Internal diam. 30m NW-SE This bivallate rath is located on fairly steep N sloping land, on the W side of a bog-covered valley drained by a tributary of the Ferta river. The two banks and an intervening fosse enclose a subcircular area and are densely overgrown. The inner bank averages 4.3m wide and 2.3m high above the base of the fosse. Short stretches of a drystone masonry revetment survive in places on its inner face. The flat-bottomed fosse, now heavily silted-up and in part waterlogged, averages 3m wide. The outer bank is less substantial than the inner one and varies from 1m to 3m high above the fosse and from .6m to 2m high above external ground level. It is flat-topped and averages 3.3m wide. It is abutted by several later field boundaries, and sections of drystone revetment walling present are probably associated with the latter. The original entrance may be located at E. Here the gap through the inner bank is 2m wide, and drystone walling revets its N side to a height of .6m. The corresponding gap through the outer bank splays from an inner width of 2.2m to 4.5m at its outer side. The fosse in this area has been disturbed, and though shallow, there is no clearly defined causeway. A collapsed souterrain (KE080-020001-) occurs in the NW quadrant of the rath's interior and is evidenced by two rectangular sunken areas, up to .7m deep. These indicate that a passage was aligned NW-SE, and traces of slightly corbelled walling are exposed in the sides of one of the depressions. Ua Riain records an incursion into the souterrain by a 'party of local boys' who discovered eight 'rooms' before retreating (1927). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 492. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. This site is located in poorly drained pasture on the NE slopes of Keelnagore, overlooking an extensive tract of bog to N. A large squat standing stone, partly incorporated into a field boundary, stands 2.1m high and measures 1.4m x 1.1m at base; NNE-SSW. Its sides gradually taper towards a flat top. Leaning against it at S is a stone which measures 2.7m long and averages .59m wide and .28m thick. Only one 'Gallaun' is indicated on the OS maps. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 127. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. No visible trace survives of the 'Gallaun' marked at this location on the first edition of the OS map. A field boundary now runs across this point, and the stone may have been removed during its construction. It was situated on sloping pastureland which overlooks extensive-tracts of bog to N, and was located approximately 100m ESE of a pair of standing stones (KE080-022----). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 231. Not marked on the OS maps, this very ruined enclosure, within which is a souterrain, is located on the high E slopes of Keelnagore mountain. The much denuded enclosing element defines a circular area, 14m in diameter. This survives as a bank of stony composition, 1.4m high, along the NE sector, and elsewhere as a line of boulders. At SW, beneath heavy overgrowth, is a short stretch of coursed drystone walling, .6m high and 2.7m in length. The interior of the site is terraced, and a scattering of slabs and boulders occur in its N half. Two slabs, set on edge, mark the entrance to a souterrain located in the NE quadrant of the interior of the enclosure. The entrance measures .75m wide x .45m high, and leads into a 3m long passage that runs to W. The passage is built of coursed drystone walling and is roofed with lintels. It averages 1.25m high and 1.1m wide, and an even spread of stones lines its floor. Abutting the S side of the passage are three upright slabs. A narrow creepway occurs in the W end-wall and is formed of two jambs and a lintel. Measuring .56m high and .38m wide, it is .55m long and gives access to a second passage, aligned N-S. This passage, with drystone walls and roofed with lintels, is c. 4m long but its S end is blocked by a mound of earth and stone. A possible air-vent is located at its N end. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 724. Date of upload: 29 July 2013 This drystone-built souterrain, not marked on the OS maps, occurs on a level terrace on the upper NE facing slopes of Keelnagore. A short distance to S is a semicircular ring of boulders, and to E is an 8m long, ill-defined, bank. These features may indicate that an above-ground structure was associated with the souterrain, but their poor state of preservation precludes classification. The souterrain consists of two rectangular chambers linked by a creepway. The entrance to the first chamber faces NE and measures .75m x .44m; two slabs set on edge stand outside it at SE. The chamber extends W for a distance of 3m. It is 1.25m high and 1.1m wide and its drystone walls are roughly built and capped with lintels; three upright slabs abut the S side-wall. The creepway which connects it with the second chamber occurs in its W end-wall; it measures .55m x .4m x .55m long. The second chamber is aligned roughly N-S. A small air-vent is located in the N end-wall, close to roof level. The chamber is at least 5m long, but its S end is blocked by in accumulation of fill. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 862. Close to the summit of Keelnagore, on its E side in open mountain terrain. A roughly built circular hut with an entrance passage at NE. A lintelled chamber at N apparently precedes the hut.
