On a rise in grassland overlooking Lough Corrib to SW. Marked on 1s ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 70m) just S of td. boundary. All that survives is the arc of a collapsed grassed-over stony bank (L c. 20m) at NW, which is overlain by a curving but modern field wall. A church (GA055-027002-) lies within the interior, and Cargin castle (GA055-028----) stands 490m to SSW. Located on a rise in pastureland, within the E half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (GA055-027001-), and overlooking Lough Corrib to the SW. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 182-3), this church 'is believed to have been originally a chapel of ease, and not a parish church'. It consists of a ruinous medieval church (ext. dims. 12.25m E-W; 7.3m N-S; av. wall T 0.8m). When visited by the Survey in June 1984, apart from the S half of the W gable, it was densely overgrown with ivy. Where visible, the walls were built of mortared undressed regular large and small stone blocks. Coursing was evident at the lower levels but became more haphazard towards the centres and then more regular again towards the tops. Only the W gable wall survived intact. The E gable was missing its apex and the N and S side-walls had been reduced in height; the centre of the S wall just survived to a height of 1m. The only architectural features visible were a pointed arch doorway, with an internal hanging eye on its W side, near the W end of the S wall, and a tall single-light window (head missing) and an aumbry in the E gable. While the interior of the church was totally overgrown with trees and briars, some small ivy-covered stones evident towards its centre may have been grave-markers associated with a children’s burial ground (GA055-027003-). The ivy was subsequently removed from the church following a proposed graveyard clean up in 1988 (SMR file) but by 2004 it was heavily overgrown again (Halpin et al. 2004). On inspection then the remains of the E side of the base of a window were visible towards the E end of the S wall and a ‘carved head’ (see GA055-027007-) was noted on the upper SE corner (ibid., 20). Burials in the graveyard (GA055-027005-) immediately surrounding the church date from the early 19th century. A search indicated that it was possibly located within the heavily overgrown interior of the church (GA055-027002-). Towards its centre, three/four small ivy-covered set stones (H <0.2m; Wth 0.16m; T 0.08m), aligned N-S, which could mark children's burials were noted. On inspection by the Galway Survey in July 1984 no visible surface trace of it was noted. According to local information, ‘a tunnel or souterrain’ led from the graveyard (GA055-027005-) to ‘Cargin Castle’ (GA055-028----) c. 490m to the SSW (Halpin et al. 2004, 7). This male exhibitionist figure, first recorded as a ‘carved head’ in 2004 (Halpin et al. 2004, 20), is located on the upper SE corner of a medieval church (GA055-027002-), which occupies the E half of an ecclesiastical enclosure (GA055-027001-). The figure bears a large head with furrowed brow, large eyes, small ears. Its tongue protrudes down over the lower lip of its open mouth. Beneath the head, on the lower part of the stone, two limbs extending back along it, bend at joints and then extend to the outer edge of the stone. The limbs may represent arms or legs and they terminate in rounded hands or feet. A phallus between the limbs extends to the chin on the head where it meets the protruding tongue. There is some damage at this part of the stone as well as to the right hand/foot (information from G. Dempsey and Dr C. Cunniffe received 26 June 2020). On a low knoll near E shore of Lough Corrib. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'William Gaynard' (Nolan 1901b, 118). It comprises a rectangular keep (L 11.1m, Wth 6.6m) with a small rectangular tower at E corner. Though probably of 13th-C date (Leask 1951, 156-7; Killanin and Duignan 1967, 304-5), it was extensively restored in 1970. It is now two storeys in height but Nolan (1901a, 29) mentions the existence of a third. The original doorway, at 1st-floor level towards S end of SW wall, is now reached by a modern flight of stone stairs. There is also a pointed arch doorway in NE wall on ground floor. At present the internal layout comprises a vaulted ground floor and a 'great hall' on 1st floor lit by five all windows. At NW end of the latter is an en-suite bedroom, surmounted by a gallery. An intramural staircase in NW wall connects the ground and 1st floors. Apart from the en-suit bedroom, the reconstruction appears to reflect the original layout, though the upper section of the walls, along with the roof and parapets, are modern work. Waterman (1956, 74-6) states that the vaulting is original but the presence of wickerwork centring may suggest otherwise. The tower in E corner is described by Nolan (ibid.) as a later addition. It now consists of three storeys, and possibly functioned originally as a garderobe. Most of the windows appear to have been altered. A church (GA055-027002-) lies 490m to NNE and there is an island cashel (GA055-042----) 450m to SW.
