Calluragh Burial Ground: This site is titled as such on the first edition of the OS map, but no indication of its exact location is provided. There is no locally known burial ground here, but a 'Calluragh' (KE106-056005-) is marked on the second edition of the OS map less than half a kilometer to SSE. It is possible that the name was incorrectly positioned on the first edition. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 1045. Located on a slight eminence overlooking Darrynane Bay to SW, this poorly preserved enclosure occurs in a dense thicket. A more recent square enclosure overlies it, and the original enclosing bank is only clearly visible at NE. It is marked as a circular enclosure on the first edition of the OS map, and the overall dimensions of the site are 12m N-S x 19m E-W. At NE, large blocky boulders were used in its construction, but these are now sod-covered and survive only one course high. The remnants of a possible hut (KE106-056001-) appear to underlie the NE side of the later enclosure. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 713. Marked as a small enclosure on the OS maps, this site is located in pasture overlooking Darrynane Bay to SW. The oval interior measures 8.55m N-S x 7.85m E-W, and is enclosed by a low wall composed of a rubble core faced internally with intermittent upright slabs. Field clearance material abuts the SW sector of the site. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 714. In rough grazing, on a terrace on the lower S-facing slopes of Cahernageeha Mountain and overlooking Derrynane Bay to the SW. A circular enclosed area (diam. c. 30m) is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map, while a roughly oval enclosed area (c. 27m N-S; c. 21m E-W), named 'Cealluragh Burial Gd.', is indicated on the 1896 OS 6-inch map. A section of the original enclosing element (L c. 6m; T 1.35m; H 0.45m) is visible along the W arc. It consists of an inner and an outer row of large block-type stones with evidence of an infill of smaller stones. The enclosing element is unclear W-N due to damage and a dense cover of briars and ferns. Later, roughly built, slightly curving walls at E and at S may have come from the original enclosing element and from the surrounding stony fields. The interior is covered with dense overgrowth and was used as a children's burial ground (KE106-056005-). At least some of the stone grave-markers may also have come from the original enclosing element. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Calluragh Burial Ground: This enclosed burial ground is of approximately triangular plan and overlooks Darrynane Bay to SW. It was recorded in the late nineteenth century that it was still in use for the burial of unbaptised children (OSRNB). Measuring 23m N-S x 21.8m E-W internally, it is enclosed by a poorly preserved drystone wall. This is best visible at N, where block-like slabs form inner and outer facings to its rubble core. Here it averages 1.35m wide and survives to only one or two courses high. Elsewhere the enclosing element is mostly obscured by later walling. The overgrown interior has a dense concentration of loose stone and boulders. Some low upright slabs are arranged in N-S rows, but most appear to be haphazardly positioned. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 985. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Caherdaniel/Cathair Dónall: Internal diam. 25.2m N-S, 24.5m E-W. This imposing circular caher is located on the W side of the Coomnahorna river valley and overlooks Darrynane Bay to SW. It is built on an area of rock outcrop which falls steeply away from the N sector of the site. Its massive enclosing wall consists of a rubble core faced internally and externally with well-built drystone masonry. Collapse abuts the external wall-face from NE to SW and is also present along much of the inner wall-face. Sections of the latter have been rebuilt, and, apart from obviously secondary stretches of walling, such as those at E and S, it is difficult to distinguish the original from the later walling. Windele noted, in 1848, that the inner face of the enclosing wall was modern and that the site has been adapted for use as a pound (RIA MS 12 C 11). The external wall-face is well-preserved, particularly at N where it survives to a maximum height of 5m and displays a pronounced batter returned to the full height of the wall. At S it is obscured by brambles and thicket, and at SE it has a minimum external height of .7m. The wall has an average basal width of 3.6m and stands 1m high above the raised interior of the caher. A 5m long-entrance passage, 2.5m wide, is located at SW. A stone field boundary overlies its E side and severely modifies its outline. A large slab, 1.75m x .9m x .2m, leans against a modern wall 2.3m E of the passage and may have served as a lintel. Immediately N of another overlying field wall at E is an infilled, 1.45m wide, gap. A 4.8m long recess, .7m deep, occurs in the inner wall-face at N and appears to be an original feature. A number of upright slabs and traces of drystone facing occur in the NW quadrant of the interior of the caher and possibly represent the foundations of a hut (KE106-063003-). The holed stone noted by Westropp at this site (1912, 295) cannot be identified. