This small enclosure is located on poor and slightly marshy pastureland, c. 250m from the sea-cliffs about a half mile (.8km) S of Clogher Head. A circular area, 3.1 to 3.3m in diameter, is enclosed by a bank and external fosse with a causewayed entrance at N and a possible causeway across the fosse at S. The fosse is 1.9m wide and a maximum of .3m deep. The bank is composed of earth and small stones and is 2.9m wide and a maximum of .75m high. To W of the site are the remains of disused field fences predating those marked on the 2nd edition of the OS map. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. A small irregularly-shaped enclosure situated about 250m from the sea-cliffs, about .8km N of Dunquin. It measures 8.5m E-W x 7.3m N-S internally and is enclosed by a grass-grown bank of stones, .8 to 1m high and 3m wide. There is a 3m wide entrance gap at E. Directly outside the entrance are 2 banks, of similar dimensions to the enclosure bank, which extend N-S for c. 13m, with a gap of .3m between them opposite the enclosure entrance. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1540. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Kilgobnet/Cill Ghobnait: This site lies within 300m of the sea-cliffs less than a mile N of Dunquin Harbour. It is comprised of a sub-circular enclosure, located at the E side of a larger enclosure which may simply be a later field. The only features visible within the former are 2 large penitential cairns, but several possible house foundations are discernible at the W side of the large enclosure. About 100m to SW, on the side of an immense outcrop of rock, there is a stone cross, and Tobar Ghobnait (KE052-005----) lies c. 120m to W of this again. Rounds are still performed at each of the monuments on February 11th (St. Gobnait's feast day). The smaller enclosure measures 19.3 x 18m internally. Its enclosing bank survives to a maximum height of 1.1m and is intermittently faced with stone. Access is provided by narrow breaks in the bank at SE and WSW. Much of the S half of the enclosure is occupied by the 2 oval flat-topped cairns of stone which measure 7.6 x 6.3m x 1.65m in height and 7.5 x 5.4m x 1.7m in height. According to Curran, the larger cairn covers 'the ruins of a small building which was probably an oratory' and the smaller cairn conceals a clochaun. However, though it is possible that the cairns overlie earlier structures, much of their make-up is undoubtedly due to the accumulation of small stones deposited by pilgrims and there is now no evidence of structural remains. The larger, sub-rectangular enclosure measures c. 47 x 48m internally. It is defined by stone field walls and may be a late feature. A series of cultivation ridges occupy much of the interior but the foundations of 3 or 4 possible house sites are still traceable, their walls now reduced to low banks of earth and stone. The stone cross measures c. 0.9m in height and 0.42m in width. It is supported by a low cairn of stones which, in turn, is set on a small platform formed partly by drystone masonry and partly by rock outcrop. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 838. Kilgobnet/Cill Ghobnait : KE052-003001- lies within 300m of the sea-cliffs less than a mile N of Dunquin Harbour. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 838. Its enclosing bank survives to a maximum height of 1.1m and is intermittently faced with stone. Access is provided by narrow breaks in the bank at SE and WSW. Much of the S half of the enclosure is occupied by the 2 oval flat-topped cairns of stone which measure 7.6 x 6.3m x 1.65m in height (KE052-003002-) and 7.5 x 5.4m x 1.7m in height (KE052-003004-). According to Curran, the smaller cairn (KE052-003004-) conceals a clochaun. However, though it is possible that the cairns overlie earlier structures, much of their make-up is undoubtedly due to the accumulation of small stones deposited by pilgrims and there is now no evidence of structural remains. It lies about 200m to SW of a possible early ecclesiastical site also named for St. Gobnait (KE052-003001-). Folklore collected from Kilgobnet School recorded that ; 'There is supposed to be a holy well at Kilgobnet and there is another holy well at Shanara. The feast of St Gobnet falls on the 11th day of February which was kept as a great in the district in days gone by but is not kept as a holiday any longer. It was celebrated by a great feast called the Pattern fair. This was a famous fair and it was attended by buyers from all over the country. All sorts of enjoyment went on at this fair at this fair all the matches were settled. There were white tents all over the place and every house in the district was a Sheebeen on that day Great faction fights also went on at this fair. The Protestants from Dingle came to fight with the Catholics of this district. The result of this was often sorrow and bloodshed as great numbers were often killed. The fair was carried on in one of Mr Shea's fields in Kilgobnet there were also toll gaps at which everyone had to pay some money before they went in. This old fair was destroyed by a fair which was held on the previous day in Killorglin and although it is now held in Killorglin five miles away it is still called the Pattern Fair.
