In rough hill grazing on a S-facing slope overlooking Derrynane Bay and the mouth of Kenmare Bay. This feature is depicted similar to an enclosure on the first edition (1846) OS 6-inch map. A stream extends from it is a pond. There are many loose stones in this area and two turf 'láthairs' (a stone base for stacking turf). This was identified as a turf láthair. This circular enclosure, which measures 24.4m N-S x 23.4m E-W internally, is located on sloping pasture on the S side of Farraniaragh mountain and overlooks Darrynane Harbour. It is recorded in the OSNB as a 'large fort and burial place for children' (Kilcrohane, 11). The drystone enclosing wall is well-defined, though only its lower courses are preserved. It is 1.85m wide and is formed with coursed slabs that are flanked internally and externally with upright slabs. A series of slabs set on edge define a 2m long entrance passage, 1.3m wide, at SW. The foundations of a circular hut interrupt the enclosing element at NNW. Its walls, of drystone masonry, are 1.5m wide and enclose an area 5.2m x 4.7m. A .7m wide entrance is located at SSE. A second hut, subcircular in plan, is also contained within the enclosing element at NE and has an internal diameter of 4.3m. The wall, .9m wide, is coursed to a height of .5m and is revetted externally by slabs set on edge. The burial area occupies the complete interior of the site. Numerous small uninscribed upright slabs and quartz blocks are scattered throughout it, and are generally arranged in N-S rows. They average .3m high. There are two conspicuous groupings of slabs: the first occurs close to the enclosing element at S and occupies a roughly rectangular area, 2.3m N-S 3.3m E-W, which is delineated by slabs set on edge; the second is almost centrally located and consists of an irregular clustering of four slabs that average .5m high and .5m wide. Internal diam. 19m N-S, 19.6 E-W This severely denuded circular caher is located on a terrace on the S slopes of Farraniaragh mountain, overlooking Darrynane Bay to S. Overgrowth conceals much of the site and collapse abuts the external face of its enclosing wall. This is constructed of drystone masonry, its inner and outer facing enclosing a rubble core. It is 1.3m wide and is preserved to a maximum height of 1.5m. A gap in the wall at SE, through which a trackway runs, may mark the location of the original entrance. The interior of the caher is filled with a scatter of loose stone, heavily concentrated in a rectangular area at E. This measures 3.7m x 3.5m, and may represent the foundations of a rectangular hut (KE106-051001-). A souterrain (KE106-051002-) is locally reputed to exist at this site, but its exact location could not be determined. Stone from the caher was used in the building of nearby houses (local information). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 584. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. The interior of the caher is filled with a scatter of loose stone, heavily concentrated in a rectangular area at E. This measures 3.7m x 3.5m, and may represent the foundations of a rectangular hut (KE106-051001-). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. This site is located midway between KE106-042---- and KE106-046---- and is known locally as a burial ground. It may have originally been a stone fort or an early ecclesiastical site. It is roughly circular in plan and is enclosed by a denuded stone wall. It measures 25.7m N-S x 23.7m E-W internally. The wall is best preserved at NW, where it consists of a rubble core faced internally and externally with coursed drystone masonry. It has a maximum internal height of 1.4m and averages 2.2m wide. A 1.65m wide entrance gap is located at SE; its S side is defined by two slabs, one upright and one on edge. The poorly preserved foundations of a circular hut abut the inner face of the enclosing element at SW; it has overall dimensions of 7.7m N-S x 8.6m E-W. Adjacent to this, at N, appears to be the lintelled ope to a blocked souterrain; this measures .85m x .45m. Occupying the N half of the interior of the site are three amorphous and two rectangular mounds that may cover graves. They are sod-covered and are composed of large quantities of stone, upright slabs and quartz. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
