Widening a laneway here, at the base of the N slopes of Croaghmarhin, led to the discovery, in October 1966, of a single-chambered souterrain. This was inspected shortly afterwards by Rynne (NMI) but is not now accessible or even visible from the surface. Oval or sub-rectangular in plan, it was of drystone construction and measured 2.1m N-S and a maximum of 1.05m E-W. It was 1m high. The uppermost stone courses were slightly corbelled and the whole was roofed by 3 large lintels averaging .1 to .12m in thickness. The S wall was provided with a recess, rounded in plan, .35m wide and .65m above the floor level; its lower half was not stone-lined. Access to the souterrain was gained by removing one of the lintels and no other entrance was discovered. Though the chamber was cleared of all fill the only finds, 3 horse shoes and 2 animal bones, were all probably recent introductions. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 748. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. This site was titled 'Cahir (site of)' on the Fair Plan and described in the OSNB (Dunurlin, 47) as 'a circular fort about 2 chains (c. 40m) in diameter of earth and now ruined to the ground'. It was not marked on the published editions of the OS map. No visible trace now survives. It was situated on a gentle N facing slope overlooking Smerwick Harbour. In 1966, a souterrain was discovered about 100m to NNW (KE042-048----). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 644. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Caherquin Church/An Teampall Bán: This may be the site of the single cell church which appears on Admiral Winter's contemporary map of the Siege of Smerwick Harbour in 1580 (Public Record Office, London, MPF 75) and which was reputed to have been a small chapel built by the Spaniards (Smith 1756, 187). Local tradition records that the victims of the massacre in 1580 were subsequently buried here (KE042-002001-). A Protestant church erected on the site in 1800 fell into decay shortly afterwards (OSNB Dunurlin, 30) and there are now no visible remains of any structure. Graves and human bones, periodically exposed in the vicinity of the church by sand erosion, are traditionally considered to be the interments of sailors and seafaring men (O'Sullivan 1931, 507; OSNB). A cross-inscribed stone, reused as a door lintel and gap-post in Ballineanig-Castlequarter townland, reputedly came from here (KE042-150----). The site lies on the low-lying sandy ground bordering the S side of Smerwick Harbour. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 991. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
