At the NW corner of a moated site (GA094-003002-), within the grounds of Ardfry House (GA094-004---). This natural spring well (D 2.5m) is enclosed by subrectangular drystone wall (3m N–S; 2.2m E–W), which is just one course high. The well is straight sided and lined with drystone walling. According to Holt (1912, 237), it 'occupies a small bastion-like expansion of the scarp'. A tower house (GA094-003001-) was built on the W scarp of the motte, a few meters to the SE of the holy well. When visited it was obscured with the growth of ivy and ferns, and was covered over with wooden planks. A number of burials were found in its vicinity – see GA094-003004-. This is described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Reg. No. 30409429) as follows: 'Roofless remains of detached two-storey over basement double-pile country house, built c.1780, renovated c.1820, now roofless. Comprising central block having nine bays to front and six bays to rear, having two-bay two-storey towers of c.1820 terminating each end, projecting slightly to front of front pile and having two-bay two-storey bows to front elevations. Further single-bay three-storey block to north-east re-entrant corner. Towers have crenellated parapets with quatrefoils to centre, and decorative carved stone pinnacles to corners. Rendered chimneystacks. Rendered rubble limestone walls with limestone render string course to eaves and moulded render eaves and sill courses to towers. Square-headed chamfered window openings with stone sills. Label-mouldings to windows of four westmost bays of rear elevation, and moulded quatrefoil opening above front entrance. No frames survive. Upper windows to north elevation have moulded heads and upper jambs of medieval limestone work, that to tower having decorative vegetal detailing. Pointed arch door opening with carved limestone doorcase and flaning clustered columns, with ogee detail above having decorative pinnacle, and with moulded lintel to doorway proper. Remains of courtyard to rear, with pseudo-three-centred arched carriage opening with cut-stone voussoirs to north wall. Set outside Oranmore village on a peninsula jutting into Galway Bay.' On the crest of a ridge in grassland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 119, no. 29) as a circular ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. c. 51m) defined by an earthen bank and external fosse with an entrance gap (Wth c. 1.5m) at E. Possible stone-facing was visible on the inner face of the bank. According to local information (Topgr. Files, NUIG), the monument was bulldozed c. 1955. No visible surface trace survives but its outline is clearly visible on aerial photographs (https://binged.it/2dIUTms, last accessed 12 October 2016). At the W end of the low-lying Ardfry peninsula in Galway Bay. An extensive 0.15m thick deposit, mainly of oyster shell with some periwinkle, is revealed in section along N shore of the peninsula and is treaceable for c. 800m at an average depth of c. 0.25m below present ground surface. Some shell is also visible to the W and SE of Loughaunascalia, where it has been exposed by burrowing rabbits, and along the S shoreline to the S of the folly (GA094-002----). Ruinous remains of farmyard, built c.1780, having two-storey outbuildings forming range to north, with range to east end of this running southwards, range to south end of this projecting eastwards. Detached outbuilding to south range of yard. Detached outbuilding to east of yard abutting remains of walled garden. Gables remaining of pitched roofs, hipped corrugated-iron roof to centre range. Rubble limestone walls throughout. Square-headed window openings having stone lintels and sills. Camber-headed carriage arch to outbuilding to north-east and to north elevation of south-east range. Remaining wall of walled garden has remains of elliptical-arched carriage arch with cut-stone voussoirs.
