On a prominent rise in grassland. Poorly preserved oval rath (E-W 38m, N-S 25.5m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The bank survives at NW; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. No visible surface trace of the fosse survives at NE. A ringfort (GA016-006----) lies c. 550m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA016-006: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA016-006----. In undulating grassland. Well-preserved circular rath (D 41m) defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank is faced with stone and is best preserved from N to ESE. A well-defined stone-lined entrance (Wth 3.7m) is visible at ESE. Costello's plan (1902b, 110) shows an annexelike feature adjoining the rath at NW, no clear surface trace of which survives. What is visible are a number of radiating earthen banks from W to N. There is a souterrain (GA016-006001-) in NW quadrant of the interior, and a second (GA016-006002-) within the site of the 'annexe' at NNW (GA016-005----) lies c. 550m to NE. (Costello 1903, 4-5; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 488) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA016-006001: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA016-006001-. Within NW quadrant of a ringfort (GA016-006----). A plan of this souterrain drawn up by Costello (1902b, 110) suggests that it was roughly L-shaped in plan and consisted of at least two chambers. Access is now possible to only one. A stone-lined hollow (L 2m) leads to the chamber (L 3.9m, Wth 1.2m) which runs SE-NW. A possible creep is visible at NW end. A 2nd possible chamber is visible beyond this through a gap in the roof lintels; it appears to turn to SW. Another souterrain (GA016-006002-) lies c. 24m to NW. (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 448). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA016-006002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA016-006002-. Some 10m NW of a ringfort (GA016-006----), within an associated 'annexe'. According to Costello (1902b, 110), this souterrain consisted of 'two chambers connected by a narrow doorway without a passage'. Present remains consist of a blocked-up chamber, running E-W, indicated by a slight depression (L 2.6m) in the ground surface. Circa 7m to W, lies a 2nd chamber (L c. 4m), running N-S. Though inaccessible, a view through a displaced lintel indicates that it is of drystone construction and similar to the souterrain (GA016-006001-) within the interior of the ringfort. (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 448). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
