In low-lying marshy farmland, c.130m SE of a stream. Named ‘Toberadoney’ in Gothic script on the 1838 and 1933 editions of the OS 6-inch map, meaning ‘Sunday well’ (O’Flanagan 1927, vol. 1, 484). On inspection, this natural spring well (D 1.1m) was enclosed by a low oval-shaped drystone wall (1.9m E-W; 0.9m N-S; H 0.2m) constructed of two courses of irregular limestone blocks covered with grass and moss. An underground stream flowing to the W appeared to emerge from the well. No votive offerings were visible. In pastureland and roughly centrally located on the W side of Kilreekill village. Named 'Old Chapel' on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map and indicated as a roofed building aligned roughly E-W. It stood immediately to the S of a later 'R.C. Chapel' (GA098-137003-). On the 1933 edition of the map it is named 'Chapel (in Rns.) and only a short section of it S side-wall is depicted. It was separated from the later church by the boundary wall of the associated graveyard (GA098-137002-). It was dedicated to St Richella, possibly a sister of St Patrick or St Finnian (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 395). According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 1, 482-3) the only surviving remnant of it that survived in 1838 was a wall (L c. 10m) 'apparently modern' in which there was 'a pointed archway constructed of rude stones and lime and sand mortar.' The arch was 'nearly 9 [c. 2.7m] feet high and 7 [2.1m] feet broad at the ground'. No visible surface trace of it survives. A number of graves now occupy this area of the graveyard. According to local information, the wall was knocked down years ago and the stone from it was used as building material. The following description is from www.buildingsofireland.ie/buildings-search/building/30409807/saint-marys-church-wallscourt-co-galway last accessed 8 April 2020. Freestanding gable-fronted T-plan Roman Catholic church, dated 1839, facing east having two-bay nave, single-bay transepts, canted apse to west elevation, and two-bay sacristy to west elevation of north transept. Pitched slate roofs, hipped to apse, with metal cross finials to transept gables, cut and carved limestone gabled bellcote to gable-front with cut limestone cross finial. Painted wetdashed rendered walls with smooth render plinth course and bands to quoins. Round-headed window openings to nave and transepts, pointed arch window flanked by circular windows to apse, segmental-headed windows to sacristy, all with painted rendered reveals and leaded windows. Pointed arch door main entrance, with chamfered cut and tooled limestone surround, limestone threshold and timber battened double leaf doors. Later timber gallery, carved marble altar furniture and leaded coloured glass windows to interior. Decorative plasterwork to ceiling of apse. Open scissors timber truss roof. Graveyard to south of site. Steel gates and railings with moulded concrete block plinth wall. The simple forms of this church are combined to form a pleasing whole. The cut limestone bellcote and door surround are evidently the work of skilled craftsmen. It is situated adjacent to the road, visible from both sides, creating a notable landmark in the village of Kilreekil. The decorative plasterwork to the ceiling of the apse and the coloured leaded windows add interest and enliven the interior. The church is contextualised by the graveyard to the south.
