At the foot of the NE slopes of Croaghmarhin, in poor, wet pastureland. Though marked on the OS maps as a 'Stone Circle', the remains at this site are probably those of a hut or a sheep-fold. A roughly circular area, 2.53m in diameter, is enclosed by upright stones and stones laid on edge. Directly E of this is a box-like arrangement of 5 upright stones, open to NE and measuring 1.45 x 1.09m internally. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1109. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Internal diam. 36m E-W, 29.7m N-S This ruined cashel lies on the NW slopes of Croaghmarhin and contains the remains of 2 huts. The oval interior slopes markedly downhill to NW and is enclosed by a very ruined wall, constructed with large boulders. Where best preserved, the wall is 1.35m high and 1.95m wide. The SW sector is used as part of a NW-SE field fence and the upper courses here have been rebuilt. The entrance passage is located in the SE sector and is 3.3m long and 1.1 to 1.58m wide. It is lined with large stones, up to 1.15m high, and a very large slab, lying in the entrance, may have been a lintel. The best-preserved hut lies in the NW corner of the enclosure and the 2nd hut is located to S of this. (1) (KE042-085001-) This circular, drystone-built structure lies on the SE side of an oval courtyard measuring 6.4m N-S x 5.5m E-W. The wall of the latter stands to a maximum height of .6m but is largely collapsed. The entrance passage is located in the N sector. It is 2.75m long and splays from 2m in width externally to .65m internally. The hut measures 3m N-S x 3.5m E-W internally and is not well preserved. However, the NE part of the wall stands almost to roof level and rises 1m above the collapse which fills the interior. The SW sector is largely destroyed. The W facing entrance is 1.5m long and c. 1m wide. The mound that abuts the outer face of the wall at N contains a roughly constructed drystone-built chamber of irregular shape and size. The latter is not now accessible but can be viewed through gaps in the flagged roof where some of the roofing slabs have partly collapsed; it is .6m high. The mound measures 4m E-W x 2m N-S. (2) (KE042-085002-) This hut is circular in plan and measures c. 1.8m in diameter internally. The remains of the wall protrude only very slightly above the ground surface and it is not clear whether the visible stones represent the full width of the wall or only its inner face. Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 13 April 2022 - KE042-158: Cross-slab (present location), https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE042-158----. This record (KE042-158----) has been created to mark the location of this cross-slab in its present location in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. The former record for this cross-slab was KE054-015---- (listed in the 1990 SMR) but that record was changed to 'non-monument' because, following a trial excavation (Manning 1980, 39-44), it was established that the slab was 'clearly in a secondary context at this spot [KE054-015----], and that no early ecclesiastical site existed in the immediate vicinity' (Cuppage 1986, 261, no. 812). Cross-slab described by Cuppage (1986, 261, no. 812) as follows; 'In September 1978 an Early Christian cross-slab was uncovered during preparation of ground for the erection of a cattle shed at the E edge of a complex of farm buildings at Ardamore. Subsequently a two-week trial excavation was undertaken by Manning (1980, 39-44), and it was established that the slab was clearly in a secondary context at this spot, and that no early ecclesiastical site existed in the immediate vicinity. The nearest site with a possible early ecclesiastical origin lies 475m to NW (878) [Templebeg KE052-038001-]. The cross-slab is 1.22m long and 0.4m in maximum width, narrowing towards the base. The decoration is confined to the upper third of the face and consists of a highly-decorative Greek cross in a round panel, the cross being in relief with the background cut back some 7mm. The arms of the cross are made of double bands, the narrow grooves between which intersect at the centre. At the terminals, each of the double bands spirals outwards to meet the ends of one c-curve, which surrounds each terminal, and another which fills the angle between the arms and connects adjacent terminals. The upper left-hand angle is different from the others in having 2 c-curves filling the angle. A simple triskele is formed at each point where the curves meet, except in the upper left angle where 4 curved lines join in the same fashion. There is a small hole, 0.013m in diameter x 0.01m deep, in the top edge of the stone in line with the vertical axis of the cross. See attached photograph taken from Cuppage 1986, Plate XIII Cross referenced with original location KE000-001---- Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 7 April 2022 - KE042-161: Cross-slab (present location), https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE042-161----. This cross-slab was recently rediscovered acting as a covering to a drain in the Christian Brothers school in Dingle. An old photograph (1926) of the stone bore the caption 'found in area Ballyferriter near Dingle, Co. Kerry, Ireland' but nothing more is known of its original