Internal diam. 25.5m. This sub-circular univallate rath KE045-053---- with souterrain KE045-053001- is located on fairly level pasture land, c. 20m N of a small, E-W flowing tributary of the Owenascaul river. A 2nd rath is located about 150m to S within the same field. The external fosse shown on the 2nd edition of the OS map has been completely filled in, and the outer face of the bank has been scarped in a number of places. The earthen enclosing bank is a maximum of 1.7m high and its inner face is revetted with drystone masonry. The latter survives well at only a few points, but the presence of stone collapse indicates that it was probably originally continuous. The entrance faces NE and is 3m wide. The gap at NW is probably secondary. There is no visible trace of the clochaun previously noted in the interior (Ashe 1954, 21). Souterrain: This was discovered in 1979 when a mechanical excavator was used to excavate a hole in the W part of the interior. It was inspected shortly afterwards by Kelly (1982-3, 7-11) and its condition has changed little since then. The surviving structure is roughly L-shaped in plan and consists of 2 rectangular chambers linked by a short creepway. Chamber 1 was extensively damaged by the mechanical excavator and consists now of a large rectangular hole aligned SW-NE. A portion of the drystone-built SW wall survives to a height of 1m. A porthole slab in the NW wall, near its SW end, provides access to the creepway which leads to chamber 2. The porthole is roughly rectangular and is .45m wide x .58m high. The drystone-built creepway is roofed by a single slab and measures .8m in length, .75m in width and .72m in height. Chamber 2 is aligned NW-SE and measures 3.22m in length, 1.37m in width and 1.55m in height. The upper courses of the drystone-built walls are slightly corbelled, and the chamber is roofed by 4 large slabs. Two drains lead away from the base of the NW wall. A fragment of a millstone which had formerly been built into the wall of chamber 1 was recovered from the bulldozed rubble (Kelly, 11). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 305. Internal diam. 28m. A circular univallate rath situated on a gentle NW facing slope about 150m to SSW of KE045-053----. Much of the interior is occupied by a plantation of coniferous trees, and the earthen enclosing bank is poorly preserved. Much of the W half of the enclosure is defined by a scarp which rises up to 2.1m to the interior from the external ground level. The bank around the E half of the site is .5 to 1.4m high internally and c. 1.2m high externally. The 3m wide entrance gap at ESE is confused and partly blocked by field clearance debris. For a short distance on either side of the entrance the inner face of the bank is revetted with drystone masonry which survives to a height of only .4m. On the 2nd edition of the OS map a fosse is shown around the E half of the enclosure, but this is no longer discernible. The ditch or drain around the SW half of the enclosure is 3m wide and .6 to 1.4m deep below the external ground level. The external face of the bank on this same SW side is intermittently faced with drystone masonry. This facing stops at the level of the top of the drain suggesting that the latter is a later feature. Internal diam. c. 31.5m E-W. A circular univallate rath KE045-061---- situated on a fairly level tract of land overlooking the Anascaul valley to NW. Around the remainder of the perimeter the enclosure is defined by a low scarp, no more than .5m high. There are faint traces of a fosse along the NE quadrant. A small depression directly inside the bank at W marks the entrance to the souterrain KE045-061001- which Ashe (1954, 21) described as 'a very extensive labyrinth of subterranean passages'. This tall stone stands on a NW facing slope overlooking the Anascaul valley. It is 3.9m high and measures 1.1m x .78m at base; E-W. An ogham inscription occurs on the ENE angle, commencing .4m above present ground level. Natural weathering and the use of the stone as a scratching post by cattle have damaged the inscription in parts, and when first recorded by Pelham (1804, 224-5), some of the scores were considered 'too faint to be delineated'. However, Macalister (1945, 157-8) gives the reading: VOENACUNAS M.... Neither the first 2 scores of the first N, nor the S or M are traceable today, although there is sufficient space to accomodate the relevant scores. A large spall has been detached above this removing the remainder of the inscription; Macalister presumes this was deliberately carried out to 'de-paganise' the monument. A simple Latin cross with slightly expanded terminals to head and arms has been carved on the SE face, about 1.03m above the ground. There is little doubt that this was a prehistoric standing stone to which the inscription and cross were added at a later time. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
