Graveyard (KE079-072----) is located on the lower NE slopes of Kilbeg, Valencia Island, from which there are impressive views of Valencia Harbour. ‘Darnery’ church was included in the Papal Taxation Lists (1302-06) for the diocese of Ardfert (Cal Docs Ire, V, 298). It was not noted in the list of churches in the diocese in 1622 (TCD MS 2158, 94), and may have fallen into disrepair before this date. A reference to it in the Book of Survey and Distribution (c. 1650-60), however, seems to imply that it was still in use (Westropp 1912, 289). It was in ruins by the middle of the eighteenth century (Smith 1756, 38). Graveyard described in 2012 as follows; 'The graveyard has again substantially increased in size with a new section added at the E. The old burial ground is situated on steeply sloping rough ground and is difficult to negotiate due to the dense grass and general unkempt condition that mask over a thousand unhewn low gravemarkers on the sloping terrain. The grave plots in the lower limits of the old burial ground are laid out more evenly while the upslope area, especially around the limits of the ruined medieval church, contains all the tombs and a greater density and variety of burial. The entrance into the medieval old burial ground comprises twin-gates set between two robust rounded piers with pointed cement capping situated provided at the lower N limits of the old burial ground. The old burial ground in enclosed by a rubble sandstone wall with ‘soldier’ capping along the N perimeter and rounded rough cement capping on the S & W that is in general good order. An old disused step-stile is situated mid way along the S boundary wall. There are twenty tombs in Kilmore graveyard. Only four of the tombs have names while the rest are unknown. Interestingly, King states that the some of the Knights of Kerry whose seat was at Glanleam are interred in Kilmore, however there burial tomb was not discovered during this survey (King 1983). The vast majority of the tombs in Kilmore are house shaped, often large and with extended roofs while others conform to the strong box type. All the tombs are constructed with local split sandstone rubble and rendered albeit the render has now disappeared or partially disappeared from several. The tombs are all situated in the old burial ground only dispersed around the medieval church ruins [KE079-072001-]. There are five hundred and seventy (570) recorded named headstones in Kilmore graveyard. The older burial ground area at Kilmore is home to a massive and unique collection of local 19th century Valentia slate headstones and other associated grave furniture of slate including:- side, foot and cover stones. There are one thousand and twenty eight (1028) unhewn, unnamed gravemarkers in Kilmore, almost as many as recorded at Srugreana cemetery. Fourteen notched unhewn and unnamed gravemarkers were recorded in Kilmore graveyard. They are disposed around the interior of the older medieval graveyard. All of the notched headstones are simple grave markers of unhewn local slate and sandstone and have a distinct notch on the top of the stone. These headstones date from the medieval period and are the most basic cross form of burial marker recorded in graveyards. Notched headstones have been recorded by the writer in several graveyards in Kerry and indeed as far away as St. Colman’s Graveyard [GA009D014002-] on Inishbofin Island off the Connemara coast (Dunne 2007). A re-used notched gravestone was excavated by the writer from the base of a medieval slab-lined grave in Smerwick (Dunne 2008, 164-5). Five holed or perforated stones were recorded in Kilmore Graveyard in close proximity to the ruined medieval church. Holed or perforated pillar stones, where found, are generally associated with early ecclesiastical sites. They are not very common and not well understood. Some notable examples of perforated early cross inscribed pillars slabs and ogham stones at found at Reask, Kilfountain and Kilmalkedar on the Dingle Peninsula. However, the holed stones at Kilmore are small slate slabs with hour-glass perforations. As low slabs they are stylistically and morphologically at variance with the early medieval perforated pillar type and more closely associated with several other examples recently discovered by the writer at numerous graveyards in Kerry (Dunne 2010, 2011). Fourteen cross-slabs were recorded in Kilmore during the course of this survey all of which are situated in the upslope area of the old medieval burial ground. They are all rough, inscribed slabs. A small unhewn sandstone with unusual marks or letters inscribed on it is situated at the W limits of the old burial ground. Three of the motifs are similar to pheon or broad arrow marks but lack the vertical shaft and look like an overturned letter ‘K’. Two other marks look like this symbol Ⱦ or a stylized Chi-Rho while another looks like the letter ‘T’ in serif' (Dunne 2012, 4-10). