This promontory fort is situated on the next headland N of the promontory fort below (KE009-077----). The promontory is 62m NW-SE and 23m NE-SW. In the W sector of the promontory is a rectangular house site 13.4m x 7.7m with walls 2m thick. They rise in height to between .16m to .25m. To the SE of this is another rectangular house-site 13.4m x 4.9m. In the ENE sector is a sub-circular area 6.8m in diameter, with a 3.2m opening to the E. The fosse is situated on the SE side and is 3.65m wide and ranges between 1.79m to 2.34m below the surrounding land. It is difficult to know whether the house-sites and Brown's Castle (KE009-024002-) are contemporary or whether the features contained within the promontory are of an earlier date. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 111. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013 - KE009-024002: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE009-024002-. Browne's Castle was possibly built by the pirate Browne family in the mid-15th century. Very little now remains of the castle, which is situated within an earlier promontory fort (KE009-024001-). All that can be seen today is a section of the N wall, c 3.7m long, which is situated right on the edge of the fosse. At the NE angle of the wall are the remains of what would appear to be a spiral staircase in a round turret. Westropp (1909) found much more of the castle surviving, and he writes of a strong batter, but with the foundations of the walls crumbling it is impossible to note this feature. The door was to the N and slightly raised off the ground, with a vault and a murder hole in the porch. He also states that the castle had three storeys and that there was a vault over the second floor. He was also able to see the spiral staircase and porter's lodge on the ground floor. The lodge was vaulted and lit by two splayed loop-holes, with recesses and lintelled head. According to Westropp the staircase led only to the first floor, where it changed direction towards the NW angle. The ground floor had a large window to the S and some other deeply recessed window loops. The upper floor rested on rude stones and plain rounded corbels. The vault was somewhat rounded with wicker centering. Hickson (1841) remarks on a side wall extending along the fosse, but Westropp could find no trace of it in 1909; the castle has deteriorated a great deal more since then, and today there is no sign of any windows, doors, floors, or vaults. According to Toal (1995, 79, no. 111) in the promontory fort (KE009-024001-) there are two rectangular house sites (see KE009-024003-). According to Toal (1995, 79, no. 111) in the 'ENE sector' of the promontory fort (KE009-024001-) is a 'sub-circular area 6.8m in diameter, with a 3.2m opening to the E.' This semi-circular enclosure is not marked on any edition of the OS maps. It consists of a semi-circular area enclosed by a ditch which is 1.6m wide and .4m deep. Internal diameter 28m N-S, 25m E-W This sub-circular cahir with souterrain is situated on pastureland which is gently sloping N. The enclosing stone bank, which is now covered by grass, rises to a maximum of .9m high above the interior and 1.4m above the external ground level. A 2.6m wide possible entrance to the N provides access to the interior. In the W sector of the interior is a raised area, .8m high. Within this raised area is a depression, 2.2m N-S, 2.6m E-W and .7m deep. Also, 2.6m NW of this feature is a smaller depression, 2m N-S and 1.8m E-W, which is contained within the enclosing bank. 'Cave' is marked on the 1841-42 OS map, so these depressions may represent the collapsed chambers of a souterrain (KE009-026001-). The above description is derived from C. Circular univallate rath KE009-030---- is situated SE of KE009-029---- and in the corner of a pastoral field which is gently sloping N. Enclosed by a well-defined earthen bank c 6m wide. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and in the SW sector there is a kidney-shaped mound c 6m high, which is curved towards the bank. At the top of the in-curve is the possible opening, 2.4m x 2.2m, for the souterrain (KE009-030001-). To the N of this kidney-shaped mound is a small mound, 2.6m x 2m and c 4m E of this is a sub-circular mound, 4m x 3.4m. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 345. Westropp (1910, 315-16) mentions a promontory fort just S of Brown's Castle (KE009-024002-). This headland appears to have been known as 'Dooneen' and consisted of a crescent-shaped bank, constructed of stone and measuring c3m wide and .8m high, with a shallow fosse about .2m in width and .8m deep. A causeway, 1m in width, traversed the fosse and rampart. Even when Westropp visited here in 1910 it was very much levelled, and today no surface trace of these features survive. This site is situated in pastureland which is sloping in a SW-NE direction to a stone and earthen field boundary 32m away. The site does not appear on any edition of the OS maps. It survives today as a low sub-circular rise measuring 5.6m in diameter and no more than .25m in height. The centre of this rise has been disturbed and a large amount of stones are visible. According to the landowner, Mr Dineen, until recently three small irregularly shaped uprights protruded from this rise and had 'squiggles' designs on them. No trace of these could be found. This enclosure (KE009-092-) is situated E of possible lead mines and Pierce's Island (KE009-027001-). Although not documented or marked on any edition of the OS maps, it shows up quite clearly on aerial photographs. An earthen ridge runs across the W sector of the neck of this promontory, c 22.5m long, 2.4m wide at the base and .35m high. NE of this ridge is a sub-circular depression, 2m x 3.95m, which has been completely filled with stones. According to local tradition it was once a long shaft. Immediately NE is a sub-rectangular structure, 7.4m N-S and 4.4m E-W. The enclosing stone bank rises to .2m high. The enclosed headland is c 22m N-S and 36.3m E-W. Situated c 90m E of the above sub-rectangular enclosure is a blowhole called Poultarrif (Poll an Tairbh - hole of the bull) (OSNB, 264) (KE009-093----). It is subcircular, being about 23m N-S and c 14.6m E-W. Running down the side of this blowhole are drill runs, and they are evident all around the side. Quite possibly this was also a lead mine, which was worked until the natural work of the blowhole made the mine collapse; it may be connected to the next site. Promontory fort described in 2002 as follows; ‘A small low-lying north-west facing subcircular promontory is cut off from the mainland by a modern earthen bank and the remains of an earlier fosse and inner bank, now reduced to a low 1m high scarp. A causewayed entrance gave access to the site from the south. The bank has a barely visible (20cms high max.) inner edge and no trace of stone revetment can be seen. Some undulations in the level of the interior are visible, as are the remains of a perimeter bank running along the shoreline. Otherwise the interior is featureless. The area is one of gently undulating fertile open pasture. The sea is accessible, although with difficulty, from within. Sea rocks extending northwards from the headland exposed at high tide imply the headland was once larger than the present size suggests' (Casey 2002, 30, no. J). - KE009-095: Promontory fort - coastal, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE009-095----. Possible promontory fort described in 2002 as follows; ‘A small subrectangular west-facing promontory juts out 20m from the straight coastline. It is cut off from the mainland by a modern shoreline earthen bank but also by a 3m wide 1m deep fosse running along the inside of this bank. This site has not been inspected and it is unclear whether or not this feature is artificial. The area is flat and has been drained, although flooding is visible close by. The cliffs flanking the headland are sheer’ (Casey 2002, 31, no. K).
