H 1.5m), totally obscured by dense overgrowth. It is indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on the 1846 and 1893-4 OS 6-inch maps and is visible as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on an aerial photograph (OSAP, 3748-47) taken in 1983. In undulating pasture, to the E of Killarney and c. 450m W of the Flesk River. A circular area (27m N-S; 26.6m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.2m) with a flattened top, largely obscured by overgrowth and retained externally by a stone field wall E-WSW. There is a long slope on the internal face of the bank. The level interior is slightly raised and in pasture. The entrance (Wth 2.5m) is at E and there is also a break (Wth 1.2m) in the bank at ENE. A field boundary abuts the bank at SE. In pasture, on the SW bank of the Flesk River. The overgrown remains of a rectangular structure (18m NE-SW; 5.6m SE-NW) indicated by the lower courses of a rubble stone wall (T 1.05m; H 1.5m) with lime mortar, best preserved at SE. There is a depression in the interior at the S end. According to local information, this is part of a friary that was dismantled a number of years ago. A wall (T 0.55m; H 1m) runs to the SW from the river bank for c. 34m, passing within 2m of the NW side of the friary. A door ope (Wth 1m; H 2.2m) at the centre of this wall leads NW (L 10m) to a rectangular structure (2.5m N-S; 2m E-W) with stone walls (T 0.6m; H 1.8m), which is known locally as 'the flower house'. Two other cells described in the 1940s (ITA) in the immediate vicinity were not located. Stepping-stones occur in the river to the E and gave access across the river to a children's burial ground (KE067-071----) which is known as the 'friar's plot' (ITA). The Franciscans found a safe sanctuary here from the mother house at Muckross Abbey, up until 1780 (ITA). Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 256) refer to Faghbawn as a place of refuge for the friars. In pasture, on a N-facing slope and c. 450m SW of a bend in the Flesk River. A raised circular area (diam. 32m) defined by a low discontinuous bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.5m) with intervening short stretches of scarp, especially along the S arc. The external face of the bank is being eroded at N. Intermittent faint traces of a depression externally may indicate a fosse. The interior, in pasture, slopes down gently to the N. There is a cattle break (Wth 1.2m) in the bank at W.
