Internal diam. 27.7m N-S This univallate rath is located in reclaimed land on the bank of the N tributary of the Ferta river, and commands an impressive view along the river valley to SW. Only the W half of the site is extant and this is best preserved along the N sector. The fosse measures 4.7m wide and .5m deep below external ground level. The bank, of earth and stone, rises to a maximum external height of 3.25m, has a basal width of 3.4m and falls 1.5m internally. Intermittent stretches of drystone walling revet its inner face. At W, where it is 2.3m high, this walling displays a slight batter. However, some of the walling appears to be of recent construction. Trees have been planted in the interior of the site obscuring any possible features. A lintelled lamb shelter abuts the site externally at NE. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 496. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Internal diam. 21.5m N-S, 23m E-W Situated a short distance E of KE070-029---- and on the opposite bank of the Ferta river, this much disturbed univallate rath is located in rough grazing land on a fairly steep N facing slope. There is no trace of a fosse and the bank has a maximum external height of 1.85m at N. Only in the SE sector does it rise above the level of the interior of the site; here it reaches a maximum height of 1.45m and has a basal width of 3.1m. Eroded gaps occur in the bank at NW, NE and SE, but the gap at S, 1.1m wide, may mark the location of the original entrance. A stony mound with a central depression is located in the SW quadrant of the rath's interior. It measures 6m x 4.65m in overall dimensions and may represent the remnants of a hut (KE070-030001-). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 497. Located on the S side of a tributary of the Ferta river, and commanding an extensive view SW to Valencia Harbour, the exposed surface of this cross-inscribed section of rock outcrop measures 2.07m x 1.lm The small linear Latin cross, .17m high, rises from a triangular expansion at its lower shaft. Close to the cross are inscribed the words 'DO NOT STIR’. The nature of the site is unclear and it is locally described as a mass-rock. In rough boggy pasture, on the S side of the valley of the Ferta River. This field system, which was identified and recorded by Harte (2002), covers an area measuring 1.1km E-W x 800m N-S. The surviving linear and curvilinear walls protrude above the surface of the bog and are generally in an overgrown and collapsed condition. The walls (av. T 1.04m; av. H 1.03m) mainly comprise slabs set upright and at right angles to the line of the wall. Some boulders, smaller rubble and angular stones were also noted. In some cases outcropping rock has been incorporated into the walls. The system comprises fields of various shapes and sizes. There are eight hut sites (KE070-122----, KE070-124----, KE070-125----, KE070-126----, KE070-127----, KE070-128----, KE070-130----, KE070-131----) and a possible hut site (KE070-123----) within this field system. A cross-inscribed stone (KE070-044----) and a mass-rock (KE070-044001-) lie immediately to the N of the field system. Within a field system (KE070-119----). The remains of a circular hut site (2.7m x 2.6m) defined by a drystone wall (T 0.7m; H 1.4m) comprising flat rubble slabs, laid horizontally. The hut site is built against outcropping rock at W. The E portion of the hut site has been damaged by a drain. The present access is through a breach along the E arc. An upright stone adjacent to the breach may have served as a jambstone and may form part of the original entrance. Apart from the N portion of the interior, the internal ground level is lower than the external ground level. There is an annexe (L 2m; Wth 1.2m) of drystone construction to the NW of the hut site. Access to the annexe from the hut site is via a flat-lintelled doorway (Wth 0.57m; H 0.67m) in the NW wall of the hut site. External access to the annexe is through a now blocked-up entrance at its NW side. (Harte 2002, 62-3, 147-8, no. The original entrance, comprising a flat-lintelled doorway (Wth 0.76m; H 0.64m), is at WSW and is now filled with rubble. The entrance may have accessed a porch. The present entrance to the hut site is via a gap along the SE arc. A field wall extends from the W arc of the hut site. A fallen stone on the N side of the entrance may bear some inscribed markings. Within a field system (KE070-119----). The remains of a square hut site (4m x 4m) defined by drystone walls (T 0.65m; H 0.94m). The hut site comprises three sections. The main compartment (4m x 3m) consists of loosely packed rubble which is built on top of outcropping rock along the E wall. This masonry in this room is largely collapsed. The present entrance is through a gap in the E wall. The original entrance (Wth 1m) in the W side of the N wall is now blocked up. The W wall extends (L 0.7m) beyond the NW corner. This portion of wall, coupled with the jamb of a doorway (Wth 0.75m) in the W end of the N wall, indicates the location of a porch. A doorway (Wth 0.4m; H 0.94m) in the W wall of the main compartment leads to a chamber (2m x 1m) at W. The W portion of the hut site has undergone alterations in the past. (Harte 2002, 149, no. The interior of the hut site appears to be at a lower level than the external ground level at S. The main entrance is situated in the W wall. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
