This tower house is sited on a low partially natural platform on the W bank of the River Clare: the original river flowed c. 10m to its E but a subsequent channel now flows c. 70m to the E of it. According to the Annals of the Four Masters, it was built in 1451 by Lord Clanrickarde (Nolan 1901a, 26-7) and it was in the possession of 'Richard Burke' in 1585 (ibid. 1901b, 118). On inspection in November 1983, it comprised a rectangular four-storey tower (L 11.8m, Wth 10.4m) constructed of coursed well-dressed stone with a gently base-batter. The pointed arch doorway, set off-centre in the NE wall, opened into a small lobby with a murder-hold overhead. The presence of opposing vertical slots in the side-walls directly inside the door, indicated that it was also defended by a portcullis. An intramural stairs to the E lead to the 1st floor from where the spiral stairs rose in the E angle. There were stone vaults between ground/1st and 2nd/3rd floors. Intramural passages were evident in the SE wall on the 1st floor and in the SW wall on the 2nd floor; the former lead to a garderobe in the SW wall. A mural chamber was visible in the NE wall on the 2nd floor and a fireplace survived in the NW wall. Only the central section of the SW wall on the 3rd floor survived. Corbels centrally placed on top it formerly supported a machiolation. Apart from simple slits, all the windows had been robbed out (SMR file). In January 2009, following a reported lightning strike, some masonry from various sections of the SW wall fell to the ground. The tower stands at the S corner of a roughly subrectangular earthen platform (E-W 41m, N-S 38m) defined by a stony scarp (H 1.4m): traces of a wall foundation are visible on its crest along the SE side. On 1st ed. of the OS 6-inch map, an artificial-looking side channel of the river skirts the W and N sides of the platform before rejoining the main channel to the N. An 'Old Br.' is indicated across the channel at NW but no visible surface trace of it survives. These features may be part of the 'causeway and drawbridge' referred to by Nolan (1901a, 27). Within the interior of the platform, a rectangular area (NW-SE 18.5m, NE-SW 12.5m) defined by a low bank adjoins the tower on its NW side, and aerial reconnaissance (CUCAP BDN 77) shows a possible rectangular house foundation in the E corner. Spanning the River Clare at Corrofin (see GA057-146----). It comprises a mortared limestone bridge (E-W; L 132m, Wth 5.45m) of twelve arches, built in two phases and still in use. The 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map shows a bridge of twelve or thirteen arches flanked by cutwaters. The surviving fabric of this bridge, possibly of 17th-C date, is indicated by the ten westernmost round-headed arches, the seventh of which, being the largest, probably marks the centre of the pre-drainage river channel. These arches are flanked by nine cutwaters, with corresponding refuges in the parapet walls above, on N or upstream side but S side is plain, indicating that the bridge has been widened. This work is probably coeval with its extension to E which is commemorated by a stone plaque: 'Corofin Bridge Drainage Commission 1848'. The new channel flows through the twelfth arch. This bridge probably replaced an earlier crossing point (see GA057-161----) a short distance downstream. On W bank of the River Clare a short distance S of Corrofin Castle (GA057-089----). Aerial reconnaissance in July 1970 (CUCAP BDN 77) showed a section of an old roadway (L c. 60m) immediately SW of the building marked 'Corofin Lodge' on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1933). This comprised a slightly raised linear earthwork defined by two low parallel banks. It followed a NE-SW axis but appeared to turn W at its SW end, where its line could be traced for a further c. 100m as a faint ridge and cropmark. At its NE end, its NE-SW axis is continued by a field boundary for a further c. 75m. Its presence suggests that there was an older crossing point c. 100m downstream from the present bridge (GA057-091----), probably at the point where 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map shows a weir. During monitoring ahead of the construction of sixteen dwellings at Castlegrounds, Corrofin, Co. Galway, human remains, comprising at least eight skeletons, were recorded. As a result, it was decided that, due to the advanced stage of the development, the remains should be fully excavated. This was carried out in July and August 2004. Considerable amounts of human bone were recovered from the topsoil. Excavation revealed a minimum of 57 skeletons in varying states of preservation. Those near the surface had been truncated, probably by agricultural activity, and most survived only partially. They were laid supine, almost all orientated east-west, with no grave goods, shrouding or coffins. Grave-cuts, where discernible, were tight to the skeletons. Grave fills were for the most part similar to the topsoil, with patches of redeposited natural and some charcoal. A curving ditch defined the edge of the burials to the east. This was 2m wide at the surface and over 1m deep, containing two fills. It is thought that the association of the graveyard and a substantial enclosing feature is suggestive of an Early Christian burial ground. Osteological analysis of the skeletons is currently in progress and it is hoped that this and radiocarbon dating will shed further light on the date and origin of this graveyard (Rogers 2007, 164-5, no. 679). - Corrofin Bridge, bridge, 1650–1850, Regional interest, registry number 30405702, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=GA&regno=30405702. Twelve or thirteen-arch road bridge, over River Clare. Ten western round arches are of probable seventeenth-century date, seventh arch being over original channel of river, and twelfth segmental arch is dated 1848. North elevation of western arches flanked by cutwaters with pedestrian refuges above. Bridge widened to south side, possibly during drainage works of 1848. Segmental arch to river has draughted and pecked limestone voussoirs to arch rings, coursed hammer-finished ashlar limestone to spandrels and parapets, dressed hammer-finished limestone copings with modern decorative metal lantern brackets and square-edged string course to parapet. Plaque to inner face of north parapet reads 'Corofin Bridge Drainage Commission 1848' and also bears crow's foot benchmark. Random rubble limestone walls to adjacent fields with stile and stone steps to east. Tarmacadamed carriageway.

A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
