Internal diam. 21.3m N-S, 22m E-W This severely modified caher, known locally as 'Caher-abhan', is located on a low ridge just S of the Oweveen river, a tributary of the Cummeragh. The site has been adapted for use as a sheep dip and pound by cementing over its interior, constructing several walls and rebuilding most of its internal wall-face. The original enclosing element survives best at S, where it measures 2.8m wide and 1.65m high. Here it is faced externally with flat boulder-like slabs set in rough horizontal courses. Much collapse abuts the external base of the wall. A gap at NNW, 1.5m wide, may represent the location of the original entrance. A large slab, 1.45m x .8m x .3m, lies outside it, and it was suggested by O'Connell that it originally served as an entrance lintel (KAS). O'Connell also noted two 'guard-rooms' in the bank, close to the entrance, but these are no longer apparent. At NW a number of sheepfolds and an old field boundary abut the site externally, and a second field boundary extends from the site at SE. A 'cave' was discovered in the centre of the site when it was being cemented over (local information). No apparent surface trace of this possible souterrain (KE089-064001-) survives. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 587. Internal diam. 16.3m N-S, 14.7m E-W This small circular caher is located in boggy pasture directly S of the Oweveen river, which flows W from Lough Iskanamacteery. A large circular hut, modified for use as a double sheepfold, occupies its centre. The enclosing element of the site is no longer extant along its S sector, and a modern sheepfold interrupts its probable course at SE. A 1.5m wide eroded gap at WSW may represent the original entrance. The enclosing wall is elsewhere faced internally and externally with large boulder-like slabs, set in rough horizontal courses, which enclose a rubble core. The upper surface of the wall is topped with a peaty sod. It has an average external height of 1.1m, an average internal height of .75m, and is 2.5m wide. The hut (KE090-017001-) occupies almost the entire interior of the site and is internally divided by a modern wall. It has an internal diameter of 6.4m 5.9m, and its well-preserved wall of faced drystone masonry is 1.45m high and up to 2m wide. Its E facing entrance, marked by an upright slab on its S side, is 1.1m wide. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 588. Occupying a low raised area, c. 550m x 400m, at the base of the N side of an E-W ridge. An extensive stretch of low-lying boggy pasture surrounds the N side of the site and extends N to loughs Namona and Cloonaghlin. A complex of drystone-built structures and some animal shelters set within an old field system. Three huts are located W of the townland boundary. (1) (KE090-032----) Partly rebuilt, a square hut of rough construction with a sod-covered inner wall-face. D: 1.9m x 1.6m. T: 1.8m. This ruined stone enclosure is located in level, boggy pasture on the N side of a ridge which overlooks loughs Namona and Cloonaghlin. Not marked on the OS maps, the area enclosed measures 7.7m N-S x 9.2m E-W and the sod-covered enclosing wall survives only one course high. It is 1.9m wide and its external facing is formed of boulder-like slabs. Two sheepfolds interrupt the circuit of the enclosure at SW and NW. That at NW is U-shaped in outline and appears to overlie an earlier structure. The SW example appears to follow the outline of an earlier circular structure. The above description is derived from A.
