In rough hill grazing close to the edge of a high W-facing cliff with views of Valencia Island and Sceilg Mhichíl. The remains of a rectangular hut site (3.8m NE-SW; 2.1m NW-SE) defined by the vertical face of a cliff at SE and elsewhere by the horizontally-laid lower courses of a partially collapsed, drystone wall (T 0.6m; H 0.7m). Rubble is scattered in the interior. A damaged entrance at the NE end leads into the hut site, and also leads NE into to a largely collapsed annexe (1.9m NE-SW; 0.8m NW-SE), the NE end of which is covered by a slab. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011 - KE096-022: Promontory fort - coastal, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE096-022----. Possible promontory fort described in 2003 as follows; ‘A level flat triangular headland flanked by sheer cliffs on three sides measures 90m wide at the neck and 90m long. It is cut off from the mainland by a 2.5m wide 1m deep fosse, flanked by low earthen banks on either side. While these features are too unsubstantial to be the remains of a promontory fort, the existence of a small circular earthen enclosure, barely visible in the sward, lying close to the southern cliff edge in the interior point to the earlier occupation of the headland. The surrounding area is one of cleared and drained coarse pasture. The sea is not accessible from within. A large headland immediately to the south has further evidence of hut sites on the promontory’ (Casey 2003, 26, no. D). - KE096-023: Promontory fort - coastal, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CKE096-023----. Possible promontory fort described in 2003 as follows; ‘A large broad west-facing headland measuring 280m long and 180m wide at the widest point is cut off by an earthen bank and fosse. These are similar in appearance to many such boundaries that criss-cross the adjacent pastureland and bog, and may not be an indication of antiquity. The interior of the headland contains several foundations of collapsed and grassed-over hut sites, as well as traces of earlier cultivation and field divisions. The most prominent of these stands close to the tip of the promontory near an area of outcrop. Slight traces of levelled bank or wall can be seen from the air running across the headland at the point some 100m west of the visible bank. These features indicate the possibility of earlier occupation of the headland. Similar huts are visible close to the site, including the adjacent Puffin Island’ (Casey 2003, 27, no. E). Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Glanearagh. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of the townland of Glanearagh, about 1 in 5 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
