Situated in gently undulating pastureland. Described in OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 533) as 'an old castle … of whose history nothing is known'. No visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA074-069001: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA074-069001-. On a low hummock in grassland. Marked and named only on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map. All that is visible are the grassed-over foundations of a poorly preserved rectangular building (E-W; L 7m, Wth 4m), probably a small chapel or oratroy. A gap (Wth 1.55m) in S wall may indicated a doorway. Collapsed stone from the church has been reused as grave-markers in the graveyard which lies immediately to S. The latter is unenclosed save for traces of wall-footings which form a right angle along its SE limits; possibly a CBG (GA074-069002-). Very slight remains of an earthen bank (see GA074-069003-) are also visible 48m to N of the church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In low-lying pastureland. This possible ecclesiastical enclosure is clearly visible on aerial photographs (see https://binged.it/2gnEqYe last accessed 30 August 2017). It is roughly subcircular in plan (c. 99m NNE-SSW; c. 92m E-W) and a N-S running field boundary cuts through its E limits. When the associated church (GA074-069001-) and children's burial ground (GA074-069002-) within its interior were inspected in March 1985, only tentatives traces of it were noted. A very poorly preserved earthen bank was noted c. 46m to the N of the church. It was very degraded and reached a maximum height of 0.2m. It was not possible to determine its width as its limits were impossible to determine accurately from the ground. On the aerial photograph the entire outline of the enclosure is visible. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
