Pit no: C28 - Excavation by Jacinta Kiely under licence no. 99E0360 was summarised as follows; 'Monitoring of all ground disturbance aspects of a factory site in the Monavalley Industrial Estate, in the northern part of Tralee town, was undertaken to comply with a planning condition. An area of archaeological stratigraphy was noted during topsoil-stripping and was subsequently excavated. Four pits were excavated. One of the pits, measuring 1.6m north-south by 0.9m and 0.98m deep, was stone-lined on the south-east side. A saddle quern and a rubbing stone had been reused to line the pit. Iron slag was recovered from the upper fill. A second large pit was found 1m to the south-west; it measured 3.1m north-south by 2.7m and 0.8m deep. Two small pits were found to the south and east. They measured 0.8m north-south by 0.76m by 0.2m deep and 0.75m north-south by 0.7m by 0.15m deep. The material recovered from one of the large pits would suggest that they are prehistoric in date. Post-excavation work is continuing' (Kiely 2000,116-7; www.excavations.ie 1999:341; Kiely and Dunne 2005, 45). The evidence indicates that the monument has been totally removed (both above- and below-ground archaeology). In consequence, it will not be included in the revised RMP. 'Non-licensed monitoring of ground disturbance aspects associated with the development of the above site took place. The development site was inherited after the topsoil had been removed and the ground level was artificially raised and levelled. Eight potential archaeological remains were identified during the excavation of the foundations and subsequently excavated. Seven turned out to be post-medieval in nature. The remaining area (Area VI) contained the remains of a charcoal-enriched pit, truncated by a wall foundation. The function of the pit is unknown. 'Located in the same development site as 99E0360, above, a pit, measuring 1.82m north-east/south-west by 0.92m and 0.82m deep, was truncated to the east by a modern drain. The pit contained two fills. The upper fill included 30% of burnt sandstone fragments. The base contained a high percentage of charcoal. Nine stake-holes cut the western end of the base of the pit. They were aligned north-west/south-east. They were on average 0.08m in diameter and 0.13m deep. Two stake-holes cut the eastern end of the base of the pit. They had a similar diameter but were on average 0.4m deep. Nine stake-holes were clustered to the immediate west of the pit. They were aligned north-west/south-east. It is likely that the stakes to the west and in the western end of the pit functioned as a windbreak, sheltering the pit from the prevailing westerly winds. The site is interpreted as a fulacht fiadh by the excavator, though only a pit containing heat shattered stones and charcoal seems to have been excavated. A radiocarbon date of 3370+/-70BP was calculated from a fill of this pit/trough. No finds were recovered.' Description from ‘The Prehistoric Settlement of the Lee Valley, Tralee, Co. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
