesolithic period and are interpreted as being re-deposited within the kiln. Two postholes were located either side of the kiln bowl, or may have formed a sub-structure associated with the kiln (Kavanagh 2011, 21). Rocque’s 1760 Map of County Dublin shows a ‘Windmill’ on the N side of a road, opposite the ‘The White Hart’ inn (DU005-054----). On this map the windmill is shown as a tower with a conical-shaped roof and four sails, standing on top of a hill (Rocque 1762). The first edition of the OSi 6-inch map shows a ‘Pigeon Ho.’ at this location. It is possible that the windmill was converted into a dovecote or pigeon house in the late 18th or early 19th-century.
