An Seana-theampall: This is locally reputed to be the site of a church and it is so named on the OS maps. However, An Seabhac referred to it as a ceallúnach burial ground. Neither of these classifications is supported by the present form of the site which appears to be simply a natural, wooded hollow, a maximum of 3m deep. It does not appear to have changed much since the early 19th century when it was described as 'a hole about 6 feet (1.8m) deep and 12 (3.65m) in diameter'. A fragment of a building was previously noted at the inner end of the hollow and it was suggested that the site may have been a destroyed ringfort and souterrain (Browne, Armstrong and Macalister 1911, 50). Internal diam. 28m N-S, 20.2m E-W A univallate rath situated in an elevated position on the E slopes of the valley of the Finglas river. A small river flows W about 50m N of the site. The oval interior slopes gently downhill to W and is enclosed by an earthen bank up to 1.8m high externally and 1.3m internally. The latter has been levelled in the SSW sector and a field fence skirts the enclosure here immediately outside the line of the bank. At NE a 4.8m long stretch of the inner face is revetted with drystone walling which stands to a height of 1.1m. A number of small stones visible elsewhere along the bank suggest that the facing may formerly have been more extensive. Six breaks through the E half of the bank are probably secondary. A 4m wide gap at NNW probably marks the original entrance. The former presence of an external fosse is suggested by a slight depression skirting the outer edge of the bank and by the presence of a large number of Yellow Flags (Iris pseudacirus) growing in a 3.5m wide band outside the bank. A 5.5m wide break in the band, outside the entrance at NNW, may indicate the location of a causeway across the fosse. The interior is occupied by a series of cultivation ridges. Internal diam. c. 27.5m This univallate rath is situated on a steep NW facing slope on the E side of the valley of the Finglas river. It commands an excellent view over the entire valley and through the valley entrance as far as Tralee Bay and the Magharees Peninsula. Though constructed on a steep slope, the interior is relatively level, having been scarped up on the downslope side. The condition of the enclosing bank and fosse varies considerably. The bank survives well along most of the E half, from S to NE, where it is c. 3.5m wide at base and a maximum of 1.9m high internally and 1.2m externally. A short stretch of drystone masonry adheres to the inner face of the bank at ENE. In the NNE and NNW sectors the bank has been considerably disturbed by the cultivation ridges which occupy the interior and the internal height is only very slight. In the W quadrant the bank has been levelled, but the outline of the enclosure is indicated by a 2m high drop from the interior to the external ground level. In the SSW sector a low, narrow bank, 1.75m wide and .6m high, encloses the site. This is faced internally and externally with rough drystone walling and is markedly different from the remainder of the bank; it is probably relatively modern though it may follow the line of the original bank. The fosse is present around the E half of the site only and is 2.75 to 3m wide and up to 1.2m deep. No clearly defined entrance is preserved; 2 narrow breaks at NE may simply be animal tracks. A low earthen bank, which follows the curve of the ringfort bank in the SW quadrant, at a distance of c. 4m, appears to be the remains of an old field fence. The above description is derived from J. - KE037-046: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE037-046----. This is probably the site of the destroyed cashel recorded by Browne et al (1911, 47). It consists of an ill-defined level platform, on the otherwise steeply sloping E side of Glenfais. It measures roughly 18m in maximum dimension, and its downslope side is enclosed by a stony bank, up to 1.5m high, which may represent the remains of the cashel wall.
