Underground electrical (20/33kV) and communications cabling connecting the wind turbines and meteorological mast to the proposed on-site substation; v. 2 no. temporary construction compounds (including site offices and welfare facilities (with a combined floor area of 202.5 sqm); vi. A meteorological mast with a height of 30 meters, security fencing and associated foundation and hard-standing area; vii. Upgrade of existing site tracks/ roads and provision of new site access roads, junctions and hardstand areas, including a new site entrance off the L3115; viii. Peat and Spoil Management Areas; ix. Tree felling and vegetation removal; x. Biodiversity enhancement measures (including peatland habitat enhancement, Marsh Fritillary habitat enhancement and management, establishment of hedgerows and native woodland planting); xi. A thirty five-year operational life from the date of full commissioning of the wind turbines and subsequent decommissioning is being sought. On a low hillock in undulating farmland which falls away gently to the S. This tower house was in existence in 1574 when 'Balledavy' castle was in the possession of 'the Abbay [sic] of Athenry' (Nolan 1901, 121). Only a section of the N wall (L 5m; H c. 9m; wall T 1.6m at base; wall T 1.3m above batter) and a short length of the return of the of adjoining E wall (L 1.5m, H 1m) survive. It is constructed of roughly coursed rubble and mortar. Apart from a noticeable base-batter, the only architectural feature is part of a window ope at the frayed W end of the N wall, c. 4m above ground level. A stony ridge probably marks the position of the W wall, suggesting an E-W length of c. 9-10m. This corresponds closely with Lyons' notes on the castle made in early 20th century which recorded its dimensions as 10.05m by 13.7m (Cody 1989, 344-5). The tower house was built in the NE section of a subrectangular grass-covered platform (22m N-S, 18m E-W) that is defined by a scarp (H 1m). A medieval church (GA098-006001-) lies c. 290m to the SW. In gently rolling pastureland. A ‘Castle (in ruins)’ is named on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map among a group of small group of buildings and while it is unclear to which building it refers, it most like was the largest one in the group. It is depicted on the OS 25-inch plan dated 1892 as the remains of a roughly square building (c. 14m N-S; c. 13m E-W), only its E wall and the returns of the N and S walls are shown. It was omitted from the subsequent 25-inch plan dated 1927-8 (Cody 1989, 345-6). According to Cody (ibid.), this was done on the on basis of information provided by a local antiquarian (Matilda Redington) who noted that ‘the ruins were probably those of farmhouse of the Dominican monks at Athenry and not a castle’. Without details of the building it is not possible to verify this and the possibility remains that it could have been a castle. No visible surface traces survives.
