Internal diam. 54.25m N-S, 49.75m E-W This and the following three raths are located in close proximity to one another on the lower E slopes of Bentee mountain, overlooking the Carhan and Ferta river valleys. This large subcircular univallate site features an external fosse and, internally, traces of three huts. It also reputedly contains a drystone-built souterrain. The fosse averages 1.1m deep below external ground level and measures 3.5m in basal width. It is quite shallow in the NE sector. The earthen, almost vertical-sided bank has a maximum basal width of 4.2m at E and it falls 1.75m on average to the gently sloping interior. A causeway across the fosse leads to a 2.75m wide entrance gap in the enclosing bank at E; a corresponding gap occurs at W, but this appears to be of recent origin. A series of E-W cultivation ridges occupies the gently sloping interior of the rath and appear to avoid the huts. The first (KE079-051001-) of these huts is roughly circular in plan, measuring 4.25m x 3.9m internally, and occurs in the SW quadrant. Its sod-covered stone walls survive up to .3m high internally and feature an entrance gap at N. Henry records two further circular huts within the enclosure (1957, 74), which may be identified with the two overgrown circular mounds in the in the NW (KE079-051003-) and NE (KE079-051004-) quadrants. These measure 6m and 8m in diameter respectively. Donaldson recorded that the stone foundations of these huts were quarried away in the early 1920s, during the construction of the nearby waterworks (1956). A stone-built souterrain passage (KE079-051002-) was accessible within living memory, through an opening adjacent to the first hut. It was aligned E-W, its side-walls were formed by a basal row of orthostats overlain by drystone masonry, and it was roofed with stone lintels (local information). No surface trace of the souterrain is now apparent. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 478. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Internal diam. 24m N-S, 28m E-W One of a group of four raths situated in close proximity to one another on the E side of Bentee mountain, this univallate site is situated on a large level terrace. A series of old field boundaries skirt its enclosing element at E, S and W. The external fosse ranges from 1m to 2m wide and falls to an average depth of .6m below external ground level. Dense vegetation obscures its base, and the fosse is poorly preserved at SE. The earthen bank rises 1.4m high externally, falls 1m to the interior and has a basal width of 3.5m. A 3m wide gap at W, and a corresponding causeway across the fosse, represent the original entrance to the site. Donaldson recorded that the rath's interior was disturbed in the 1950s and that traces of ash and charcoal were apparent beneath the sod (1956). A possible conjoined hut (KE079-052003-), represented by two curving sections of wall, is located in the interior of the site at E. The arc at N indicates a hut (KE079-052001-) with an internal diameter c. 3m, and that at S, c. 5.5m. The exposed inner wall-faces are preserved up to .3m high and are horizontally coursed. The walls vary from .6m to .9m thick. Centrally located in the interior of the rath are the poorly preserved remains of a drystone-built souterrain (KE079-052002-), marked by a 7.5m long depression, aligned N-S. Only one lintel remains in situ and the accessible portion of the passage measures 1.65m long and 1.08m wide. Two quern-stones, located in an adjacent farmyard, are reputed to have come from this site (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. One of a group of four raths on the E slopes of Bentee mountain, this univallate enclosure has been severely disturbed. The construction of a trackway in the 1950s resulted in the levelling of the enclosing element at S. The outline of the earthen bank and external fosse are best preserved from W to N and are only barely traceable from N to E. The fosse is 2.2m wide and has been re-cut to serve as a drain at E. The bank rises to an external height of 1.5m, is 2.3m wide and drops .5m to the interior. Stone facing occurs in places along its flanks and appears to be secondary. A possible hut site (KE079-053002-) occurs in the SW quadrant of the rath. It survives as a low stony sod-covered mound with a central depression measuring 4.1m across. There is no visible trace of the 'Cave' marked in this quadrant of the site on the OS maps. It was noted by Henry as a souterrain (KE079-053001-), located at the SW side of the hut (1957, 74). Internal diam. 23.7m N-S, 22.3m E-W This bivallate rath is one of a group of four situated on the E slopes of Bentee mountain. It is the most southerly of the group and lies 150m SSW of the previous site. The outer bank is well-preserved except at NW, where it is no longer extant, and at S, where it has been replaced with a stone-built field boundary which maintains its curvature. At NE it has a maximum external height of 1.5m, a width of 2.5m and falls on average 1m to the base of the 3.5m wide, flat-bottomed fosse. The steep-sided inner bank rises 2.3m above the fosse and measures up to 4m in basal width. Its inner face is revetted with drystone masonry, and some stones visible in its outer face at NE and S suggest a similar feature there. A 2.6m wide entrance gap is located at E, where a 3m wide causeway crosses the fosse. Directly inside the entrance at S is an L-shaped wall, .8m wide and up to .6m high, which abuts the inner face of the bank. It forms a building which is open to N and measures 2.1m x 1m internally. The remains of a large rectangular building (KE079-054001-) occupy much of the N half of the rath's interior. The structure measures 16.6m N-S x 7m E-W internally and its 1.5m thick walls survive to a maximum height of 1.25m. Three gaps occur in its S side-wall, the central one of which, 1.7m wide, may be the original entrance. Donaldson recorded the blocked opening to a souterrain (KE079-054002-) just N of the rectangular house site (1956). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
