On a NW-facing slope in grassland overlooking bogland to NW. Subcircular rath (NE-SW 94m ext.), in fair condition, defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. A field boundary cuts across the monument at NE and S, to E of which no visible surface trace survives. The inner bank is present at W; elsewhere a scarp (quarried out at WSW and N) forms the enclosing element. A field wall overlies the outer bank from S to W. A gap at W appears modern. There is a probable souterrain (GA004-009001-) within the interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In SW quadrant of a ringfort (GA004-009----). According to local tradition, there is a 'cave' here: the landowner remembered people going down into it but could not describe it himself. A pile of rubble now marks its position. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. On the summit of a knoll in hilly grassland overlooking bogland to N. A subrectangular unenclosed area (n-S 19m, E-W 14m) delimited by a field wall at E. Numerous small set stones are visible, indicating graves oriented E-W. At S, a number of large slabs placed around a bush form a small altar area. According to local information, adult human bones 'about six feet-tall' were discovered whilst digging nearby. An ecclesiastical building (GA004-014----) lies 80m to E and the site of a market place (GA004-013----) c. 125m to ESE. Close to S bank of the Dalgin River in an extensive tract of bogland. In the course of deep ploughing the bog during land reclamation, a local farmer came across what he described as a roadway (Wth 2.5m) paved with thin sandstone slabs. This lay c. 0.3m below the surface of the bog but at least 1m of the bog had already been removed. Uncovered at various points over a distance of 200-300m, it followed a roughly E-W axis. A horizontal watermill (GA004-016----) lies c. 100m to ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
