On a slight rise in pastureland, to SW of Newcastle village. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Conogher OKelly' (Nolan 1901b, 122). No visible surface trace survives; the immediate area has been greatly disturbed by quarrying which probably resulted in the destruction of the castle. (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 256) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA071-082: Burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA071-082----. On a low glacial rise, c. 100m NE of 'Templemoyle Church' (GA084-127002-) and c. 240m SE of 'Templebally' (GA071-082003-). During the extraction of sand and gravel from a sandpit, burials have been recurrently found at various intervals since 1952. They have been variously reported as being only c. 0.4-0.6m below ground surface and aligned E-W (Topgr. Files, NMI) In 1979, a graveslab (GA051-082005-) bearing the inscription 'OROIT AR MAELPOIL' and a large bronze-coated iron hand-bell of 7th-9th-C date were discovered at the site, indicating that the burial ground was probably associated with the adjoining churches (pers. comm. Prof. Rynne). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Revised by: Paul Walsh Date of revision: 1 December 2011 - GA084-127001: Ecclesiastical enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA084-127001-. On the summit of a low rise overlooking a large bog to SW. It consists of a subcircular enclosure, possibly multivallate, surrounding church (GA084-127002-). The line of the outer enclosure (WNW-ESE 280m) is indicated on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1933) by field and td. boundaries curving from SE through S to WNW. Aerial reconnaissance in July 1971 (CUCAP BGI 35) shows a possible earthen bank along the line of this enclosure from SW to W. The aerial photograph also revealed the presence of a middle enclosure (ENE-WSW c. 150m), represented by an earthen scarp curving from E through S to SW. A number of subdivisions and a series of cultivation ridges are visible internally, particularly in the area immediately S of the modern graveyard. The latter has a notably curved SE boundary wall, possibly representing the line of a third inner enclosure immediately around the church. The church itself appears to be roughly centrally placed within both it and the middle enclosure. A holy well (GA087-127004-) lies 80m to SSW of the church, in S part of the outer enclosure, and a burial ground (GA071-082----) c. 100m to NE, just outside it. Another church (GA071-082003-) stands 265m to N. This monument also extends on to OS sheet 71 (GA071-082004-). Within an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA084-127001-). All that survives is a section of S wall (L 11.25m) of an apparently rectangular church, aligned E-W. The only architectural features are two single-light round-headed windows, probably of 13th-C date (pers. comm. Prof. Rynne). At the time of OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 257-9), a substantial section of N wall (L 13.25m) and E gable were also intact, the latter containing 'two lancet windows of cut stone', described as being 'of the same kind' as the surving windows. (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 275; Nicholls 1973, 36) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Some 80m SSW of a church (GA084-127002-), in S sector of an early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA084-127001-). It consists of a roughly circular water-filled hollow (D c.2m) delimited by traces of a collapsed drystone wall. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
