Internal diam. 12.8m N-S, 14.4m E-W The severely denuded remains of this circular caher are located in rough pasture on the lower SW slopes of Cahernageeha mountain, overlooking Darrynane Bay to S. The foundation courses of the wall, drystone-faced externally and internally, are largely concealed beneath sod-cover and are no longer traceable at E. The enclosing element is represented only by a stony band at S, where it retains a maximum external height on its downslope side of 1.5m. It has an average width of 1.6m. No definite features were identified in the caher's uneven interior. An opening to a souterrain (KE106-049001-) is located in the bank of the caher at S. This measures .75m x .65m, and gives access to a lintelled passage with sides of earth which extends N for a distance of 3.3m; this is 1.15m high and .9m wide. Close to the entrance a vertically disposed slab, wedged between two roofing lintels, hangs down into the passage. At the W side of the N end of the passage is a short tunnelled creepway, .7m wide by .4m high, which leads into a large earth-tunnelled sub-rectangular chamber. Another small, tunnelled creepway was noted on the W side of this chamber, but access to it was not possible due to flooding. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 572. Internal diam. 21.4m N-S, 22.7m E-W. This poorly preserved caher, located on a rocky knoll on the lower S slopes of Cahernageeha mountain, is separated by a stream from the larger Caherdaniel stone fort (KE106-063001-) which is located 130m to E. Its enclosing wall is severely denuded and much collapse occurs internally and along the sides of the knoll. Its stone facing is only visible intermittently, and appears to have been composed internally of thin slabs and externally of larger block-like slabs set in random courses. The wall averages 3.5m wide and is preserved to a maximum internal height of 1.4m at N. The level interior of the caher features a large scatter of loose stone and low irregular stony mounds which form no discernable pattern. A modern stone wall occurs in its NE quadrant. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 573. National Monument No. 346. This ogham stone lay partly buried on Darrynane strand (see KE106-114----) prior to being erected in its present position by the OPW in the 1940s. Of sandstone grit, it now stands 2.1m high and measures .5m x .36m at base. The severely eroded inscription runs up the sinister and down the dexter angles and was read by Macalister (1945, 214-5, no. 220) as: ANM LLATIGNI MAQ M[I]N[E]RC M[UCOI] Q[...]CI. Only three scores of Macalister's double L are apparent, and the first I and G are poorly preserved. The following N and I are not visible, while only the Q in the following word is apparent. The I, N and E of the third word are not visible and only the terminals of the scores representing R survive. None of the inscription recorded by Macalister on the stone's dexter angle is now apparent. (O’Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, no. 913) This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. This monument was initially identified as rock art by Aoibheann Lambe in 2014. Incorporated into a drystone field boundary, in improved pasture (23m OD), on a level area of ground of an otherwise gentle ENE-facing slope. A smooth and fractured sandstone boulder (dims. 2.10m NW-SE; 1.90m NE-SW; max. H 0.70m at SE) having a subrectangular decorated surface (dims. 1.30m NW-SE; 0.70m NE-SW) which is weathered and eroded, bearing a number of faint motifs. A cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 12cm N-S; 9cm E-W; ring Wth 1.5-2cm; D 2mm; cup diam. 6cm; D 14mm) at E, has a faint yet traceable ring SE->W->N; This is a very deep cupmark that appears further eroded by the elements and its interior is rough but made smooth by the presence of lichens. Three potential cupmarks (diam. 6-7cm; D 10-17mm) form a linear arrangement along SW side of stone. These are extremely weathered and very deeply eroded. In rough pasture (45m OD), on a broad, elevated area of ground, on a gentle SSE-facing slope. Surrounded by low hills and mountains; good view of Cahernageeha Mountain to N and Caherdaniel Fort (KE106-063001-) is clearly visible to SE. An earthfast boulder (dims. 2.50m N-S; 1.60m E-W; max. H 0.50m at S) having a subrectangular decorated surface (dims. 0.45m N-S; 0.45m E-W) to N and a similar shaped decorated surface (dims. 0.60m N-S; 0.80m E-W) to S. The decorated surfaces are interrupted by two loose field clearance boulders (dims. 1.00m x 0.70m and (dims. 0.85m x 0.60m) at S and N, respectively which may obscure other motifs; Sod covering E side of stone may also cover decorative elements. The motifs upon the N decorated surface are very faint and consist of a cluster of eight cupmarks (range diam. 3.5-5cm; D 3mm), a partial cup-and-ring motif and a pockmark (diam. 1cm; D 2mm) adjacent to E. The motifs upon the S decorated surface are very faint and consist of a cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 16cm x 14cm; ring Wth 1.5-2cm; D 2-3mm; cup diam. 4.5cm; D 4mm) with a linear groove (L 20cm, Wth 1.5-2cm; D 3mm) extending from ring at E and a second linear groove (L 36cm) which extends from ring to WNW; A cupmark (diam. 3cm; D 3mm) is located 9cm to WNW of terminus and a second cupmark is to SSE. A partial cup-and-ring (overall dims. 15cm N-S; 10cm E-W; ring Wth 1.5cm; D 1-2mm; cup diam. 4cm; D 3mm) is located to E, having a very faint ring N>E->S. A linear groove (L 27cm) extends from cup at E side and continues under the sod; A parallel groove is located adjacent to N and S. A partial cup-and-ring motif (overall dims. 5cm N-S; 7cm E-W; ring Wth 1cm; D 1-2mm; cup diam. 2.5cm; D 3mm) is located to E side of decorated surface. It has a faint ring present W->N->E. In improved pasture (44m OD), on a SE-facing slope. Surrounded by low hills and mountains with good views of Cahernageeha Mountain to N and Caherdaniel Fort (KE106-063001-) to E. A smooth and fractured sandstone (dims. 1.60m N-S; 2.00m E-W; max. H 0.70m) having two decorated surfaces. Motifs not readily visible upon this aspect due to large sandstone boulder (dims. 1.65m N-S; 2.2m E-W; H 1.7m) resting against it at an angle. Motifs not easily accessible for identification or measurement, as the angle between the rock art boulder and the stone resting against it, is too narrow. Surface of the rock art stone is uneven, however the presence of some cupmarks can be confirmed. The decorative element upon the flat top surface (dims. 0.10m N-S; 0.10m E-W) consists of a single cupmark (diam. 6.5cm; D 5mm).
