In pasture, on a NE-facing slope, overlooking the Gweestin River to the N. A roughly circular area (c. 30m N-S) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 3.6m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.25m) E-SW, by a field boundary which is incorporated into the bank SW-NW and by a recently constructed E-W lane which truncates the N sector. The remains of an old E-W lane crosses the interior to the N of the centre, overlying the bank along the NW-NNW and NE-E arcs. This lane was originally defined by two earthen banks but the bank on the S side has been levelled except for the E and W extremities. There is a possible entrance at ESE. The N half of the interior is raised to compensate for the downslope. The interior to the N of the disused lane is strewn with large stones and debris. A souterrain (KE058-050001-) is associated with this rath. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. In a rath (KE058-050----). There are no visible remains of this souterrain. A lane crosses the N half of the rath on an E-W axis and a waterlogged area on this lane may mark its location. It was recorded in the 1840s that a 'cavern...was discovered in 1832 by labourers who were sinking a small lane or carway which runs through the centre of the Fort' (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 3, 23). In pasture, on a low hill. A circular area (c. 32m N-S) defined by the remains of two earthen banks, an intervening fosse and a possible outer fosse. The inner bank (Wth 5.2m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 1.5m) is covered with overgrowth and appears to be stone-faced internally. A stone wall (H c. 1m) is built on top of it WSW-NW. The intervening fosse (Wth 2.65m at the base) is covered with overgrowth in places. The outer bank (Wth 2.95m; int. H 1.25m; ext. H 1.2m) is covered with overgrowth and stone-faced externally. A possible outer fosse (Wth c. 2.5m; D 0.3m), which has been infilled in places, is evident S-SW. The interior is level and covered with overgrowth. There is an opening into a souterrain (KE058-076001-) in the NW quadrant. An entrance occurs in both banks at E. This rath was recorded as 'Cliddagh Fort' in the 1840s when it was described as being in the boundary at the S end of Cleedagh townland (OSNB, Kilcummin, no. 2, 8). It was mentioned in the 1940s as 'a great earthen Fort, with two rings' (ITA). Another rath (KE058-073----) is c. 40m to the WSW. In a rath (KE058-076----). A portion of a stone-lined and lintelled passage (on a NW-SE axis) is visible through an opening in the NW quadrant of the rath. The souterrain was recorded in the 1940s as a '4ft [1.22m] opening to very extensive underground chambers, propped up by large stone slabs, and some masonry work' (ITA). In improved, lush pasture, on a NW-facing slope. Reported to the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as the low remains of a small enclosure (one of three). Low profile circular area (diam. c. 8m) defined by scarp (Wth 1.25m; H 0.1m) NW->E->SW. Scarp (Wth 2.5m; H 0.2m) is less defined on the downslope to N. The monument is traceable in this area as a very low rise which is truncated to W by a field boundary (long axis NW-SE) and tertiary road. The remains of a levelled field boundary (long axis ENE-WSW) are to E; This corresponds to boundary depicted upon OS historic mapping.
