Situated in level pasture, close to the edge of a low cliff on the E shore of Ballinskelligs Bay, this site comprises three standing stones disposed in a triangular arrangement with the largest stone at SW. The latter stands 2.9m high and measures 1.5m x .2m at base; NE-SW. Similarly orientated, and set 2.1m to the E, is the smallest stone which stands 1.4m high and measures 1m x .25m at base. The third stone, 2.75m N of the last, measures 2.15m x 1.4m x .3m; N-S. Packing stones protrude around the bases of each of the stones (Ó Nualláin 1984a, 72). It survives as a low stony bank which is best preserved at N, where it barely rises above surrounding ground level. It averages 1.6m wide and encloses an area 24m N-S. Three shallow, roughly circular depressions, averaging 2m in diameter, abut the inner face of the bank in the site's SE quadrant. These may represent the foundations of hut sites. Internal diam. 16.8m N-S, 18.6m E-W The outline of this caher, depicted as circular on the first edition of the OS map, was altered to the irregular shape shown on the second edition as a result of the outward collapse of its enclosing wall. The site is located in gently sloping pasture overlooking the Finglas river to E. The enclosing wall consists of a rubble core faced internally and externally with drystone masonry which is visible only intermittently beneath the collapse. It has an external height of .9m and does not rise appreciably above the level of the stony interior. It averages 3.5m wide and features a possible entrance at E, 1.15m wide, which is defined on both sides by upright slabs. The interior of the caher is bisected by a N-S field boundary. This overgrown site is located on the W side of the Finglas river and overlooks Ballinskelligs Bay to W. Subcircular in plan, it is defined by a ring of large boulders and small stones and measures 26m N-S x 29m E-W internally. Abutting the external face of the enclosure at NE, and .65m below the level of its interior, are the foundations of a rectangular structure, possibly an oratory (KE098-049002-), which measure 5.35m ENE-WSW x 2.85m NNW-SSE internally. The walls, of drystone construction, survive only one to two courses high and average .65m thick. The W end of the building merges with the enclosing element of the site. No entrance feature is apparent. A large burial area (KE098-049005-), 16m square, occupies the interior of the enclosure at E. It is defined by a dense concentration of uninscribed grave-markers which average .4m high. Close to the E limit of the site stands a rough, broken, stone cross (KE098-049003-), 1.34m high and .37m wide at base, with only the E arm surviving. The above description is derived from A. Internal diam. 33m N-S, 32m E-W This univallate rath is perched on the edge of the steep meander scarp that forms the W bank of the Finglas river at this point, close to Baslickane bridge. It was shown on the first edition of the OS map as a circular enclosure, but the E part of the site has now fallen into the river. A modern stone wall surmounts the surviving earthen bank, which is U-shaped in plan, and there is considerable silting-up of the external fosse at N. The bank and fosse are excellently preserved at W and S; at S the bank is 1.7m high internally, 6m high externally and 4m wide at base, and the fosse is 4.5m wide and 1.8m in depth below external ground level. An entrance gap is located at S and measures 3.5m wide. The interior of the site is densely overgrown. A number of slabs set on edge within it form no recognisable pattern. This almost completely levelled enclosure occurs in pasture on the steep cliff-edge that forms the W bank of the Finglas river. It is marked as a circular enclosure on the first edition of the OS map and is located 60m SE of a large rath (KE098-050----). Slight traces of a stony bank, .6m high and 1.4m wide, can be observed at N. A short stretch of an earthen bank occurs at S. The site measures roughly 9m in internal diameter. Internal diam. c. 18m Not marked on the OS maps, very little now remains of this circular caher which is located on elevated pasture overlooking the Finglas river to E. The enclosing wall is reduced to a low sod-covered bank and is no longer extant in the SW sector. Intermittent facing slabs are vaguely discernible through the sod-cover elsewhere. The wall has maximum dimensions at NE where it measures .5m high externally, .1m high internally and is 2.3m wide. Two prominent upright slabs, 1.25m apart, mark the entrance at SE; that at N measures 1.12m x .8m x .4m and its partner opposite measures 1.2m x .6m x .3m. The interior of the caher is uneven. This site appears to be the 'Caher' referred to by O'Connell, who recorded a large lintel on the inner side of its entrance (OPW). This may be the large stone which is now partly concealed beneath a low irregular mound of earth and gravel at this location. O'Connell also recorded two openings to a drystone-built souterrain (KE098-062001-) here. The first was located in the enclosing wall at S and gave access to a passage which extended 17 feet (5.2m) towards NNW, at which point it turned at right angles and continued to ENE for a further 10 feet (3m). Here, flooding prevented further access. The second opening was located 9m NNW from the first, and apparently gave access to a passage which extended to S. Neither of these openings are now apparent. Known locally as 'Ballybrack Dolmen', this monument is reputed to mark the burial place of Fial, the wife of one of the Milesians who landed in nearby Ballinskelligs Bay (Barrington 1976, 285). It consists of four large overlying slabs, the uppermost measuring 3.33m x 1.88m x .3m. The other slabs are broadly similar in dimensions, and a scatter of small rounded stones, including some quartz, occurs around the base of the structure. The above description is derived from A. A series of earth-embedded boulders occur outside it at W, where there is also a low, ill-defined mound, c. 5m in diameter and .5m high. The nature of this site remains unclear. A hut site (KE098-132----) occurs in the same field, a short distance to N. The enclosure, almost completely obscured by overgrowth and field clearance material, measures 20m N-S 19m E-W in overall dimensions. The original walling is only exposed for a very short stretch at S. Here it measures 1.8m wide and is constructed of an inner and outer flanking of drystone masonry which encloses a rubble core.