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Medieval parish church ruins of the parish of Valencia (Valentia\Dairbhre\Oak Island) in the Diocese of Ardfert, in the townland of Farranreagh (An Fearann Riabhach), in the barony of Iveragh (Uíbh Ráthach). The fragmentary remains of this church are located in a graveyard (KE079-072----) on the lower NE slopes of Kilbeg, Valencia Island, from which there are impressive views of Valencia Harbour. ‘Darnery’ [Dairbhre] church was included in the Papal Taxation Lists (1302-06) for the diocese of Ardfert (Cal Docs Ire, V, 298). It was in ruins by the middle of the eighteenth century (Smith 1756, 38). The church is rectangular in plan, measuring 12m x 5.3m internally. Its walls survive to an average height of 1.55m, though in 1841 the side-walls were recorded as standing 11 feet (3.35m) high (OSL). Burials in the immediate vicinity of the church have resulted in a substantial rise in external ground level and in some distortion of its walls. A small portion of the S wall, near the W gable, has collapsed inwardly. The walls are built of roughly faced, split stone masonry with some white quartz facing, and are bonded by a gravelly mortar with marine shell inclusions. Near the W end of the N wall is a breach, c. 2m wide, which may represent the original entrance. The walls average 0.85m thick, though the exception to this is the E gable which is 2.05m in basal thickness and is offset inwardly by 1.1m about 0.7m up from the present external ground level. Church described in 2012 as follows; 'In 1615 the vicarages of Cahir, Kilmore and Kilkenan were valued at £4 and the incumbent was John Calhan (Callaghan?.) (Hickson 1874, 28). Kilmore is further recorded in the Regal Visitation Book of 1633 it is recorded that the incumbent vicar of Kilmore was Donell Ffanning whose ...’wyfe cometh not to Churche’ (ibid 31). By the mid 18th century the rectorial church of Kilmore was in ruins (Smith 1756, 38). In 1815 a new church, glebe house and a glebe of 56 acres were established a little to the N of the ruined medieval foundation with a grant of £500 from the Board of First Fruits (Lewis 1837, 673). Lewis goes on to state that the ..’ruins of the old church are still to be seen in the burial-ground, which is still used as a place of interment by the Catholic inhabitants’ (ibid). Kilmore Church was inspected by Thomas O’Connor in 1841 who stated that the side walls still stood to eleven feet [3.5m] but that the gables were reduced to two feet and were three feet [0.9m] thick (O’Donovan 1983, 163). Very little of the reduced medieval remains are discernible today due to the extent of the grass cover' (Dunne 2012, 3-4). It is delimited at its W edge by a severely eroded, curving earthen bank, which averages 1.1m high above external ground level. The N and E quadrants of the site contain large boulders, which appear to have been deposited during field clearance operations in the 1980s. Inscribed slab known as an Altazimuth Stone, described by Michael Egan of Knightstown as; 'In an area of ground known as the Pond Field, Knightstown, Valentia Island lies a Valentia Slate slab. The slab is in the shape of an equilateral triangle, each side measuring 42 inches(1.06m) x 3 inches (0.07m) thick. It has laid there since 1862. Engraved on that stone are the words GREAT EUROPEAN ARC OF LONGITUDE SITE OF THE POSITION OF THE ALTAZIMUTH USED IN THE DETERMINATION OF THE LONGITUDE OF VALENTIA IN 1862. There are only two such stones in the World, the second one being in the Ural Mountains, Russia. For hundreds of years navigation had the lines of latitude, the sun, moon, stars and the land (when they were within sight of such land) to navigate. When clear of land and without the sun, moon and stars, which would be quite regular, all that was left was Latitude which was in no way accurate for shipping, “dead reckoning” was not good enough. In other words ships were lost and only got to their destination if they were lucky. The vital missing piece were the lines of longitude. In 1714 the British Government brought in the Longitude Act offering £20,000 to anyone who would solve the longitude question. John Harrison invented a clock which would stand up to extreme heat, extreme cold and would not be affected by ship’s movement of any kind. There was then another problem, namely, where to place the prime meridian, the zero-degree longitude line. It was settled finally at Greenwich, London. When it was settled in Greenwich, the lines of longitude had to be sorted out going east and west and this is where the Valentia Altazimuth Stone comes in. It took time and knowledge to carry out the experiment using an instrument called the Altazimuth, derived from two words Altitude and Zenith (basically a telescope with readings vertically and horizontally) in conjunction with the stars and the underwater cable from Valentia Island to the UK at that time. When that experiment was successfully completed, a Stone, as mentioned above, was placed in that spot surrounded by a small concrete wall and iron railings. A similar experiment took place in the Ural Mountains, Russia. Valentia was used in that it was the furthest point west and the Ural Mountains was used as it was the most eastern point in Europe with an Altazimuth Stone, east and west, just two in the world thereby allowing the lines of longitude to be marked out'.
