This ringfort was destroyed about 15 to 20 years ago. It was shown on the OS maps as a roughly circular univallate enclosure. From the landowner's description it would appear to have been an earthen rath, possibly with some revetment walling along the inner face of the bank. A souterrain (KE042-042001-) discovered in the 1920's appears to have been located close to this site and may have been associated with it. During the removal of a heap of stones, a circular stone structure, about 10 feet (3m) in diameter, was exposed. An underground passage, about 3 feet (.9m) wide and 3 feet deep, led away from this and in it was found a small holed stone (O'Sullivan 1931, 506). Many years prior to this, a larger souterrain was discovered 'on the other side of the fence and on the same farm'. It is not clear whether these were separate structures or whether they formed part of a single souterrain. The area is one of low-lying level ground on the SSE side of Smerwick Harbour. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 656. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In the early part of this century a souterrain was discovered c. 275m NNE of KE042-045----. It consisted of an extensive stone-built passage, c. 1.75m high and aligned E-W (NMI). No visible trace survives. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 754. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. This structure, located on the low-lying level land S of Smerwick Harbour, was removed about 40 years ago. The only visible remains consist of an irregular area, 10m x 4m, raised slightly above the surrounding field level. Westropp (1910, 203) described the feature as a 'dolmen', comprised of 3 roughly rectangular chambers partly embedded in a low mound. The contiguous but irregularly-positioned chambers were defined by large slabs, up to 8 feet (c. 2.4m) long, but no heights were recorded. Internally the chambers measured c. 8 foot 10 inches (c. 2.7m) x 4 feet (c. 1.2m), c. 4 foot 2 inches (c. 1.3m) x c. 7 feet 6 inches (c. 2.3m) and 5 feet 2 inches (c. 1.6m) x 4 feet 2 inches (c. 1.3m). The largest chamber was roofed by 2 large slabs, the others by a single slab each. The 2 larger chambers were aligned NE-SW but did not form a straight line. The W chamber was set slightly further S than the E one, and the angle formed between the two at S was occupied by the smallest chamber. From the description and plan provided by Westropp, it is not possible to classify this monument with certainty. It may have consisted of a group of cist-graves or of an unclassified megalithic tomb. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 37. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 3 August 2013 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 6/1932). - KE042-045: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE042-045----. Situated in low-lying pastureland about 1/2 mile from the SW shoreline of Smerwick Harbour, this souterrain was inspected in 1979 by Manning (OPW) at which time the remains consisted of a low, irregularly-shaped oblong mound containing traces of a passage and 2 chambers. The mound, composed of stones and some clay and apparently man-made, measured c. 18m E-W x 10m N-S and rose 1 to 1.5m above the general field level. Leading S from the NW edge of the mound was a short stretch of open passage, c. 2m long x .6m wide. The side walls were constructed with upright stones, c. 0.5m high, along the base with drystone walling above this to a total height of .8 to .9m. This passage opened into a chamber, destroyed before the site was inspected, and a 2nd chamber lay to the E. The original entrance may have been located where the passage met the edge of the mound. Small deposits of cockle and periwinkle shells were found in the mound. Also found was part of the upper disc of a rotary quern with a raised moulding around the central perforation and 'Kerry dressing' on the underside, both features typical of the Kerry quern (Caulfield 1969, 72). The monument has changed little since 1979 though the drystone walling of the passage has mostly collapsed. W of the site, at a distance of c. 20 to 30m, extensive traces of old field walls and a house site of uncertain, though possibly post-medieval date, were noted. Little trace of these survives now, possibly as a result of land reclamation. However, 8 to 9m W of the souterrain, the remains of a semi-circular enclosure, of uncertain date and function, abut the S side of an E-W field boundary. An internal area, 13.8m E-W and 10.6m N-S, is enclosed by a low, stony bank now considerably gapped and no more than .3 to .4m high. It may have continued N of the boundary but that field has been reclaimed and no surface remains are evident. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 753. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Ulligadrevil/Ulaidh an Draghbháil: This site consists of an ovate enclosure within which are the possible remains of hut sites and graves. In the same field, to W of the enclosure, are numerous mounds and banks some of which may also define hut-sites. The remains of another hut [KE042-046----] are situated in the field to N, at a distance of about 100m from the enclosure. It is difficult to classify this site from a surface inspection alone but it may have been a ringfort which was later re-used as a calluragh burial ground. The enclosure, measuring 34m N-S x 29m E-W internally, is defined by a low, grass-grown stony bank c. 0.8m high and c. 3m wide. This bank has been badly damaged along the N and NE sectors where a field wall skirts the enclosure. There is a 1.2m wide entrance gap at SW, defined on either side by stones on edge and by prostrate stones which may formerly have stood upright. There is a 2nd possible entrance feature at SE, defined by an unusual arrangement of 4 upright stones, .7 to 1.2m high, with a .35m high stone blocking the entrance gap. The stony banks occupying the E part of the interior may represent the remains of at least 1 hut-site. It is also possible that some of the stones on edge in this area, .13 to .55m high, are the remains of slab-lined graves. The presence of graves in the interior is also suggested by the name of the site, Ulaidh: tomb; Draghbhail: English dry-wall. The interior is said to have been under cultivation about 50 years ago (local information) and other features may have been destroyed at that time. Numerous stony mounds and banks and prostrate stones and stones on edge occupy the area directly W of the enclosure. Some of these do not form any recognisable pattern. However, abutting the exterior of the enclosure bank, directly S of the SW entrance, is what appears to be the remains of a rectangular house measuring c. 7.7 x 2.2m internally, its walls reduced to low stony banks with some stones set on edge perhaps representing the wall faces. The north-westernmost mound also seems to represent the remains of a hut, similar to that in the field to N. The mound is composed of a mixture of stones and earth and measures c. 24m x 23m in maximum extent. The depressed interior measures 6.3m x 7m. There is a possible entrance gap at N but this does not cut through the lower portion of the mound. The hut site in the field to N of the enclosure is roughly circular in outline, measuring 5.95m in diameter internally, and its wall is for the most part represented by a stone and earth bank with sections of the outer wall face visible to a maximum height of .4m. Ill-defined entrance gap at W. Abutting the N side of the hut is a small sub-rectangular yard. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne.
