In low-lying pastureland overlooking a large marsh immediately to the S. This multiperiod church is part of the important early monastic site associated with St Sorney at Drumacoo (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 34). Now a National Monument, it consists of a rectangular ruined building in which three phases of construction are evident (Leask 1960, 73-6). The earliest phase consisted of a small rectangular church (E-W; L 8.8m; Wth 5.7m ext.), the 'semi-cyclopean' masonry of which is still visible in the W and N walls of the present church. The only surviving architectural feature of this phase is the trabeate doorway now standing off-centre in the W wall. In the second phase, dating to c. 1235 (ibid., 74), the church was greatly expanded (L 20.45m; Wth c. 8.55m) and the doorway was changed to the S wall. This and the two fine single-light E windows, which were flanked to the N and S by a pair of pointed aumbries, are fine examples of Transitional-style architecture. There is also a window in the N wall but it was subsequently blocked up. In the third phase, the S wall was rebuilt inside the line of the S wall of the secondary phase, thus narrowing the whole church (Wth 7.2m). The doorway was re-inserted into this wall (ibid.). There are two single-light windows to its E. During the course of the reconstruction of this wall, the S aumbry of the S pair was blocked up as was the S window in the E gable. A roughly quadrangular graveyard (GA103-118003-) surrounds the church. In 1830 a large mausoleum (GA103-118004-) for the St George family was built within it, directly outside the E end of the N wall of the church. A small section of the graveyard to its W was also enclosed for the burial of members of the family (ibid., 73). Features associated with St Sorney include a 'Bed' (GA103-118006-) which lay c. 15m to the S of the church, within the graveyard and close to its S boundary wall, a holy well (GA103-118005-) c. 35m to the SW and a 'Bush' (GA103-118002-) c. 125m to the ENE. A cross-slab (GA103-118012-) was recovered from the graveyard and there is a bullaun stone (GA103-118007-) c. 100m to the NE. Fragments of another cross (GA103-118008-) and a possible associated leacht (GA103-118013-) lie c. 165m to the ESE. There are also documentary references to a 'guest-house' and a 'leper-house' (GA103-118014-) here in the 13th century (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 349). Associated with the church (GA103-118001-) which is part of an important early monastic site at Drumacoo (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 34). This roughly quadrangular graveyard (c. 60m E-W; c. 50m N-S) is enclosed by a drystone wall. Access is gained at the S end of the E wall. Graveslabs date from the 17th century onwards. A section of the graveyard, to the W of the 19th-century mausoleum (GA103-118004-) that was built against the E end of the N wall of the church, was enclosed for the burial of members of the St George family (Leask 1960, 73). Extending to the N from the E end of the church (GA103-118001-), this large mausoleum was built in 1830 for Lady Harriet St George and her husband Arthur F. Some 35m to the SW of the church (GA103-118001-) at Drumacoo. Dedicated to St Sorney, this holy well consists of a roughly circular stone-lined sunken spring well (diam. 1.7m), surrounded by a circular stone wall (diam. c. 4m). Access is via seven steps at N. Modern votive offerings are visible and there is a local tradition of a pattern, performed on two consecutive Mondays and the intervening Thursday, at which cures for injuries, bleeding and minor disabilities are sought. Higgins (1987, vol. II, 271, No. 3) recorded a cross-inscribed water-rolled limestone pebble here. Circa 15m to the S of the doorway of the church (GA103-118001-) at the monastic complex at Drumacoo. Described by Fahey (1893, 33) as resembling 'one of those stone cells in which many of our early Saints loved to do penance. It measures about 6 feet [1.83m] in length by 4 [1.22m] in width externally’. Its height could not be determined ‘owing to the quantity of rubbish and earth which have accumulated around it’. Its stone roof was still ‘near perfect'. When visited in 1982 the monument was completely ivy-covered and consisted of a rectangular mass of stone (L 2.6m; Wth 2m; H 1.7m) aligned N-S. Circa 100m to the NE of the church (GA103-118001-) at the monastic complex in Drumacoo, this bullaun stone is incorporated into the delimiting edge of a former roadway (GA103-118010-) that originally provided access to the church (information from Dr C. Cunniffe, 2011). It consists of a limestone boulder (L 1m; H 0.3m) that is roughly triangular in plan and varies in width from 0.65m at the W end to 0.5m at the E end. It is 0.35m high. On the NW slope of a possible cairn (GA103-118011-), c. 165m to the ESE of the