This is one of 10 pits, all of which contained either charcoal or traces of burning, which were excavated in 2000 by Frank Coyne, under licence no. 00E0769 which was summarised as follows; 'Monitoring of the N22 Bealagrellagh to Gortatlea N22 realignment uncovered several pits, a portion of a fulacht fiadh and a ring-barrow, of which only the northern half extended into the area under construction. Ten pits were excavated, all of which contained either charcoal or traces of burning, while one pit produced several sherds of Beaker pottery and a portion of a stone axehead. No surface indication of the ring-barrow was noted before topsoil-stripping. The southern half of this site extends under the existing Tralee–Farranfore road. The exposed portion of the site measures 25m east–west, consisting of a circular ditch 1m wide and 0.35m deep. A small quantity of cremated bone was recovered from a shallow depression in the centre of the barrow, but no other artefact was present. The southernmost portion of a fulacht fiadh extended onto the area of construction and suffered accidental damage from machinery. This necessitated the excavation of the exposed portion of this burnt mound. The area under investigation measured 2m north–south by 9m. This consisted of heat-shattered red sandstones with occasional inclusions of charcoal, to a maximum depth of 1.5m. Removal of this deposit exposed the underlying naturally occurring boulder clay. No features were found cut into this clay, and it appears that the trough area is in the main body of the mound to the north, off the line of the roadway' (Coyne 2002, 146; www.excavations.ie 2000:0435). The record for this monument has been assessed in relation to its proposed inclusion in the revised statutory Record of Monuments and Places (RMP). The evidence indicates that the monument has been totally removed (both above- and below-ground archaeology). In consequence, it will not be included in the revised RMP. No surface indication of the ring-barrow was noted before topsoil-stripping. The southern half of this site extends under the existing Tralee–Farranfore road. The exposed portion of the site measures 25m east–west, consisting of a circular ditch 1m wide and 0.35m deep. A small quantity of cremated bone was recovered from a shallow depression in the centre of the barrow, but no other artefact was present. The southernmost portion of a fulacht fiadh extended onto the area of construction and suffered accidental damage from machinery. This necessitated the excavation of the exposed portion of this burnt mound. The area under investigation measured 2m north–south by 9m. This consisted of heat-shattered red sandstones with occasional inclusions of charcoal, to a maximum depth of 1.5m. Removal of this deposit exposed the underlying naturally occurring boulder clay. No features were found cut into this clay, and it appears that the trough area is in the main body of the mound to the north, off the line of the roadway' (Coyne 2002, 146; www.excavations.ie 2000:0435). The record for this monument has been assessed in relation to its proposed inclusion in the revised statutory Record of Monuments and Places (RMP). The evidence indicates that the monument has been totally removed (both above- and below-ground archaeology). In consequence, it will not be included in the revised RMP. 'Located in the south-western corner of a relatively flat marshy field the site affords reasonably good views in all directions, particularly to the north and the Stacks Mountains. The land here has been improved to some degree and this low mound may well represent the remains of what was a larger site. 'This site is situated in a reclaimed field approximately 35m west of a small unnamed stream. The site consists of a low mound measuring 18m N-S and 13.6m E-W. The mound is on average 0.47m high and consists of blackened soil a shattered stone. There is no visible trough, though the mound is sited in a shallow depression and the mound has the appearance of having been flattened out. Aerial photography showed the presence of up to three other features similar to this mound in this field, however, while small, shallow depressions are discernible, there is no above ground trace of further sites. It should also be noted that some areas of black soil (as against the generally brown soil of the field) are visible through the patchy grass cover. As such, there is a possibility that there were other, now destroyed fulachta fiadh/s in this field. This site was subsequently partially excavated in 2000 (00E245), while testing of the area of the field that would be within the line of the N22 road improvement scheme revealed a number of burnt spreads of soil and shattered stone and the remains of a fulacht fiadh. The site was noted on colour aerial photography where it clearly shows up as a dark circular enclosure. There is no trace of the site at ground level and the approximate diameter of the site is 18m.' 'The site is located in the corner of a large field on the south side of the N22. The field slopes down from the west to the east and north and is marshy in those areas at the base of the slope. The site affords good views to the east and north-east, while the low hill which is crowned by Glanbane hillfort is visible to the south – south-east. The embanked enclosure (KE039-202001-) shows up clearly on aerial photography and is situated in one of the marshy areas of the field. The site consists of a large, denuded bank, which can be traced all round the site. The bank is on average 9.5m wide, 0.57m high internally and 0.47m high externally. The site is partially scarped back into the natural slope of the ground at the north – north-west and this gives an exaggerated internal height (c. 1m ) at this point. There is no evidence for an entrance at any point. There appears to be evidence for an external ditch to the west – north-west but this is more than likely related to the possible barrow rather than the enclosure, as no definite ditch can be discerned elsewhere round the site. The interior is relatively flat at base but, due to the inward slope of the enclosing bank, the site would have a “saucer-like” profile. The interior is damp and has a heavy growth of irises. The internal dimensions of the site are 22.7m N-S and 21.5m E-W. The total dimensions of the site are 42.4m N-S and 40.9m E-W.' 'The possible barrow (KE039-202002-) abuts the enclosure [KE039-202001-] to the west – north-west and while it is built back against the natural slope of the land, there are clear traces of a low mound 17m in diameter. Due to the slope of the ground the mound is 1.25m high to the east but, on average, 0.48m high elsewhere. The probable ditch is only clearly visible on the eastern side of the mound, however, it does appear to run out under the field boundary and the existing N22. The ditch is on average 1.45m wide at base and 0.22m below level of the existing ground surface. Interestingly the ditch would also appear to be impinged on by the embanked enclosure.' Detached four-bay two-storey farmhouse, built c. 1870, probably originally three-bay, with single-bay single-storey gabled projecting bay to north-east. Detached single-bay single-storey gable-fronted outbuilding, built c. 1900, to west. Formerly on Tralee-Killarney road but bypassed by straightening of road.