provenance. The stone is an irregular slab of sandstone measuring .63m in length x .35m in width x .09m in thickness. The decoration occupies one face of the stone only and consists of a plain cross within an irregular circle, the arms and head of the cross projecting slightly beyond the circle. The stem of the cross continues down the face of the stone as a slightly curved line and forks at base to form a triangular terminal, within which is a 2nd triangle and in the centre a small dot. The triangular expansion mid-way along the stem is probably due to spalling of the stone's surface. A perfect circle is inscribed directly below the cross-in-circle, on its left side, and there are traces of a 2nd circle in the top right corner of the stone. Two letters, d and possibly p, are vaguely discernible to left of the stem of the cross. This cross-slab is now in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Co. Chiarraí (pers. comm. Isabel Bennett, 2006). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage (compiler) 'Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey.' Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne (1986), no. 823. This is the present location, in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, of an ogham stone that was found in the townland of Coumlanders (see KE054-094----) near Lispole in 1989 embedded in the gable wall of an outhouse belonging to Eoghan O Griffín. It reads RETAGIN MAQI DOV (McManus 1991, 72). This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. To access details go to the following website: https://ogham.celt.dias.ie/search.php?ciic=Coumlanders Compiled by: Nora White Date of upload: 31 January 2017 - KE042-165: Ogham stone (present location), https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE042-165----. Hitchcock (1853, 401) discovered this stone acting as the lintel to a cottage door in Lougher townland and it is now in the museum in Ballyferriter. It formerly acted as a souterrain lintel in a rath in Rathmalode townland (see KE045-035003-), and though Macalister (1945, 189, no. 195) described the fort as small and erased, this is the only known ringfort in the townland and is therefore the probable provenance. The stone is 0.28m wide, 0.1m thick and at least 1.04m long. Its base, including the last 4 letters of the inscription, are concealed by the wooden base in which the stone now stands and Macalister's reading of this section could not be verified. However, the visible scores are all clearly legible and there is little disagreement in previous accounts as to the reading of the inscription: CURCI MAQI MUCOI V…… The V is followed by 1 or 2 vowel scores, but the stone is then fractured and the remainder of the final name is missing. Until recently this stone (see KE045-035004-) acted as the door lintel to an outhouse in Lougher townland and reputedly came from the rath in the adjoining townland of Rathmalode (Macalister 1945, 190-1, no. 196). The Co. Kerry Field Club (1939) mention briefly the possibility that it came from a grave-site (KE045-110----) in Lougher townland, but their informant is now deceased and the information could not be verified. The stone is now in Musáem Chorca Dhuibhne, Ballyferriter. It is 1.24m long, .34m wide and .1m thick. The stone is broken at one end and only 2 letters of the last name are visible. The inscription reads: ERCAVICCAS MAQI CO.....' This ogham stone (KE053-016002-) formerly stood against the W side of a N-S field wall in a field on the W side of the main Dingle to Lispole road, near the old Dingle railway station: it is now in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. It acted either as a lintel or as a jamb stone to a souterrain (KE053-016001-) in a destroyed rath (KE053-016----) in the same field (Windele 1848, 395-7; Brash 1879, 216-7). The stone is 1.08m high, 0.36m wide and 0.24m thick. The inscription occupies one of its angles and reads: TALAGNI MAQ..... (Macalister 1945, 174, no. 181). The stone is broken beyond the Q and the remainder of the inscription is missing. This stone is currently in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Co. Chiarraí (pers. comm. Isabel Bennett). Its precise original provenance is not known but it was listed in the SMR (1990) under the townland of Kilvickadownig (KE052-291----). It has been assigned a monument number (KE042-168----) at its present location in Ballyferriter. Cross-slab described by Cuppage (1986, 327, no. 862) as; 'A small triangular slab measuring a maximum of 0.44m. One face is inscribed with an equal-armed cross with expanded terminals; an oval depression occurs at the apex of the same face. The opposite side is inscribed with a more elaborate design, the main motif being an equal-armed cross with scrolled terminals. A small dot occurs in each of the angles between the arms and also at each side of the arms, in the circular spaces defined by the scrolled terminals. The design is enclosed within a triangular frame in each of the lower angles of which is an inscribed circle with a central dot and in the upper angle a small equal-armed cross with expanded terminals. The sides of the triangle do not quite meet at top, but turn upwards to form a penannular circle with a central dot. The earliest reference to this stone placed it within the