In level pasture in the Roughty River valley, 7km NE of Kenmare town. There are historical sources for silver-lead mining in this area in the 17th century (Cowman 1990, 197). Historical records also confirm 18th-century lead mining and 19th-century copper mining here (Cowman 1990, 198-206). The possibility of early copper mining is also suggested by an 18th-century reference to a large 'Danish Mine' (Lansdowne 1937, 12). The only surviving structures date to the 19th century. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In pasture within Ardtully Demesne and c. 60m SW of Fussa Bridge. Listed by Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 398) as an early monastic site, which probably ceased to exist before the 11th century. The only possible evident trace of the monastic site is a curving depression (Wth at top 5.2m, Wth at base 1.2m; D 0.3m) N-ESE, possibly the remains of a fosse. This feature is situated c. 75m NE of the NE corner of Ardtully House. According to Smith (1756, 46), stones from this site were used in the building of Ardtully Castle (KE094-002002-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In level pasture, just W of the confluence of the Owbeg and Roughty Rivers. In the 17th century, Colonel Donough MacFineen forfeited Ardtully and the castle here was later destroyed by Cromwellian forces (Orpen 1930, 149). Parts of this structure may be the four circular towers (KE094-002003-) depicted on the 1846 OS 6-inch map surrounding Ardtully House; there are now no visible remains of these towers. The site is now occupied by the ruin of a Baronial house built by Sir Richard Orpen in 1847 in place of the earlier house and burnt in 1921 (Bence-Jones 1978, 12; Bary 1994, 15). There is a tradition that stones from a nearby monastery (KE094-002001-) were used in the building of the castle (ITA). This castle may be on or near the site of a 'castle' which was built by Carew in 'Ardtuillighe' in 1215 (Ann. Inisf.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In level pasture within Ardtully Demesne, just W of the confluence of the Owbeg and Roughty Rivers. Two towers are indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map immediately W and c. 10m to the NE of Ardtully House, respectively. A further two towers are indicated and named 'Ruins of Towers' on the 1846 OS 6-inch map, on the riverbank c. 45m to the SSE and c. 45m S of the house, respectively; the two westernmost towers appear to be connected by a wall running NW-SE. The towers are not visible at ground level. See KE094-002002-. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. On an elevated level site c. 60m to the N of the Roughty River. The ruins of a mid-19th century two-storey house; roughly square in plan (c. 21m N-S; c. 20m E-W) with a projecting three-storey crenellated tower at the SE corner. The entrance front (S-facing) is of four bays; the entrance is via a one-storey gabled porch with sidelights. There are large rectangular window opes throughout. The house, built by Sir Richard Orpen in 1847, replaced an earlier house also associated with the Orpen family (Bary 1994, 15); the 1846 OS 6-inch map depicts this earlier house as an L-shaped structure with two parallel ranges of buildings to the rear. The present house was burnt in 1921 (Bence-Jones 1978, 12). Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork.
