Internal diam. 20m E-W, at least 20.3m N-S A univallate rath with souterrain situated on the E slopes of Corrin mountain near the entrance to the valley of the Finglas river. It commands an extensive view from Tralee Bay in the N to Caherconree in the SE. The N and NW sectors of the enclosing bank have been removed and are replaced by 2 field fences running N-S and E-W. These probably lie slightly inside the original line of the bank. The remaining bank is a maximum of 1.5m high externally and .6m internally; it varies in width at base from 2.5 to 3.5m. A large gap in the bank at E measures 3 to 4m in width. There is also a 1 to 2m wide gap between the E end of the bank and the N field boundary. An oval, stone-lined hollow is located a little W of centre in the interior. It measures 2m x 3.5m c. 1m deep and is open to E. Three capstones of a souterrain are exposed 2m to NNW of the latter feature. The passage thus indicated is c. 0.75m wide and runs NNW-SSE for c. 3m. Three large boulders, visible on the outer face of the bank due S of the latter, may be related to a continuation of the souterrain. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 358. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Internal diam. 23.5m N-S, 22.9m E-W A univallate rath with souterrain situated on an E facing slope on the W side of the valley of the Finglas river. There are good, clear views in all directions along the valley and N to Tralee Bay. The earthen enclosing bank is faced internally with drystone masonry which survives to a maximum height of 1m but which has collapsed entirely in parts. Externally the bank ranges in height from .8m on the upslope side to 2.3m on the downslope side. A field fence runs along the crest of the bank in the N sector and collapse from this has obscured the outline of the bank in the interior; the outer face is also greatly disturbed. There are 2 possible entrances through the bank. To NW, directly S of the field fence, the bank is reduced in height to .3m and its stone facing turns outwards and lines the S edge of the gap for c. 0.8m; it is not certain that this was an entrance. A more substantial break, 2.1m wide, occurs at SSE. A stone-lined depression, a little N of centre, marks the location of a souterrain which appears to continue in a NE direction but which is not now accessible. A probable air-vent opens onto the outer face of the bank at NE, c. 0.6m above the present ground surface. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 357. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Internal diam. 18.4m This circular univallate rath, situated on the E slopes of Corrin mountain, commands a panoramic view over the valley of the Finglas river and through the valley entrance to Tralee Bay. The earthen enclosing bank rises a maximum of 1.2m above the interior and 1.5m above the base of the fosse; it is 2.7m wide at base. Two stretches of stone facing are visible on the inner face at NW and SSW, preserved to a maximum height of .5m. The fosse is c. 2.3m wide and up to 1m deep below the external ground level. There has been some disturbance along the exterior of the bank in the E sector and the fosse can no longer be traced here. It is not clear which of the 3 breaks in the bank, at SSW, SSE and NE, represent the original entrance. Directly S of the latter break, the bank is very disturbed, but in the outer face is what appears to be a small, partly drystone-lined chamber measuring 1.7m N-W, .7m E-W and .75m in height; it is open to E. The function of this feature is not clear but it may be part of a souterrain. Directly inside the bank at this point there is an oval hollow measuring 6.5m NNW-SSE, 3.5m NNE-SSW and a maximum of .8m deep. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Faisi's Grave/Uaigh Fais: A large slab, lying prostrate in a field on the W side of Glenfais, bears a simple incised cross, an ogham inscription and an inscription in half-uncial script. The stone measures 3.4m long x 1.8m wide x c. 0.5m thick. Rhys (1891, 654) referred to the site as a 'low cromlech', but there is no visible evidence to support this identification. The ogham inscription extends 1.1m along the upper S edge of the stone. It is still quite legible, although the side scores are reversed (S for C, Q for N etc). Corrected it reads: CONUNETT MOQI CONu/eRI Macalister's (1945, 167, no. 176) U of CONURI is uncertain as it is difficult to be sure of the number of vowel notches intended. McManus suggests e/i (1997, 66). Alongside this is the inscription in half-uncials which Macalister read as: FECT CUNURI The C and final U of the 2nd word are difficult to make out. A rectangular chamber of drystone corbelled construction was uncovered in the 1930's in the NW corner of the field in which Camp castle (KE037-032----) was situated. It measured c. 3.5m in length x 2m in height and was roofed by 1 or more flags. In one wall was a niche or flue with other niches opening off its sides (local information; CKFC 1941). Camp Castle: Possibly built by a branch of the FitzGeralds (Coleman 1909, 152-3), the castle is now represented only by a low mound and some random mortared masonry. Grass-grown wall foundations adjoining the mound may be the remains of ancillary buildings. The site has changed little since the 19th century (OSNB Kilgobban, 48). The castle was located in a commanding position, overlooking Tralee Bay to the North. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