cashel (580) that lies directly outside the NW corner of Páirc na Croise (859). Crawford (1912, 235) noted that it had been removed to Adare Manor but listed it under the same number as the missing slab from Páirc na Croise, as if it had been part of the same site. It is now in the National Museum of Ireland. This cross-slab (Stone H; see KE042-060022-) was found reused as part of a ceallúnach grave within the oratory at Riasc. It is a thin sandstone slab (L 0.85m. W 0.4m. T 0.05m) squared at the top and tapered along its length. The smooth-dressed face bears a recessed design consisting of a Maltese cross within a square frame. In the upper right-hand angle is a small stylised representation of a bird (probably a peacock), originally one of an opposed pair. . The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, Corca Dhuibhne. Two stones were found in close proximity to one another on the SE slopes of Knocknakilton, overlooking the Emlagh river valley. The smaller stone (KE045-032----) has been removed from the field fence into which it was incorporated and is now in the museum of Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne at Ballyferriter. The stone measures 1.2m x 0.8m x 0.07m to 0.15m thick. The markings are dominated by a large cup-and-3 circles with a radial line running from the central cup through a gap in the inner circle and across the outer circles. A diametrically opposed radial line is formed by a natural fissure. A possible cup-mark, badly eroded, lies between the 2 outer circles. The remainder of the motifs comprise at least 6 cup-marks, one now partially broken away, and a cup-and-circle which, though gapped, may once have been complete as the surface of the stone is spalled where the gap occurs. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey.' Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne (1986), 64, no. 189. Updated by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 10 November 2014 Currently in the possession of Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne and housed in the West Kerry Museum, Ballyferriter. This represents the present location (KE042-172----) of one of two stones, found in close proximity to each another, on the SE slopes of Knocknakilton, overlooking the Emlagh river valley. According to Cuppage (1986, 64, Fig. 42c), this rock art example (KE045-032----) is the smaller of the two stones, ‘which has been removed from the field fence into which it was incorporated….this stone measures 1.2m x .8m x .07m to .15m thick. The markings are dominated by a large cup-and-3 circles with a radial line running from the central cup through a gap in the inner circle and across the outer circles. A second example of rock art (KE045-032001-), recorded at the original location, remains in-situ. Compiled by: Alison McQueen and Vera Rahilly Date of upload: 7 July 2017 - KE042-173: Ogham stone (present location), https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE042-173----. It is possible that the univallate rath (KE045-081---- situated on a W facing slope, in undulating pasture land at the base of Knockafeehane mountain) was the find-place of the Brackloon ogham stone though the evidence is not altogether clear (Macalister 1945, 166-7). Hitchcock discovered the stone acting as a chimney-breast in a cottage in Ballintermon and was informed that it had been found in the souterrain of a rath in a field called Páirc an Leasa in Brackloon townland. There are 2 known raths in this townland. Hitchcock was informed that the one from which the ogham stone came had been levelled and this rath corresponds more closely to that description than does Lisnagrave (KE045-060----). The field in which this rath is located is known locally as Páirc na Claishe, not Páirc an Leasa, but it is possible that Hitchcock confused the 2 names. The confusion is increased by the fact that Windele (1848, 385-6) was informed that the stone came from a rath in Ballintermon townland. The present whereabouts of the stone is not known. All but 1 letter of the inscription were chipped off to prepare the stone as a chimney-breast. The pieces were presented by Hitchcock to the Royal Irish Academy but were subsequently lost or mislaid. The main stone, with its single letter, was later broken up for walling (Macalister 1897, 53). In 1891 a fragment of an ogham stone was found on a fence in Brackloon townland and it was suggested that this was part of the same stone. It was for some time in the grounds of Ballinagroun House, near Inch but is now in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. The inscription reads: (MA)QI MUCC(OI). Macalister also suggested that the Annagap ogham stone (KE044-065001) may have been a part of the same stone, but this now seems unlikely. This stone font was formerly in Ballywiheen Church (Teampall Bhaile Bhoithín). It consists of a roughly circular, flat-bottomed stone basin with a central perforation in its base. The basin is 0.25m deep and a maximum of 0.25m in diameter internally. A second, roughly circular, flat-bottomed basin, now damaged, is 0.38m in diameter but only 0.8m deep internally. It, too, is perforated through the base and it seems likely that the first basin was intended to sit inside the second basin and that both probably rested on a pedestal.
