On the seccond edition of the OS map this site is depicted as a circular bivallate enclosure, the outer bank of which was shown around the N sector of the site only. The original line of the S sector of this bank, however, is reflected in the strong curvature of the modern field boundary. The site was completely levelled during the 1950s, and no visible trace remains. It was located N of Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, W of the Gaddagh river. Cooke records that both banks were of earth and stone construction (1906, 10). The outer bank varied in height from 3 feet (1.1m) to 6 feet (1.8m) above external ground level, and the intervening fosse averaged 16 feet (4.9m) wide. The inner bank was up to 10 feet (3m) wide. The internal diameter of the rath was 120 feet (36.6m) N-S.Towards the centre of the site's interior was a poorly preserved, circular stone structure, 20 feet (6.1m) in diameter. From this structure, which may have been a hut site (KE065-089001-), a low bank extended towards the site's enclosing element at E. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 675. This stone was located in a cultivated field on the lower N facing slopes of Knocknafreaghaun ridge, which extends from Macgillycuddy's Reeks. Extensive views may be had from the site to N and E. The stone was blasted in the 1950s, and fragments of it were used to line a well. Prior to this at least four feet (1.2m) had been broken off one of its ends (Hussey 1909, 103). It was an earthfast boulder of sandstone, approximately .75m high and at least 3.7m long. Its longer axis lay N-S and its decorated upper surface, which was covered in rock art motifs, sloped slightly upwards from both ends towards the centre (Cooke 1906, 9-10). These motifs consisted of at least forty-three cupmarks, twenty-one cup-and-rings, three cup-and-three rings and one cup-and-four rings. Some of the cupmarks were joined by radial grooves. The largest motif on the boulder was one foot (.3m) in diameter (O'Connell 1939b, 131). A number of other hollows may have been of natural origin (Hussey 1909, 104). See attached drawing of rock art taken from O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, Fig. 61 and photo Plate 29 The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Gaddagh River to W and excellent views of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to S. Not seen. According to local information, the rock art stone was blasted by a dynamite contractor in the 1950s and the stone used to line a well in nearby Carhoonahone townland. It is unknown the precise location of the well or if it is still in use (ibid). According O’Sullivan & Sheehan (1996, 96-97: Fig. 61; Plate 29), ‘This stone was located in a cultivated field on the lower N-facing slopes of Knocknafreaghaun ridge, which extends from Macgillycuddy's Reeks. This site was located on the lower N facing slopes of Knocknafreaghaun, on boggy, rock-strewn land. Known locally as Cill an Chabhlaigh, Hussey described, it as being of rectangular plan, carefully built with large stones (1909, 105). O'Connell noted that it was cleared away in the 1930s (1939b, 129). The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
