At the S end of a low hill overlooking a small stream and turlough to the S. This medieval nave and chancel church (19.4m E-W; 4.5m N-S) is very poorly preserved and densely overgrown with ivy. It stands at NW edge of an irregularly shaped graveyard (GA104-151003-). A survey by Chappel (2001, 6-11) indicates that number of phases of construction are discernible and that the earliest part of the church appears to be the E gable, which dates to the late 12th/early 13th century. Its lower courses, which are battered, bear an in-situ dressed stone with diagonal tooling in the external wall face and an aumbry at the S end of the internal face that is similarly dressed. The church appears to have been remodelled and extended to the W in the late 15th/early 16th century when the majority of this gable was demolished and rebuilt. During this phase a number of dressed stones bearing diagonal tooling were reused in the wall fabric and the squat two-light ogee-headed window was inserted. Based on its construction and the form of the ogee-headed doorway and the two narrow single-light windows in the S wall, which are of 15th/16th century date, it appears that this wall is contemporary with the remodelling of the E gable. However, as would be expected, these walls are not bonded into each other. The W end of the S wall appears to have subsequently become unstable as a buttress was built against it. A double water stoup is visible on the W side of the doorway. The dressing on a quoin stone in the W gable, which stands to its full height, suggests that it dates from the late 16th/early 17th century. A number of dressed stones dating to the two earlier phases of construction were reused in its fabric. High up in the gable there is a single-light pointed window. Most of the N wall stood to its original height until 1988 when its upper five or six courses were demolished; the resulting rubble is in the adjoining field to the N (SMR file). The OS Letters (O’Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 183) indicate that the W end of this wall had been pulled down and rebuilt. Apart from an offset near its E end no architectural features survive and so it is difficult to date this wall. Chappel (ibid., 10) suggests it may be of late 15th/early 16th century date and may also be of two phases of construction. The interior of the church is filled with graves dating from the late medieval period (see GA104-151005- to GA104-151009-) to the 20th century. A number of architectural fragments from the church have been reused as grave-markers in the graveyard. There is a souterrain (GA104-151002-) c. 30m to the W and a house (GA104-151004-) is also associated. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 4 March 2020 - GA104-151002: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA104-151002-. On a low hill, c. 25m to the W of 'Killora Church' (GA151001-). When initially visited by the Survey in December 1982, this souterrain was inaccessible. However, one roof lintel and traces of the side-walls were visible. On a revisit in 1992, no visible surface trace was evident. Associated with a medieval church (GA104-151001-) which stands in its SW end, this irregularly shaped graveyard (c. 70m NE-SW; c. 60m ENE-WSW) is delimited by a drystone wall constructed of rough limestone blocks. It slopes steeply to the S. Access is gained at SE. A survey of all the headstones, which date from the 18th to the 20th centuries and include a number of broad tombstones bearing occupational symbols, as well as a number of late medieval graveslabs within the church (see GA104-151005- to GA104-151009-) were recorded by Chapple (1995). This is one of five 16th/17th century recumbent graveslabs that lie within the church (GA104-151001-). This slab (1.78m L; 0.54m tapering to 0.45m at base) has been described by Chapple (1995, 18, no. 15) as ‘decorated with an incised ringed cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The external edge of the ring breaks at where the head and arms should be, but are uncut. . . . To the left of the shaft is an incised hammer, while to the right there is an incised tongs and horse-shoe. The areas within the horseshoe and between the mouth and handles of the tongs are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. Below the stepped base is a further carving of a tongs/pincers and a hammer. All of these would appear to be the vocational symbols of a blacksmith- The edge of the stone bears a double lined, incised border. It is believed that this stone may be of a blacksmith who lived in the Townland of Carrigeen (pers. comm. Mr. C. Potter, Craughwell).’ The carving on this slab is comparable in style to those beside it to the N (GA104-151006-; GA104-151007-) and, although undated, is of a type that is found in 16th/17th century burial contexts. This is one of five 16th/17th century recumbent graveslabs that lie within the church (GA104-151001-). This slab (1.86m by 0.63 tapering to 0.50m at the base) bears the following inscription along the top: DONEL O HILANE. It is described by Chapple (1995, 18, no. 16) as bearing ‘a large, incised, ringed, cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The external edge of the ring breaks at where the head and arms should be, but are uncut. The stone bears a border of two parallel, incised lines. The words of the inscription are spaced by relatively large, incised dots. The text appears to be inexpertly carved, as the letters vary in size, and in many cases are incorrectly shaped.’ The carving on this slab is comparable in style to those beside it to the N and S (GA104-151005-; GA104-151007-) and, although undated, is of a type that is found in 16th/17th century burial contexts. This is one of five 16th/17th century recumbent graveslabs that lie within the church (GA104-151001-). This slab (L 2.18m by 0.70m) bears the following inscription at the W end: PRAY FOR THE / SOVLE OF / M. HILLANE. It is described by Chapple (1995, 18-19, no. 17) as bearing on the E portion ‘an inverted, incised, ringed, cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The stone bears a border of two parallel, incised lines. The words of the inscription are spaced by false relief lozenge shapes. The first and second lines of the text are separated by a narrow horizontal panel from which the first line of text springs, and is slightly encroached upon by the height of the 'O' in the word 'OF' in the second line. The second and third lines of text have no such dividing panel, and thus some of the letters touch each other, most notably the letters 'M' and 'H' in the third line abutting the letters above them. Some of the letters of the text are ligatured, namely: in the first line of the text the letters 'HE'; in the third line of the text the letters 'NE'.’ The carving on this slab is comparable in style to those beside it to the S (GA104-151005-; GA104-151006-) and, although undated, is of a type that is found in 16th/17th century burial contexts. This is one of five 16th/17th century recumbent graveslabs that lie within the church (GA104-151001-). This broken slab (L 0.91m by 0.58m Wth) is lying loose and comprises a panel of latticework below which are two smaller panels bearing the date 1619 (left) and IHS surmounted by the date 1619 (right). It is described by Chapple (1995, 19, no. 18) as follows: ‘The whole of the upper portion of the stone is carved with a relatively loose, false relief latticework based on the intersection of lozenge, saltire cross, and Greek cross shapes. The four sides of the panel where these features intersect are marked by semi-circles, with a central circle. Each of the corners also bears a quadrant circle. A small false relief cross with expanded terminals springing from the cross-bar of the “H" of the 'IHS' monogram. The upper left corner is broken, removing the majority of the quadrant-circle from this portion. Some aspects of the carving give the impression that the stone was left unfinished. These include a number of the triangular sections between the intersections of the circular portions and the straight bands are left uncarved. The outlines of some being only lightly incised. Further, the '6' in the upper version of the date '1619' is also unfinished. However, it is likely that this was originally painted, thus the outlines of the design were all that was necessary. Lying nearby is what appears to have been the lower portion of this stone. It is uninscribed and undecorated, and measures 1.14m long (max.) x 0.58m wide, giving a stone that would have originally measured c. 1.83m long.’ The carving on this slab is comparable in style to late 16th and earlier 17th century examples. This is one of five 16th/17th century recumbent graveslabs that lie within the church (GA104-151001-). This slab (L 1.92m by 0.7m) lies adjacent to the S wall immediately inside the doorway. It is described by Chapple (1995, 14, no. 6) as bearing ‘a large, incised, ringed, cross calvary. The panels formed by the intersection of the arms and the ring are incised, giving the impression of a false relief decoration. The stone bears a border of two parallel, incised lines. The carving on this slab is comparable in style to three others in the church (GA104-151005-; GA104-151006-; GA104-151007-) and, although undated, is of a type that is found in 16th/17th century burial contexts.
