In low-lying marshy grassland c. 80m to the W of a small stream. This well-preserved almost square moated site (50m E-W; 49m N-S) is defined by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The outer bank survives along the W and N sides. There is a causewayed entrance gap (Wth 5m) at S. On inspection in September 1983 the fosse, for the most part, was delimited by trees and bushes and the banks were overgrown from NW to NE. Current OSi aerial imagery indicates that the trees and overgrowth have since been removed. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 2 December 2019 - GA117-017: Enclosure - large enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA117-017----. In level grassland. Poorly preserved roughly D-shaped enclosure (E-W 87m; N-S 70m) defined by a stone-faced earthen bank. An external fosse is visible from SSE through S to W. A series of earth and stone banks radiate from the enclosing element and a number of similar banks lie within the interior. Abutting the monument at SE is a small circular annexe (diam. 20m). Quarrying has encroached upon the monument at NW. According to local information, 'Puntbaun' means a white (cattle) pound; apparently in spring, before the introduction of fertilizers, the field was covered with white daisies. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 14 December 2017 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Cappacur. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Cappacur, about 1 in 10 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
