In a children's burial ground (KE057-064001-). The remains of a rectangular church (13.45m E-W; c. 4.85m N-S; T 0.95m) built of sandstone. The remains consist of the ivy clad E gable (H c. 4-5m) with a short return of the N and S walls. The central E window comprises a single ogee-headed light (Wth 0.16m; H 1.7m) with hollowed-out spandrels. It has a splayed embrasure and is covered by a segmental arch. There is a breach (Wth 0.85m) in the wall at the S end. The short return of the S wall (H c. 2.3m) contains a lintelled wall-press. The W end of the S wall is low (H 0.4m) and earth covered. The short return of the N wall (H 1.8m) is incorporated into an earthen field boundary. The W gable survives as a low wall (H 0.4m). A mature tree occupies the E side of the interior. In the 1940s it was recorded that the 'white friars' said Mass here (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). A farm trackway extends along the S and W sides of the church. To the E of the church there is a spring well (c. 2m E-W; c. 1m N-S; D 0.45m) defined on the N and E sides by a stone wall, covered in earth and vegetation. A stream emerges from the well and flows to the S. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. In pasture, on a S-facing slope, overlooking the valley of the Laune River. This rectangular children's burial ground (26m E-W; 15m N-S) is indicated on the 1895 OS 6-inch map by a dotted line. The ruins of Dungeel Church (KE057-064----) are indicated on the same map, immediately inside the N boundary of the burial ground. The intermittent remains of a scarp (H 0.1-0.3m) is evident on the S and W sides of the burial ground, where the dotted line is indicated on the 1895 OS 6-inch map. A farm trackway crosses the burial ground on an E-W axis. A D-shaped kerbed area (2m N-S; H 0.35m) with a straight N side (L 3.4m) abuts the S wall of the church and is immediately N of the trackway. The remains of three roughly D-shaped raised areas (dims. of the largest: 7m E-W; 5.5m N-S; H 0.2m; dims. of the smallest: 3.6m E-W; 3m N-S; H. 0.45m) defined by kerbing and a scarp, occur immediately to the S of the trackway. According to Dennehy (1997, 159), these areas are believed to be the remains of the 'ceallúnach' which was last used 40 years ago for the burial of stillborn and unbaptised children, burials taking place here during the night. In a farmyard, on the W side of a small ridge, c. 250m NE of the Laune River. This rath is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). On the 1895 OS 6-inch map only the E half is indicated, incorporated into the field boundary N-NE and by a hachured scarp NE-S. The remains consist of an arc of bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.7m to the level of the yard; ext. H 0.9m) N-NE, faced internally with modern blocks and externally with recent drystone walling. A lane skirts the bank to the N and a farmyard lies immediately to the S. The W half of rath is occupied by an abandoned vernacular house. This is probably 'Doongeel Fort' situated towards the S of the townland and which had 'a house erected on it' which was recorded in the 1840s (OSNB, Killorglin, no. 1, 13). In pasture, on a low rise, c. 200m W of the Laune River. This rath is not visible at ground level. It is indicated on the 1846 and 1895 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m). According to local information, it was levelled in the 1970s/80s. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. In pasture, on a dry area above the floodplain of the Laune River. The rath is indicated on the 1846 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) while on the 1895 OS 6-inch map only the N and E arcs are depicted. The remains of a D-shaped area (dim. c. 20m E-W) is evident which is defined by a denunded scarp (H c. 2.2m) N-S and by a linear N-S field boundary at W (L c. 34m). The remaining surface of the rath is heavily eroded and poached by cattle. There is evidence of recent soil excavation from the area.
