This site, situated above the bay of Cunnihish S of Doon Head, lies on the edge of a steep slope 200 feet high. On the S side of this promontory lies another promontory fort known as Stack's (KE004-018----). This site can be described as a crescent-shaped fort which consists of two well-defined banks and an intervening fosse. The outer bank has been defaced by the erection of later field fences. The fort measures a maximum of 92m externally E-W and 55m N-S. The fosse is wide and deep, though to the SE, where the causeway leads in towards the entrance, it is more shallow; here it measures about 3.2m deep, while elsewhere it ranges from 3.4m to 4.5m deep. The width of the fosse to the E measures 4m, while to the W it measures 4.6m. The inner bank is high and steep and ranges in width at the base from c 14m to 18m; it rises between 5.3m and 5.7m above the fosse, and 1.8m and 3.5m above the interior. The maximum internal diameter measures 36m N-S and 50m E-W. In the N sector of the interior is a mound measuring c12m x 3.6m internally, and this could possibly suggest a souterrain. Immediately S of this is an oval mound measuring internally 7m x 4.6m. On the 1841 OS map, 'cave' is marked on the E side of the outer ring. On the interior side of the outer bank, just at the cliff edge, an opening is discernible, revealing stonework which possibly suggests an entrance/exit to a souterrain (KE004-011001-). The entrance to the interior of the fort measures 3m at the inner bank; there is a causeway leading to this entrance which measures c11m wide and over 25m long. Internal diameter 27m N-S This circular univallate rath has been cut on its E side by a fieldbank running N-S. The enclosing earthen bank is low and wide, measuring 1.2m externally and c 1m internally. Slight traces remain of an exterior fosse which is mainly distinguishable to the NNE; elsewhere it is indicated by the growth of rushes. It measures 1.8m wide and .6m deep. In the ESE sector of the interior are the remains of a possible hut site (KE004-013001-), 5m x 7m, and stones are evident around this mound. Enclosing this mound from the NW through W to S is a bank c 1.6m wide and .6m high. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Internal diameter 38m N-S, 37m E-W Situated SE of the now disused Roman Catholic church at Doon, this site has an excellent view of the surrounding countryside. This circular univallate rath has a well-defined enclosing bank that rises to a maximum of 3.8m high externally and 3m above the interior. The fosse is wide and deep and encloses the bank from the N through E to SW; it measures 1m wide and 1m deep. The entrance, 4m in width, lies to the S. A modern concrete bridge crosses the fosse and leads into the entrance. Westropp (1909) was of the opinion that this rath was of two periods, 'the lower of drift clay, the upper of light-brown earth over a layer of stones 1-2 feet thick'. N of this site lies the Crescent Fort (KE004-011----), while to the S another promontory fort and Pookeenee Castle can be seen (KE004-019001-) and (KE004-019002-). This site is situated on a headland just above the sea stacks and arches at Carrignaweelaun Bay. Only a tiny section of this promontory survives today; the interior has suffered massive erosion and destruction by the sea. Originally it would appear to have been defended by a double bank and fosse. The outer bank measures 11m long, but has been very much defaced by later field fences. The bank measures 3m above the fosse; the fosse measures 2.5m wide and 15m long. The inner bank rises to a maximum of 2m over the fosse. This site is known as Stack's promontory fort. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 107. Situated S of Doon Bay. The bank and fosse of this promontory fort, which measures c70m in length and runs slightly convex to the land, contains the later construction of Pookeenee Castle (KE004-019002-). The promontory itself is 140m N-S and 92m E-W. In the SW sector of this large promontory is a blow-hole named 'Poulaninneen', Poll na nIníonach (hole of the daughters): 'a deep hole in the land which the sea has a subterraneous passage, into which the inhabitants of Pookeenee old castle clifted his nine daughters dreading their chastity would be violated and put an end to their existence' (OSNB, 1841, 47). A fieldbank cuts through this site in a NW-SE direction. No internal features were to be noted. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 106. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Pookeenee Castle (Na Púícíní - the little huts), which consists of a small tower, a wall and turret, were additions across the neck of an earlier promontory (KE004 -019001-), and was probably constructed around the late 15th century. Westropp (1909) states that the tower, which is situated at the S end of the wall, had 'three little vaulted rooms in the basement'. All that remains now is the central room, 3m x 2.3m, with a defaced door and a small slit window to the W. Westropp also mentions that to the NW of the central vault, stopping short of the window, were traces of a wood and earth hall that had been attached to the tower. No surface trace of this can be seen today. A wall extends N of the tower for c 13m, where it ends in a gateway. Just N of this again are the remains of a turret, 9.2m wide x 5.2m long. Its NE angle has been undercut by as much as 2m. The walls E and W measure 5.2m long, 3.8m-4m high and 1m thick. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. No surface trace of this site remains today. However, according to Westropp (1909) 'a small earthwork or house site is marked by a high ring of "flaggers" (yellow iris). This well is marked on the 1840-41 and 1915 OS maps as 'Toberreendoney' (Tobar Rí an Domhnaigh - well of the king of Sunday). Situation and Description: This was originally a small well at the side of the road which leads down to 'Ladies strand', Ballybunnion. However, all that remains today is a trickle of water; the County Council closed up the well about 25 years ago. Rounds/Legends/Offerings: (a) A trout lives in it. (b) The well moved from the other side of the road when clothes were washed in it. Folklore collected from Ballybunnion School recorded the following tradition abut Sunday's Well: 'Situated in Doon West in Doon Glenn on bottom of cliff about one hundred yards from the shore. This well is supposed to have been profaned on a Saturday night. It is supposed that about one hundred years ago a woman washed clothes in the holy well and that on the following Sunday morning the well was at the opposite side of the road or pathway hence the name Sunday's Well. No rounds are paid since then. The rounds were paid around the well as it is now situated. If the story of the well moving is right rounds were paid in front of the well not round it though as circle the original well a slightly longer but almost identical journey should be made. The well is now used for domestic purposes. The water of this well is always almost ice cold. There is no bush of any description near this well. It is said there is a small trout in this well' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0401, Page 002;https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4666574/4663206). Ó Danachair (1958, 160) recorded the following details about this well; 'A small well at the side of the road which leads down to the "Ladies' Strand", Ballybunion. Not visited now but known to have been a holy well formerly. Legends: A holy trout lives in the well. The well moved from the other side of the road when clothes were washed in it'. Possible promontory fort described in 2002 as follows; 'A roughly triangular headland, now in use as a quarry, shows signs of once having been cut off at the narrow isthmus by an earthen bank and outer fosse. A modern earthen field boundary runs parallel to the earlier features. The southwest-facing headland measures 120m long and no internal features are visible. The undulating bank and fosse close to the southern cliff edge at the neck are the only features hinting at an early fortification of the headland. The immediate area consists of fertile undulating pasture. The cliffs descend nearly vertically to the shingle shore below and the sea is inaccessible from within. A natural sink hole occupies the south-western point' (Casey 2002, 43, no. N). Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) - Doon Catholic Church, church/chapel, 1825–1835, Regional interest, registry number 21300407, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=KE®no=21300407.
