Skerries Martello Tower No. 11 on Red Island (Kerrigan 1995, 174). According to Kerrigan (1995, 168) construction of the Dublin area Martello Towers and their batteries commenced in 1804 under the supervision of Colonel Benjamin Fisher of the Royal Engineers and by December 1805 all towers were armed and complete. Kerrigan (ibid.) recorded that; 'Twelve towers were constructed north of Dublin: each tower mounted one 24-pounder, apart from the tower on Ireland's Eye with two 24-pounders. No batteries were constructed with these towers'. Situated on an elevated position in a park on the S side of Red Island overlooking another martello tower on Shenick Island. It was built in the centre of the island, to protect the approaches and the landing place at Skerries. This is a well preserved, squat, cylindrical tower, built of coursed ashlar masonry. Interior is lit by rectangular openings (blocked) on all sides. S doorway above ground level is defended by machicolation. A second doorway was inserted into the N. An offset marks the upper portion. The tower remained in use by the gunners of the Royal Artillery until it was disarmed in 1874. Archibald Reid, Master Gunner, was in charge of the tower between 1848 and 1874. Disarmed in 1874, Skerries Martello was subsequently used as a home, coal depot, tearooms and eventually became the focal point of Red island holiday camp from the 1950s until the early 1970s.(Bolton et al. 2012 178-9). Located on a prominent rise above the village of Skerries. Comprises a straight-sided cylindrical structure (int. diam.3.80m, c.12.2m h.) with diametrically opposed entrances at east and west. Lit by plain rectangular windows above doorways and on south side. A 'tower' windmill (cap alone turns), 4-sail (would have been canvas). Approximately 3 stone courses were added to the original structure and a concrete capping. The replica thatch and wooden beamed cap then added. There is a plinth at base (H 0.30m, W 0.20m) (Ní Ghabhláin, 1987). Shown in a circular enclosure marked 'Fort' on 1837 OS 6-inch map. A raised rounded bank surrounds the base. On a prominent rise overlooking Skerries. It is a five-storey, tapering tower (int. diam.4.5m) with diametrically opposed entrances at north and south and three pairs of windows in the east and in the southwest. The 'Great' Windmill' measures c.15m in height; diam. sail c.20m. It was originally built as a four-sail windmill but following a fire c.1844 was transformed into a 5 sail shuttered (Ní Ghabhláin 1987). Contains two pairs of grinding stones and hoist. There is a pair of millstones on the spindle in the interior. Shown in a circular enclosure on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No trace of this today except for a scarped ridge. Probably constructed as a track for the tail pole (Ní Ghabhláin 1987, 30). Possibly occupies the site of a windmill mentioned in lease of monastic lands of Holmpatrick to Sir Thomas of Baggotrath in 1578 (D'Alton 1976 (2nd edition) 225). Restored by Fingal County Council. Situated towards the base of a prominent ridge overlooking Skerries. A 19th-century mill complex occupies the site of a watermill mentioned in the 16th-century extents of monastic possessions for the parish of Holmpatrick (White, 1943, 49). Described in the Civil Survey 1654-56 as a 'decayed watermill' (Simington 1945, 54). Field walking (May 2014) of the south-facing sloping field to the rear of the present complex recovered diagnostic late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flints. Situated at the entrance of the Skerries Mill complex. Site formerly a hockey pitch that was always subject to flooding-allowed to return to a pond and is currently a bird sanctuary. The well is located to the north west corner of the pond but is completely inaccessible. Marked by a dead tree. This is an enclosed spring well. Access down steps. The name 'kibe', according to the Placenames Commission, means 'chillblain' in Middle English, suggesting that this well may have had curative powers and be of medieval origin (Pers comm. The 18th-century bell-tower of a church in the centre of Holmpatrick (Inis Pádraig/Patrick's Island) graveyard stands on the site of the medieval parish church which was built in 1220 as an Augustinian priory and was dissolved in 1537 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 154). The church (DU005-031001-) and graveyard (DU005-031002-) of Holmpatrick stands 720m to the S of Skerries and 200m W of the Dublin coast with St. Patrick's Island (DU005-019----) 2.1km to the NE. According to Gwynn and Hadcock (ibid., 178) the 'convent of St. Patrick's Island [DU005-019----] was moved to a more commodious place, Holm Patric (on the mainland, Co. Dublin), in 1220 by Henry of London, abp. [archbishop] of Dublin. The old name was retained, at any rate for a time. Philip was pr[ior]. of the Island of St. Patrick in 1229. Pr[ior]. Peter Manne d[ied]. 