monastic complex at Drumacoo. The base and two pieces of the shaft of this cross survive. The base is square in plan (L/Wth 0.5m; H c. 0.4m) and is located in the W corner of an almost square setting (L/Wth c. 2.45m) of large stone blocks, a possible associated leacht (GA103-118013-). It consists of two horizontal slabs set one on top of the other; the edges of the upper slab are chamfered. One fragment of the shaft (H 0.5m) is slotted into the base and the other (L 0.55m) is lying on the ground to the NE. The shaft fragments are octagonal in section (diam 0.2m) and indicate that the cross that was at least 1.5m in height. Indicated and named ‘Drumacoo (in Ruins)’ only on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (1933). Depicted as a series of some 27 unroofed rectangular structures and associated subrectangular plots surrounding the church (GA103-118001) and graveyard (GA103-118003-) from W through N to SE. McCaffrey (1952, 80-81, 193, fig. 9a) presents a detailed plan showing these subdivisions and structures, since levelled, most of which are probably house foundations aligned roughly E-W. Aerial reconnaissance (CUCAP AJU 19, AVN 24) in 1968 revealed that only those to E and SE of the graveyard survived. Traces of these are still visible. Possibly post-AD 1800 in date. McCaffrey (1952, 81, no. 38, Fig. 9a, 193) presented a detailed plan indicating the line of a possible irregularly shaped ecclesiastical enclosure (290m ENE-WSW; 125m N-S) at the 'Monastic site' at Drumacoo. A gap at NNW may have been the original entrance. However, the 1933 edition of the OS 6-inch map indicates that the suggested line of the enclosure is, in fact, two/three roadways, which may have formerly accessed the site. The N roadway curves from roughly NW to E with a splayed gap at NNW. Only slight traces are now visible at ground level of the section running from NE to E. From NE to ENE it is defined by a slight indentation (Wth 5m; D 0.1m) and from ENE to E by the foundation lines of a wall (Wth 1.6m-1.8m; H 0.5m). Aerial reconnaissance in 1964 (CUCAP AJU 19) revealed the section from N to NE as a cropmark; otherwise no visible surface trace survives. The second road/trackway is shown on both the 1838 and 1933 map editions, extending off the previous one at ENE and curving towards the S and to the W of the church (GA103-118001-). It may also have accessed the holy well (GA103-118005-). A short section of it (L 23m; Wth 4m), running NE-SW, is visible c. 92m to the E of the church, where it is delimited by two lines of irregularly placed large limestone boulders. A bullaun stone (GA103-118007-) is visible on the S line close to the NNW-SSE running field boundary that cuts it. At its NE end it changes direction sharply and runs NW-SE. On a gentle SE-facing slope, c. 165m to the ESE of the church (GA103-118001-) at the monastic complex at Drumacoo. This poorly preserved subcircular cairn (13.5m NW-SE; 12.5m N-S; H < 2m) is defined by grassed-over stones. Field-clearance rubble has been dumped on its S half. A curving drystone wall surrounds the monument from SW to W. A cross-base and fragments of its shaft (see GA103-118008-), and a possible leacht (GA103-118013-) are visible at NW. This cross-slab was found in the graveyard (GA103-118003-) surrounding the church (GA103-118001-) at the monastic complex at Drumacoo. It comprises a subrectangular limestone slab (H 0.55m; Wth 0.37m; T 0.13m) that bears a grooved single-line Latin cross on one face. The head and arms end in T-shaped terminals and the base is subrectangular in plan (Higgins 1987, vol. II, 286, no. 17). On the NW slope of a possible cairn (GA103-118011-); this possible leacht, almost square in plan (2.5m NE-SW; 2.4m NW-SE) is defined by large rectangular blocks (L 0.7m; Wth 0.3m; T 0.15m) and some smaller stones. It is three courses high on the SE side, two on the SW and NE sides and just one course high on the NW side. A hawthorn tree standing close to the N corner overhangs the structure. - Drumacoo, mausoleum, 1825–1835, Regional interest, registry number 30410340, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=GA&regno=30410340. Gothic Revival single-cell mausoleum, dated 1830, incorporated into ruins of medieval Drumacoo Church (built c.1250). Presents mainly blank front (east) wall. Recent pitched slate roof at lower level than previous roof, having crenellations and pinnacles. Tooled cut-stone walls with tooled stone pilaster buttresses. Moulded limestone date plaque over entrance. Pointed arch window opening to west gable having tooled stone surround and cast-iron Y-tracery. Pointed-arch door opening having carved chamfered stone surround with colonettes continuing to moulding to archivolt, carved lintel, sheet metal door and tympanum with arcaded panels to door and Y-tracery to tympanum. Set within graveyard and bounded by stone walls.