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 562. Internal diam. 19.6m N-S, 19m E-W This ruined caher is located on top of a rise a short distance W of the Coomnahorna river, and overlooks Darrynane Bay to SW. The enclosing wall is largely overgrown with thicket, but where visible at S it consists of a core of small stones faced internally and externally with larger rounded slabs. Here, it measures .65m high externally, .4m high internally and is 2.6m wide. The entrance at SE is defined by two upright slabs, set .9m apart and averaging .9m high x .8m wide. A large prostrate slab lies directly E of the entrance. Two field walls traverse the interior of the site. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Caherereganagh/Cathair Chraobhach: This site is incorrectly positioned on the first edition of the OS map, where it is indicated as a circular enclosure. It is located on a ledge of high ground, W of the Coomnahorna river, overlooking Darrynane Bay to SW. The site survives as an ill-defined, subcircular mound which is covered in dense vegetation. Measuring 12.6m N-S x 12m E-W in diameter, it rises 1.5m above surrounding ground level. It is composed of earth, gravel, a substantial quantity of small stone and some large boulders. Some of the latter may represent field clearance. An inconspicuous opening on the mound's NE side, marked by a roofing lintel, leads into a souterrain passage (KE106-067001-), titled 'Cave' on the OS maps, that appears to extend to W. The passage is blocked by an accumulation of modern domestic debris. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. This monument was initially identified as rock art by Aoibheann Lambe in 2014. In improved, gently undulating pasture (54m OD), on a SE-facing slope. On W-side of valley of Coomnahorna River. Limited views S->W and overlooked by Cahernageeha Mountain to NW, Coad Mountain to NE and high ground to E. A large boulder which has a ridge (long-axis E-W) forming highest part of stone. A smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 3.60m N-S; 6.05m E-W; max. H 1.50m at N) having a three decorated surfaces bearing over one hundred weathered motifs. A subrectangular decorated surface to S-facing aspect bears seventy cupmarks (range diam. 3.5-9cm; D 5-20mm), including three cupmarks (diam. 5cm; D 5-6mm) on top of stone ridge. There are five cup-and-ring motifs (overall diam. 12-14cm; ring Wth 1.5-2cm; D 4-5cm; cup diam. 6cm; D 14-15mm) and thirteen linear grooves (L 35-85cm; Wth 2-3.5cm; D 4-5mm). A natural valley-like cleavage plain filled with moss and field clearance stones defines lower portion of S-facing decorated surface. A roughly triangular decorated surface to SW-facing aspect bearing natural fractures and weathered motifs including nine cupmarks (diam. 4-6cm; D 5-6mm). A ledge (H 20cm) separates one cupmark on higher part of stone, to SE from the others on lower part of stone, to NW. A subrectangular decorated surface to N-facing aspect bears thirteen cupmarks (diam 4-5.5cm; D 5-11cm) and a faint linear groove (L 19cm; Wth 2cm; D 2mm) at W. A linear groove (L 32cm; Wth 2cm; D 2mm) at E is very faint and continues onto S-facing aspect, where it incorporates two cupmarks near base; A large oval depression (dims. 14cm x 12cm; D 11cm) is adjacent to E. In improved pasture (69m OD), with occasional earthfast boulders, on a S-facing slope. Excellent views all around, especially Darrynane Bay to SW. A smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 1.35m N-S; 1.90m E-W; max. H 1.02m at E) having a rectangular decorated surface (dims. 0.90m N-S; 1.10m E-W) with a SW-facing aspect and bearing weathered decorative elements covered in lichen. The motifs consist of a cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 14cm; ring Wth 2-2.5cm; D 4mm; cup diam. 6cm; D 16mm) located centrally. A second cup-and-ring motif (overall diam. 12cm; ring Wth 2cm; D 4mm; cup diam. 6cm; D 12mm) is to NW side of decorated surface. Two cup-and-partial ring motifs are located along the northern margin. Five cupmarks (range diam. 3-4.5cm; D 3-7mm) are off-centre to E and W with an isolated example in the SE corner. One of these cupmarks (diam. 4cm; D 1cm) has a radial groove (L 14cm; Wth 2-3cm; D 4mm) at W. A linear groove (Wth 2-3.5cm; L 0.62m) bisects the stone (long-axis E-W); There is a gap (L 10cm) in this groove before it continues (L 0.30m) at W end. In improved pasture (57m OD), on a N-facing slope, surrounded by mountains and high ground all around. Incorporated into drystone boundary (long-axis NNW-SSE) between pasture field to W and dwelling house to E. A smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 2.10m N-S; 3.20m E-W; max. H 1.60m at N) with a rectangular decorated surface (dims. 0.50m N-S; 0.20m E-W) having a gentle E-facing aspect. A cluster of three cup-and-ring motifs (overall diam. 9cm; ring Wth 1cm; D 2-3mm; cup diam. 4-5.5cm; D 10mm) at W end of decorated surface; cup-and-ring at N is incomplete and has a ring present SW->W->NNE. Potential cupmark (diam. 5cm; D 10mm) adjacent to N is rough and uneven within. A cluster of four possible cupmarks (diam. 4-5cm; D 4-5mm) is located 1.02m to NE of cup-and-ring motifs. These are smooth and regular in plan, although not as pronounced as other cupmark motifs and may indicate natural dimpling in the rock surface. Motifs are difficult to see due to overhanging branches of whitethorn trees and other vegetation. A loose field clearance boulder bearing four drill holes (potentially for dynamite), is located above a natural ledge upon rock surface. This monument was initially identified as rock art by A.