1537. His successor, Philip Corre, on 13 Dec. 1537 was granted a pension of £8 from the previous Easter, and in 1540 the jurors reported that the priory church had been parochial from time immemorial, other buildings on the 3-acre site being necessary for the farmer and not valued; the possessions included c. 1,000 acres with many messuages, cottages and unmeasured plots, a water-mill, and the rectory, val[ued]. £69 8s. 6d; in 1548 the farmers, the executors of Robert Cowley, deceased, and John Parker, were over £119 in arrears. The property was granted to Thomas Fitz Wiliams in 1578'. Medieval floor tiles were recovered from a grave 37m ENE of the extant 18th century bell-tower come from the site of the levelled Augustinian Priory (Baker 2002, 143). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Dublin recorded that the in the 'parish of Holme-Patricke' on the lands of the 'Lord of Thomond of Bunratty' there stood 'The walles of the parish church' (Simington 1945, 54). Present remains consist of a large irregular-shaped area (Dims. c. 60m sq. ) enclosed by post-1700 stone wall on the SW end of a prominent ridge overlooking Skerries village and the E coast. The graveyard is on three levels, the oldest section is the highest where the 18th-century bell-tower stands on the site of the medieval church (DU005-031001-) and Augustinian Priory (DU005-031----). The graveyard contains three 16th century tombstones (DU005-031003/004/005-) and a single 17th century headstone (DU005-031006-), the majority of the grave markers date from the 18th-20th centuries. Medieval floor tiles were recovered from a grave 37m ENE of the extant 18th century tower (Baker 2002, 143). Possible remnants of the 18th-century church fabric have been incorporated into the upper graveyard wall. Graveyard is still in use. Set in concrete against the external face of the S wall of the 18th century bell-tower, built on the site of the Augustinian Priory (DU005-031----) in Holmpatrick graveyard (DU005-031002-), there is a 16th-century graveslab dedicated to Peter Manne (d. 1520), one of the last priors of the Augustinian Priory of Holmpatrick. The tall slab has a Latin-Cross with expanded terminals carved in relief with a Latin inscription running down the shaft of the cross. The Latin inscription has been translated to English and reads; 'Here lies Peter Mahon [Manne] formerly Prior of the House on whose soul God have mercy. A table tomb in Holmpatrick graveyard (DU005-031002-) dedicated to Elizabeth Finglas, wife of Thomas Hussey of Holmpatrick (d. 1577). Inscription on the 16th-century tomb was recorded by E. R. McC. Dix in May, 1904 as follows; 'The following inscription is copied from a slab hearing the Hussey coat-of-arms, impaling that of the Finglas family. Over the former are the initials T. H., and over the latter E. F. ' The Hussey Arms resemble those of the Barons of Galtrim, viz.' : — "Barry of six, ermine and gules, on a canton of the last a cross or." 'The Finglas Arms are' : — "Per pale, sable and argent, a fleur-de-lys counterchanged." The inscription, Mr. Dix states, has been recut in recent years by a person (judging by the blunders) ignorant of Latin. For instance, the QVE OBIIT now appears as QVF OBMT, &c. 'In the original inscription several of the letters were conjoined. It apparently read ': HIC • IACET • ELIZABETH FINGLAS . QVONDAM VXOR • THOMAE • HVSSEI DE • HOLMPATRICK • GENEROSI QVE • OBIIT XXVII • DIE NOVEMBRIS • A° • 1577 QVIVS • AIE • PPICIETVR • DE' 'The last line means " On whose soul may God have mercy.' The first P has a prolongation of the curved portion slanting downwards, which is a contraction for PRO; and the large commalike object after the DE is also a contraction, and represents US' (McC. Above the name there is an inscribed I H S Christogram with a cross rising from the cross-bar of the H cross with the date 1691 below the name (Fingal Historic Graveyards Project, 2008).
