This stone row, not marked on the OS maps, is located on gently sloping pasture, from where there are fine views over an expansive bog to Portmagee Channel and Valencia Island at N. It once comprised three stones, but one was removed to free a trapped animal (local information). The original position of the latter stone is unknown. The two remaining stones are aligned N-S. That at S stands 1.65m high, and measures 1.05m x .5m at base. The second stone, 1.45m to the N, stands 1.6m high and measures .7m x .45m at base (Ó Nualláin 1988, 252). Known locally as a ceallúnach, it consists of an approximately square platform, 10m N-S x 13m E-W, which is raised 1.6m above ground level on its downslope side. At N it is flush with the level of the field. A small group of upright slabs and a number of large recumbent slabs, 1.5m long and .5m wide on average, occur on the site. This wall is 1.6m wide and the enclosed area measures 8.5m N-S x 7.8m E-W. Occurring in the N half of the interior are the remains of a rectangular structure, 5.7m x 2.3m, and a number of small boulders and upright slabs. Children's Burial Ground: This approximately circular site is located on a slope which overlooks Ballinskelligs Bay to S. It survives as a level platform which is raised 1.5m above external ground level at S, and measures 20.3m x 16.5m. It appears to have been faced with drystone masonry at E and S, but this has largely collapsed. Very few of the uninscribed slabs in its stony interior remain in an upright position. However, there are some large upright slabs near the centre of the site, where a low, stony mound, 3.5m x 1.9m x .25m high, also occurs. A modern house occupies the site of the circular enclosure depicted at this location on the first edition of the OS map. Local memory recalls the former existence of a rath here. This is probably the site titled 'Gurtatuggart Fort'/ Gort an tSagairt in the OSNB, where it is described as an 'earthen fort about one chain in diameter' (Prior, 59). Fermoyle Castle: This small castle was reputedly built in the early seventeenth century by the O'Sullivans of Formoyle and Ballycarna, a sub-sept of the O'Sullivan Mores (RIA MS 24 K 43). Owen O'Sullivan was wounded in an engagement with Cromwellian forces at nearby Ballinskelligs in 1641 (Smith 1756, 104). The poorly preserved remains of this tower house consist only of its S side with attached returns of the E and W walls. The S wall stands to an average height of 3.2m, rising to a maximum of 6.4m at the SW angle. It is 14.15m long, c. 1.4m thick and features a slight base batter. Neither of the attached returns exceed 3.5m in length. The structure is built of roughly coursed slabs and rubble laid in a lime and fine gravel mortar. Most of the quoins, which were alternately face-bedded, have been removed but a surviving example at SW is of roughly dressed sandstone. The remains indicate that the internal planning of the castle at ground floor level consisted of a main chamber with a smaller mural chamber at SE. The latter was probably accessed from an entrance lobby in the now fallen E wall. It featured a vaulted roof, the S section alone of which survives, and was lit by a small lintelled loop in the E wall. No windows or other features of the main ground floor chamber survive. The floor of the first floor chamber appears to have been laid on wall-plates supported by rough corbels, one of which survives in the S wall at W. No other features survive at this or any upper level. Much of the stone from the castle is reputed to have been used to build Fermoyle House and other buildings in its immediate vicinity (local information). - KE088-039: Megalithic tomb - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE088-039----. Located on the S side of a ridge which runs E from Fermoyle mountain, this site commands an extensive outlook to S over Ballinskelligs Bay. The monument is poorly preserved and comprises a single large roof-stone, which overlies a number of collapsed side-stones. The longer axis of the roof-stone, which tilts downwards towards E, lies ENE-WSW. Irregular in plan, it measures 2.85m x 2.07m x .35m. A number of solution pits occur on its upper surface. Three partly visible slabs protrude from beneath this stone. The first, which may represent a collapsed N side-stone, is at least 1.2m long. The second, measuring 1.9m x 1.2m x .2m, may represent a collapsed S side-stone, while the third, a small block measuring .4m x .3m x .1m, located adjacent to the N side-stone, may have functioned as a pad-stone. A quantity of small stones, including some quartz, occurs beneath the roof-stone and may represent field clearance. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
