Internal diam. 25m N-S, 22m E-W This univallate rath is situated on a gentle S facing slope. The W half of the earthen enclosing bank forms part of the townland boundary between Banoge South and Puckisland, and this section has either been replaced with a stone wall or faced both internally and externally with drystone masonry. The E half of the bank is 1.5 to 2m high externally, .8m high internally and c. 2m wide at base. The E facing entrance is 2m wide, and the 2 gaps at N and S are secondary features. A slight external fosse is visible only around the W half of the site. A single hut is discernible in the interior. It is c. 6m in diameter internally and the wall is reduced to a stony bank, 2m wide and .7m high. The entrance faces E. A low, concentric mound flanks the SW side of the hut. It occupies the NW corner of a field and its N and W sides are now bounded by straight field walls. Its S side is defined by a step up to the interior of 1.1m, and the earthen enclosing bank is preserved only along the E side where it is 1.5m high externally, .8m high internally and c. 2m wide. The SE facing entrance is 3.5m wide. The centre of the enclosure is occupied by the remains of a circular structure, 9m in diameter. Its ruined wall is c. 1 to 1.5m wide and less than .5m high. Internal diam. 26.5m N-S, 30.5m E-W This site is located on a S facing slope at the head of a small valley, about 250m E of KE044-046----. The roughly circular interior is enclosed by a single earthen bank and an impressive fosse. Although 2 banks are shown on the 1st edition of the OS map, and although Ashe (1954, 17-8) described the site as bivallate, the present outer bank appears to consist of field fences, and is so marked on the 2nd edition of the OS map. It is c.1m high and 1.3m wide, and is partly faced with drystone masonry. The fosse is 4.6m wide and its base lies 3.25m below the top of the outer bank and 3.7 to 5m below the top of the inner bank. The inner bank is intermittently stone-faced and rises a maximum of 1.25m above the interior. It is possible that the uppermost portion of this bank consists of a later field fence. A 1m wide gap through the inner bank at E may be the original entrance, though there is no corresponding causeway across the fosse. The fact that there is no break in the outer bank at this point supports the suggestion that the latter is a later feature. Ill-defined entrances at N and SW are probably secondary. Ashe noted a souterrain in the interior. A low, L-shaped bank in the NE sector may be related to this, and a 2nd raised area between the latter and the ringfort bank may mark a hut-site. Internal diam. 66m NW-SE, 43.1m NE-SW Lios na Ceallúnaí: This large oval enclosure was probably originally either a rath or early ecclesiastical settlement, but portion of it was later used as a calluragh burial ground (OSNB Minard, 33; An Seabhac 1939, 176; Ashe 1954, 18), and it is not clear whether the 2 rectangular structures contained within the site are associated with its original occupation or whether they are relatively late in date. A coffin-shaped standing stone, inscribed with 2 crosses, formerly stood at the edge of the calluragh area (Ashe) but it could not be located on this occasion. In the OSNB account, the site is described as a circular enclosure about 2.5 chains (50m) in diameter, with an enclosing bank c. 3 feet (.9m) high. The enclosure is now oval in plan, and for much of its circumference is defined by field fences. Only the S section of the bank is undisturbed by fences, and here it is c. 2m wide and up to 1m high. A sunken, rectangular foundation occurs in the NW corner of the interior. It measures 6m N-S x 4.8m E-W. The NE part of the enclosure is traditionally regarded as the calluragh burial ground. This area measures 38.5m SE-NW x 16.4m NE-SW and is enclosed to N and E by field fences, to W by a low bank, and to S by a 1m high drop to the level of the remainder of the interior. The ground within this smaller enclosure is strewn with grass-covered stones, mostly quartz, and it also contains a sunken, rectangular foundation which Ashe interpreted as a church. The structure measures 7m x 3.8m and is aligned NW-SE. There is a probable entrance in the NW wall. A low bank extends 8.2m S from the SW corner of this feature.
