On a hillock. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a kidney-shaped enclosure but on 3rd ed. (1931) as a circular enclosure (D c. 30m). What survives is a grassed-over stony area (E-W c. 30m, N-S c. 25m) defined on E, S and W sides by steep inclines. Traces of a possible fosse were noted from SE to SW in 1963 (OPW Topgr. Files) but it appears to have been subsequently backfilled. A CBG (GA071-041001-) occupies E half of the monument. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA071-041001: Children's burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA071-041001-. In E half of an enclosure (GA071-041----). It comprises an area (E-W 12m) of small undressed irregular stones aligned in rows, c. 0.8m apart, indicating graves oriented E-W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA071-042: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA071-042----. On a natural rise, it is surrounded by an extensive field system (GA071-043----). In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Donell O Kelley' (Nolan 1901b, 122). All that survives are part of W and N walls (L c. 10m, Wth 5.3m), and the largely grassed-over foundations of E and S walls. These indicate a structure of at least three storeys with a stone vault between 1st/2nd floors. No definite trace of the original doorway survives unless it was situated in N wall where the remains of a slight projection are visible. Some evidence for alteration/repair to the fabric exists, including the insertion of a carved stone plaque bearing a coat of arms in the external face of W wall. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Surrounding Killaclogher Castle (GA071-042----). An extensive series of small rectangular/square fields defined by flat-topped grassed-over earthen banks cover an area c. 450m N-S by c. 450m E-W. Modern field boundaries follow a similar alignment but do not overlie the earlier field banks. A large enclosure (GA071-002----), c. 150m to NW, may be associated. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
